The Samaya Assaut2 8K Single Skin Tent. This is my second impression of this tent and I discuss the vestibule add on, condensation and a quick compare against one of my favourites the Hilleberg Akto... I hope that you enjoy the video.

Thanks for bringing us 'porchgate' so quickly Tom. I hope you had a good night, looked like an excellent spot. Those wispy bits of cloud blowing through were spectacular 😮 . Would it be possible to leave the porch attached for ease of pitching? It does look really pleasantly roomy, though your shot did reveal the big gaps at the bottom of the poles, potential spindrift funnel? The colour is growing on me too. 😊

Hey Dave great to hear your thoughts... While it looked like the vestibule was a little hard to attach it really wasn't.. This is what happens when you video out on a camp with some wind.. I just need some more practice.. Securing the vestibule to the poles will always take a few moments and this cant be done until the poles are secured in the eyelets.. There is also more pegging points at the bottom to make a better seal and that will be part of my next video.... Best wishes Tom

Good video as always, Tom. That Vestibule in the Samaya Assaut is truly massive. Looks like it about doubles the size of the tent. Look forward to see the performance of the Assaut in a high wind situation. Like those green and black hiking boots. Did you do a review of them?

Hi thank you for the comments and watching the video.. Despite a few negative comments regarding the vestibule attachment I am personally more than happy to manage this for the advantage of being able to strip the tent down to 1.5kg when conditions suit.. High winds shouldn't be too long away but as to the boot review I am not so sure but maybe I will talk about them as an add on in another video.. Thank you for the idea.... best wishes Tom

Yes Hans great to hear from you and thank you for commenting on so many of my videos... I found the vestibule really large and sheltered from the wind.. It allows really great space for cooking and gear storage at the same time if needed. looking forward to your next video too.. Best wishes Tom

So far so good. Space is a good thing. Heavy weather at some point, A little practice of putting it on will come in time. The attachment test and also the opening around the vestibule may be a concern. Great to have space at a light weight. Safe travels.

Looked like the two things going for the Akto could be speed of pitching and that it’d fit into a small spot. Other than that the roominess of a two person tent is always nice. (My eco guilt might however prevent me from buying a DCF tent since they wear quickly according to Tarptent.)

Hi Peter, thank you for watching.. Yes the Akto is super fast to pitch I will vouch for that. Samaya is quick too but the vestibule does addd a little extra time.. I protect the DCF floor with a footprint so that's most of it covered as its only other small areas that have DCF fabric.. There is also the thickness of the fabric as all DCF is not the same and here the DCF Floor is pretty thick.. I will still use the footprint just in case though... best wishes Tom

Re the slippery floor, just use a small section (ie I’m length) 3mm foam mat eg the Atom Packs “Thinny” under your pad. You can also use it to sit on etc when out and about.

Hi thank you for sharing your thoughts.. I totally agree and I actually usually use a super light closed cell foam pad from Gram Counter Gear... which weighs only 74g.. Atom make great packs too... best wishes Tom

Hey Tom. It's pretty amazing if they really have eliminated the majority of the condensation issues. The vestibule looks good also, so much room and oh my...more pockets? Like you mentioned, I don't know why manufactures don't add a decent amount of pockets. I makes for a much tidier tent. The only slight negative I can see is attaching the vestibule. It looks a bit fiddly, which would be fine in warmer months, but not sure how the numb fingers will enjoy it in the colder ones. It's nice that it's modular though, so at least you have the option.

Hey Mark, I am going to have to re demonstrate the vestibule set up as every comment is mentioning it... To be honest it wasn't a big deal and we always come up with challenges when filming true real world setup especially when you are not doing a back garden review... I have spent 20 mins I am sure on velcro attachments of my North Face tents and this only took a couple. From all the experience I have I would actually prefer having the vestibule as a modular option like this and if I have to take my gloves off for 1 minute to do it then it's no big deal and I camp in harsher conditions than most. I always take my gloves off anyway as gloves just make everything take so long... Best wishes Tom

@@TOMHEANEY100 Hey Tom. Yeah totally understand what you're saying with the challenges of filming with a real world set up. I don't think it was so much that you were fumbling or making it look hard, I guess it's more of a curiosity to see how you get on with it in the cold, rain and snow. Probably a non issue. I guess everything else looked so simple, that part stood out as being a bit more fiddly. 🤷 Would love to see a vestibule set up video though. 👍

Hi Tom. Great footage conditions looked lovely. Very picturesque. Initial impressions are I personally would prefer this tent over the akto space wise. I’m not a fan of claustrophobic tents with low roof height but that’s just a personal thing. The vestibule for me would be love / hate. I’d love it when it’s up, but I know I would hate the task of putting it up in strong wind and / or freezing cold. All in all a great tent tho. I sense the akto is on borrowed time…..

