We created this lyric video for ‘Winter Song’ in collaboration with People Of The Streets - an international social enterprise that puts human stories at the heart of the public conversation on homelessness.
People Of The Streets provide contextually grounded educational courses, in both visual and narrative arts, which meet the less tangible needs of disadvantaged groups.
Selections of work are exhibited in physical and virtual spaces to amplify the voices of the participants in the public domain. By personifying statistics and revealing narratives and identities, the work is used as a bridge to better engage the public in the issues at hand - challenging stereotypes and stigmas.
Profits from the exhibition of images are fed back to the original creator, via a self-development fund in partnership with social workers.
Through the co-creation of art and the connection of people, institutions and ideas, POTS aim to catalyse positive change.

Amazing. Elvis Costello called this the greatest song ever written and you have done a stunning version. It's 25 years since Alan Hull died and I'd like to think he's shining down on you for this. It's still a highlight of Lindisfarne shows and I hope it will become a highlight of yours too. Going on the Christmas playlist along with Cardboard Christmas Boxes from Statues & Liberties Alan's final album.

This song is incredible. Christmas is a time when we listen to carols, unwrap presents, and drink hot cider. We're bombarded with red, green, and golden lights. It's a time where everyone seems to gather in unison and enjoy the festivities. For me, Christmas is a time when our church gathers to eat a potluck lunch as Christmas jazz music plays in the background. But is it a privilege to associate Christmas to such thoughts? Have I really spared "a thought for the homeless tramp" or "for the traveller with no secure position"? What does Christmas mean for them? Do they think about the same merriment or are they preoccupied by worries of where to sleep the next night? I can only imagine. "When winter comes howling in," we gather with friends and family to keep ourselves warm. But what about those who don't have anyone? I dunno. This song really makes me think whether there's some meaningful change I can bring to those who can't. Maybe I'm being naive. Maybe I'm not. But it really makes me think. Sam's vocals are amazing too!

Brilliant comment. Also check out Alan's great song Cardboard Christmas Boxes - it contains the lyric 'For those that think that Christmas is goodwill to all men, take a walk down London streets, look and think again' and 'For those that live in cardboard Christmas boxes how the London bells will chime'. These songs for me spell out the true meaning of Christmas as a spiritual person, those of care and love and compassion. 2020's a strange year with Covid yet I'm not missing the ultra commercialised Christmas, the forced merriment, the must-have gifts, the £6 a glass of mulled wine at festive markets, the once a year drinkers causing mayhem. The fact Sam is raising awareness of homelessness through this song means we are initiating change and helping people and making a difference.

If you want to make meaningful change, take action and start by helping just one person. Buy a hot meal for one homeless person and show them some kindness that they may not have had for a while. Making someone's day is meaningful change :) Great song and vocals I agree!

I saw Alan Hull sing this live so many times and it was always one of those spine tingling moments of every show. I think he'd be delighted with this version which adds new life to an old song. SF should be proud of this cover version.
