As California's Largest Lake (Salton Sea) approaches an environmental point of no return, I attempted to be the first person to walk around its hazardous Salton Sea shoreline in the soaring summer temperatures in order to prevent an ecologic disaster that could impact the entire western hemisphere.
Learn how my adventure at Salton Sea and this call to action can bring attention to the looming ecological disaster in California.
Filmed in 2014 - 2015 and originally released in 2017

Terrific production. Much respect for someone who is passionate about something and then actually do something about it. I'm a former San Jose, CA (northern CA) resident and learned one thing about CA government. They screw everything up. You want to screw a project up, let the government run it. You took into your own hands and let the people know. Good on you. Best to you.

I’m not sure what inspired you to take on such a major adventure, other than growing up around the area, but I’m glad you did, and happy you shared it with the world! Well done Sir! JUST … WOW! 😢

My Life has Always Been Connected To The Salton Sea just as many as yours. I grew up here thru the Rich Agricultural Area near Mecca & Oasis, my family migrated here in the Golden 50s, 60s, bought land & even property. My Grandfather did farming business & supported Cesar Chavez who fought for Immigrant Worker's Rights. Deet & Many Chemicals were a health hazard affecting many families not just the Sea & Wildlife. I have Relatives still fighting for The Restoration for the Sea but also for Children being Affected. I'm looking forward to the future not just with drawing Worldwide influence for Lithium Resources but Date Agriculture Which plays a Huge Part Too. Your video was an inspiration heartwarming journey and love to thank you. I hope it can motivate more people out there. 🤗

Moved to SoCal in 2014 and I'm sorry to say I have not yet been to the SS; now 7 years later, there much less of it. Planning to road trip solo with my camper this weekend to pay homage. I'm on board to join the Save Our Sea movement and add a voice. Created by accident and then we exploited it for pleasures; we have a responsibility to restore, protect and preserve this piece of man-made environmental wonder. To ignore this responsibility should leave a legacy of embarrassment to those who have the most power to initiate the big push to restore the Salton Sea ensuring all life (human and nature) it touches thrives.

It's always humbling, and sometimes embarrassing to realize one's own ignorance. I find myself both today as I watched this beautifully written and produced documentary. As a life long resident of southern California, I had no idea that the Salton Sea was in such a dire condition. A huge thanks to all involved in the making of this documentary. P.S. It's good to know that you're more than just a entertaining, radio "expert", RU-vidr. Great job Randy!

Like happyjack, I came for the radio and stayed for not only the content but the delivery. Then I put the time aside to watch THIS. I had visited Bombay Beach 25 years ago during a trip to the Imperial Valley. It was an eerie thing even then. Randy, I have more respect for you than I have for most people after seeing this presentation of your walk. I had little idea of the magnitude of the issue. The interviews of the regional water managers, mayors, principles, hydrologists, professors, the film makers and citizens are both moving and motivating. I wish to look into the state of affairs of any Sea of Cortez water "straw" project as of January 2023... and I still want to watch the remaining 25% of this fantastic presentation. Thank you again for your unselfish contribution and for literally risking your life during this walk to bring about a greater awareness of the state of the Salton Sea.

I was born in Brawley, CA. Before that, my dustbowl family had settled in Imperial. I visited the Salton Bay Yaht Club ruins in the early 90's. I climbed the spiral staircase, explored the motel, saw and smelled all the dead fish. It all felt like a part of me. I have been told that at one time there were thermal mud pools and natural oasis around the area before it began to rise.

I ran across your GMRS you tube videos and you mentioned your involvement in the Salton Sea restoration and public awareness of its plight. I am retired from fish and wildlife lands restoration management and until I watched the SOS documentary, I was not aware of the degree and rate of depletion of the Salton Sea habit areas that are affecting migratory waterfowl, fish and human species survival. I live in Washington and in Palm Desert and until today the only bad thing I have heard about is the smell in the desert from the Salton Sea, not the reasons why. You are to be commended at a higher level for your success in bring awareness of the Salton Seas plight to the citizens of California and beyond. Dont be afraid to plug this movie more often on your videos.

Thank you for doing this. Over 40 years ago now, when I was a kid in Jr. High, we went southern route to get to California from Kansas in the middle of winter. I remember my dad taking us on a side trip when we went to Calexico and Mexicali. We spent the night in El Centro, and then we went north and drove to the Salton Sea, before going back down to I-8 and San Diego. I mostly remember seeing all the agriculture (growing up around it) and amazed at the fruits and veggies year round. I truly hope they can figure out a way to pull water northwards and over the hump and back down into the Salton Sea.

My wife were out at Anza Borrego in 2022 and did a trek out to Salton Sea just out of curiosity not knowing anything about the lake. Once we got there it was clear something significant had gone on here. We did some research and could not believe we’d never heard of this. A week later at Joshua Tree we were at an overlook where we had a good view of the Salton Sea. We were talking to a park ranger at the overlook who told us there are two ideas being looked at to address the continuing lowering water level: 1. Bring in water from Mexico and 2. cap the whole lake with cement. Neither of these ‘solutions’ is practical, but no other option, from his knowledge, was even being looked at. I’ve seen a lot of the NotaRubicon videos and they are informative and very entertaining. This video is a whole different animal. I’m truly appreciative. This is to say, when you see me pop up as a new member, although I appreciate your entertaining videos, it’s this video that got me to become a member.

As many others, came for your radio information and found this. I no longer live in SoCal but have traveled past the Sea for many years, first as a boy, when my folks had a lot there, then as an adult on the way elsewhere. Randy, you are clearly a man who isn't afraid to get involved in the things he is passionate about...traits that are admirable. I live in the mountains now, where hydropower and small generating stations are critical pieces of the infrastructure. When I heard the statement that there is a 234 ft difference in elevation of the Salton Sea and the Sea of Cortez I wondered if hydro power could be part of the equation. Build the DeSal plant in Mexico near the coast, supply the locals and farmers with it and send the rest of the fresh water north, though a hydro generation station to take advantage of that water head. Then send the power back to the DeSal plant and the communities in the area...and the fresh water into Salton Sea. Seems like that fresh water that would help Salton Sea would almost pay for itself once a system was in place... It seems too easy, I am sure it isn't, but I have seen small Hydro generation plants in my area that work with far less than 230 ft of fall...just an idea. We are going to pay for the fix, and can do it now, or later, and add lives to the cash that will be required to solve a much bigger problem.

I made sure I built one day without any obligations to do a day trip to Joshua Tree National Forest then the Salton Sea with a return route through the Anza-Borrego State Park. I was blown away by the beauty and diversity of the landscapes. The Salton Sea, even at its diminished capacity, astonished me with its size and color. I have mixed feelings about attempts to “save” it since it was create, this time, by an engineering mistake. But if it can be sustainably maintained in a way that provides economic security for the region, I am for it.