Hey Gary great to hear from you and your thoughts 💭💭,. I think I love the vestibule.. Once it's on it fits really well. Putting it on will be down wind with the wind not working against you so it should be ok.. Space, comfort and actual stability were really good.. So the last two camps have worked really well... That's pretty sweet tent. I like the design, wieght and vestibule combo. It will be interesting to see how it performs in a wet environment. Breathable materials I am experienced with don't breathe very well wet.

Hi Adam, this night was quite damp and at one point the outside of the tent was soaking wet as it was very misty... and the tent still did great. But as I said in the video there will always be certain conditions that may not work for most tents and I am not looking for a tent that will cover every eventuality. If its going to rain all night then I will take my Hilleberg Jannu... hey best wishes Tom

Thanks for this Tom. I wouldn’t ‘superfocus’ on condensation - spindrift would be more of a winter issue. It’s a lovely modular concept, but the fiddling around is a bit of distraction. Keep your Akto ⛺️ 😅

Is hearing "It's not high wind" from an experienced camper in the UK like hearing "It's not cold" from a winter-camping Canadian? The condensation control in the main body of the tent seems amazing. I'll be watching more of your videos to see if you've tested it in pouring rain and/or when it can't be as well-vented. I wonder if Samaya will make an optional smaller, lighter vestibule at some point. I'm settled with my winter and 3-season tents for now but enjoy keeping up with the advances, so thanks for your videos! Stunning scenery.

Ha ha I get it... To be honest I may not make many more videos on this tent as the interest on RU-vid drops on each consecutive video.. I do pick the weather conditions that I choose to use this tent and all tents can fail if you deliberately go seeking those conditions. just like the Hilleberg Soulo will leak under the vent cover in driving rain and wind.. I tested the Samaya 2.0 in heavy rain with no wind for 4 hours and it did amazing.. I totally agree that a lighter vestibule would be great for this tent but Samaya may even be discontinuing this entire tent for this season... I agree that deliberately seeking those conditions isn't the best way to keep equipment from being damaged. I find heavy snow, or a good high altitude hailstorm in summer, enlivening and appealing, but I don't chase weather on purpose. Thanks again. I'm getting a lot out of your videos and appreciate your honest delivery of information, obviously based on experience. Very fun to watch and listen.

Hi Tom. Excellent overview, everything is clear with ventilation now. I’m thinking of buying a Samaya tent for climbing 7 and 8 thousand meters, but I’m not sure yet. I have not yet read or seen a single review where a Dyneema tent could withstand strong winds, at least about 100 km per hour. As far as I understand, you haven’t had such experience yet, I’ll be looking forward to reviews in windy weather. What do you think about its suitability in such conditions?

Hi thank you for watching and taking the time to comment... I have had this out in 40mph and the tent was under no pressure at all. My friend Gary who bought one after experiencing mine has had his out in measured 50mph.. instagram. instagram.com/garynesbitt76/. Again it was super impressive regarding its stability.. I wont be doing any other reviews I am afraid on this tent as 3 reviews is already much more that most you tubers do on any tent... After using it now probably on around 10 occasions I can definitely recommend it and I think my friend buying one is a great testament... best wishes and I really appreciate your comments...

Another great video. I liked how you demonstrated the vestibule set up, I have been waiting since last year to see how that's done. To me, this vestibule pitching wont work in freezing conditions wintertime, its just to complicated with the welcro where the gloves have to come off, but Samaya is on to something with the option. A question number two is how is the insect protection/mesh? For Solo camping, the Hilleberg Unna in winter time, and Barents Outdoor Snota 1 ultralight in summer time covers all my every season needs, but nice to see someone offering Scandinavia competition. Where can I buy you that coffee? Well deserved.

Hey that you for the comments... I understand that viewers want to see the vestibule set up so that's why I filmed it. While I had a few issues with the velcro ( more down to my lack of practice) in all honesty I dont see it as a problem and love the fact that I can chose to take the vestibule or not... I take my gloves of for many tent set ups as personally for me I am so much faster and it never really gets that cold here in the UK... No mesh here I am afraid but again for me its not an issue as I always camp in windy locations and the bugs dont like the wind... Great to hear that you use an Unna as they are a great tent. Another question: have you ever tried Samaya 2.5? Does it bother you that with Samaya curtains in general you tend to touch or at least touch the walls of the curtain with head and feet? In the comments on the web you hear a lot about this. Thank you in advance and really all my compliments for the excellent content of the videos. I look at them several times and it is always pleasant.

