Wondering who chose the order of the branches. Usually they are played according to their date of inception. In which case the Air Force with the Space Force last would be more appropriate.

You are correct about order being date of inception. In the case of the Coast Guard they are not part of the Department of Defense, they fall under the Department of Homeland Security. During "Time of War" the Coast Guard comes between the Navy and the Air Force. The origin of the Navy dates back to Oct 13, 1775 and the Marine Corps was created on Nov 10, 1775. The reason the Marine Corps is secon on the list is because there is a Naval Order that states, "The Marine Corps shall be placed first on foot, and to the right on line." That gives the Marine Corps the position of seniority over the Navy, even though the Marine Corps is under the Department of the Navy. Good catch, but this is the correct order.
