Sammy Brown is a South African artist from Eldorado Park in Cape Town, who started off his career with “The Gaylords” in 1963, before moving on to the “Golden City Dixies” and then to “The Invaders” in the late 1960s. He toured France with “The Invaders” before deciding to go solo. In 1971 he was discovered by CBS talent scout, Oscar Renzi (later a DJ on Capital Radio), and released a number of 7” singles, before moving to London in 1973. He returned to South Africa in 1974 and joined the jazz-rock group “Oswietie”. In 1975 he starred in the Maseru production of the musical “Hair”, and following this as narrator in “Pippin”.
In 1976 he toured Brazil and America, working with the likes of MFSB (Mothers, Fathers, Sisters & Brothers) and Bunny Sigler, and also sang with the Philadelphia group “People’s Choice”. He again returned to South Africa (in 1976) and starred in Des & Dawn Lindberg’s production of “The Black Mikado”. In 1977 he joined CCP Records, but in 1978 formed his own production company, Brown Sugar Productions.