Hey thank you for your feedback and very positive comment.. These tents are designed as minimalist shelters to be very strong and lightweight.. Once you make them bigger then they become weaker unless you add more poles.. I am 6 ft one inch or 185 cm and I manage no worries.. If my sleeping bag touches the end then so be it it's only very gentle.. All tents have pros and cons and it's about personal preference.. You can't have it all.. Once again I hope that helps.. Another good video. Looks like a very nice tent, and the vestibule looks like you can store a ton of gear. I know this is a tent for high altitude, but I’m wondering if there’s bug mesh in the vents? I’m looking very much forward to see how the tent handles a downpour. ATB from Norway 🇳🇴

Hey thank you for the comment... No bug mesh I am afraid but for me no issue as I only camp if its windy in the summer and the bugs cant cope with anything above 15mph... The last Samaya I tested handled the rain no worries at all so I would think this one will do fine too.... best wishes Tom

Good morning, why do you prefer the Assaut 2 8k model, with a small door, compared to the Samaya 2.0 with a very wide side door and therefore more agility in entering and exiting?

It's all about potential wind performance.. The 2.0 has the vestibule on the side which exposes the wide rear or wide side so cannot be orientated in to the wind in any way to offer a low wind shedding profile.. I will pick the Assaut 2 time and time again.. I hope that helps.. Best wishes Tom

Too fiddly and finnecky for my liking (i am physically challenged, so it makes a huge difference for me) Not much lighter than the Hille Nammatj 2, which is also impressively easy to pitch whatever the weather. I would love to see them side by side in some proper weather over a multi day camp, not just an overnighter. Interesting how tents are so subjective. Your videos helped me pick the Nammatj 2, which for me, despite the weight is my perfect tent. The Akto and tents like it are too cramped/compromised. The Samaya looks like a good piece of kit for those who need that kind of thing!

Hi thank you for your comments.. The Samaya can run at half the weight of the Nammatj 2 in summer, or if you know you will not need the vestibule... For me that's versatility which is an advantage. I am afraid I only do single overnighter camps so sorry about that regarding the testing... I do test a lot more than most though... The Nammatj 2 I must admit is a great shelter and is a true two person tent with great durability.... best wishes with yours.. Tom

Hi tom at the end of the day if the tent works for you then thats all that matters.its not a tent for me the vestibule seems a faff especially in cold weather but the space is great.

Hey Craig, absolutely that's exactly what matters and so far its working for me extremely well and suiting the type of camping that I do.. The modular vestibule attachment has definitely got a few negative comments so far but personally as weight really matters to me then I will take any drawbacks re attaching it to save the 600g when I dont need it. I probably camp in harsher conditions than most and with a little more practice I am more than happy regarding its set up... Hey once again thank you for the great comment... best wishes Tom

Since I've had my dcf mld duomid the atko has never been used ... just as stable and bags more room. I guess when its chucking down, which is when you need some sort of porch space to cook in etc, you dont really want to be fiddling about in the rain and wind ... the atko is brill in that regard as it can be pitched in a couple of minutes. If the stuff is breathable fabric I wonder, just like goretex the pores will clog up with ice in winter ... you only ever do that once 😂

Hey Paddy, that you for sharing your thoughts.. When I used the Jannu in heavy snow the flysheet was pressed against the inner fabric over large sections of the tent... This meant that there was no breathability at all and there was a fair amount of dampness transferred.. So for me I will definitely give this tent a chance as it cant be any worse and is lighter... great to hear your thoughts best wishes Tom

Have you tried the Enan? Would you consider using an enan with a 10 mm pole (or double 9mm poles) as a lighter alernative to the Akto?

No not tried it.... the thin fabrics and mesh door are not for me. The 10mm pole set up I feel personally takes the fabric strength and pole strength ratio out of proportion.. Hilleberg match pole and diameter and fabric strength for a reason and while I use a 10mm pole on my Akto I wouldn't do it on a yellow label tent... Just my thoughts as I am aware that some do... best wishes Tom

Great video Tom. The tent certainly seems to be very stable compared to the Akto. Beautiful views and lighting when it broke through, I'm guessing it's from Slievenaglogh towards Corragh?

hey thank you... yes I found the Samaya very stable although to be fair at the beginning the Akto could have had the tension cranked up a bit.. The views were great on Sunday night after it cleared but that took some time.... Views mainly towards Bearnagh.. Great to hear from you... best wishes Tom

I reread my first comment and it could have sounded like I was dissing the Akto when I certainly wasn't, we know they are a very capable tent but the Samaya just seems so much more so. Perhaps the Jannu might give it a better challenge?

Well practice will make it a bit easier... Personally I am happy with it and I pitch tents a fair bit in challenging conditions.. I demonstrate the real world challenges so you can decide if it's for you or not.. I appreciate and respect your thoughts 🤔.. best wishes Tom

Came here to post the exact same words... porch looks like a 'faff' it would 'do my head in' get a Nallo GT for 'porching' but the advantage of this tent is you have the option to leave it at home as discussed. Lastly the other thing is how durable is it? Its a thing that only time will tell, my Nallo is about 20 years old and still a dream to use. The other huge advantage of this tent is the lack of condensation if further testing prevails - as always a great watch!
