In the XCO World Cup pits you’ll find a lot of very high performance mountain bikes, but Sam Gaze’s steeds always seem to stand out from the crowd. His bike setups and resulting position is rather specialist to say the least.

I love the absence of all the long low slack B.S. This is geometry that works for 90% of the trails out there.

First bike porno I watched in two months or so. Click-bited by the the look and geometry that are similar to my HT, including different F and R tires (with way lower position at components scale of course). So excited to see I don't need an upgrade for fullsuss :). If it's good for Gaze, I'll just have to upgrade myself. BTW, the "ovalized" chainring keeps the chain further from the chain stay during (bumpy) descent, hence less chain banging against the stay. That's personally to me is the main advantage. If it helps smoothen power distribution, I don't mind :)

#askgmbn All the pro bike checks, particularly XC bikes, focus on how lightweight the bike and its components are. Is there a UCI minimum weight for mountain bikes like there is for road bikes or is it the same minimum weight of 6.8kg?
@neilmacpherson260
@neilmacpherson260 6 лет назад
no limits phew, tech can be as good/ light/ strong as the designers can manage. yay
@kyledommaschk451
@kyledommaschk451 6 лет назад
Andrew Kirk since xc racing is more technical than road racing the designers are more concerned about going fast rather than just weight

All very nice but how does it manual, bunny hop logs and play in rock gardens off large drops? I have enough problem with a 70mm stem on my xc hardtail but at least I can get the saddle out the way with my dropper.

Noo, say it isn't so. I ride an Radon Race 8.0 2014 Alu XC race bike 20"at 6'2" Thrown on 2.35 Schwalbs Nics - tubless, New grips which I have set at 740mm on 700mm bars, Stem is standard 70mm and I added a 105mm dropper post. I now take it down drops and through some tough technical trails. My only remaining issues are 80mm forks which I set at 10-15% sag to minimise bottom out when punished and the DT Swiss X1900 wheels which are a bit narrow at 20mm internal. I was having issues manualling but now I am keeping my head up, I am finding it much easier. That S-works does have a long stem on it though. XC hard tails can be punished though. ))

well, I'm a roadie and in the XC/MTB just a newbie. So... could anyone explain the difference from this Magura disk brake and the SRAM level ultimate this bike originally comes with? Weight? Rider´s personal preferences? Any other difference? Thanks a lot.

Thank you for the video. That’s art! Mines the almost-identical non-S Works Stumpjumper and I love it every day on the back trails of The Otter. May I ask which size tires he ran front to rear? I’m at 29X2.1 - 29X2.3.

I’m searching for a 17”-20”, 1995-2001 Stumpjumper M2 or an S-works frame if anyone has one or a lead on one please let me know. My rockhopper frame just started to get hairline cracks so unfortunately need to replace it, figured I’d see if I can get lucky and find a stumpy or Sworks. Even if you’re reading this in a few years from now, I’ll always be interested. Just drop a reply comment and I’ll see it in my notifications and get back to you. Thanks! Love the retro MTB community- you all are great!

Whats the bump guard do? Still dont get it....
@canubra
@canubra 6 лет назад
Ben Ge It stops the fork crown hitting the frame if you crash which could damage the carbon. Instead it will hit the bump guard and the bump guard will absorb the impact.

Is 130 mm stem good for steering of mtb bike)
@gmbntech
@gmbntech 4 года назад
130's pretty long! Something shorter would give you more stability in feeling
@keirfarnum6811
@keirfarnum6811 3 года назад
My XC bike from the 90s had a 135mm stem; and I’m only 5’6”. It changes the steering a little and creates a larger arc for turning the bars; but it didn’t really matter that much as no one really steered by the bars at speed. It’s slightly noticeable at slow speed though. If it’s too long though, it can feel a bit like it’s out front of the wheel and can be a little bit “divey” if you’re steering from the bars (if that makes sense). With today’s wider bars, it could potentially make it feel like you’re having to make huge sweeping arm movements when steering from the bars at low speed though; so the wider bars work better with shorter stems. I hope that helps.
