I took my Hilleberg Soulo into the mountains to give it a wind and rain test and the weather gods obliged - with 60km/h winds and hours of heavy rain. The tent didn’t budge and I had an unexpected sunset complete with a double rainbow 😍🌈 and woke in the morning to find the mountains opposite all snow covered and beautiful
🥶 -6°C Stealth camp coming next!

Hi Clare, i have followed you for ages but i think this is my first conversation comment. Currently i am lying in bed (5am) at home in The lake district, bored but going shopping later in Keswick. I was up Castle Rigg stone circle at winter solstice meeting up with like minded people but not camping. I am beginning to feel i absolutely must camp soon this 2024 or go stir crazy!! Until then i will scroll through your videos to cheer me up!!! Thanks for being just your lovely cheerful, inspiring self. 🎉 michael. ❤ @@WildBeare

Thanks again for a wonderful video, I don't know how you get it done even under these conditions, it is truly amazing! We need a new 3-person tent and after seeing your video(s) we are going for the 3-person Hilleberg, a lot of money, sure. Expensive, not at all as you get what you pay for. The last trip we were on (Mt. Rinjani as we live in Indonesia) a couple of months ago 90% of the tents on the crater rim were destroyed by the gale force wind combined with horizontal rain and that all happened during the night!

Another bit of camping / filming perfection. When it’s especially cold I take my Decathalon headlamp (in preference to my Fenix 65R) supplemented with an UCO enclosed 9hour candle lamp which raises the temp inside the tent by a few degrees. I hike camp with a short haired large rescue dog so I have to use a two man tent (plus I’m also pretty large (6’5”/18stone). My winter tent is a Crux whilst my three season is a Triplex.

As a former Forest Service wilderness ranger in the US, I am enthralled by your adventures. This particular tent means little, compared to your willingness to go out in such conditions------and have a GREAT time! I love how you continually stretch yourself, and are willing to try different things. It's clear that you are learning very quickly, and how to back yourself up in case of problems.

First, great video and honest comments regarding the tent. Second, I have a female friend who has been told by her "macho," co-workers that she needs a man to handle camping. I told her to check out your videos and you have empowered her to go out there and do it. She feels more independent, confident, and when she shows her friends at work her iPhone videos they are all so proud of her and the "boys" shut up! Respect from your many friends in Florida USA 🌴

A tip for your foot powder. If you get ziploc or dry bag big enough to fit your foot in and put your foot powder in the bottom of it before you leave home. When out and about simply put your foot in the bag, less mess and less powder wasted. Great channel! Thank you. Oh nearly forgot, nice tent....

Hi Claire. It’s a bomb shelter of a tent. In wet n windy conditions just in lip the inner and push it back to make the vestibule bigger for cooking indoors. Another tip is for the hilleberg wind-chimes “ noisey zips 😂” put some electrical shrink wrap on them and use a hairdryer to cover the zips. I did that to my old Akto and it was great. Still to do it to my soulo tho. Condensation is better if you don’t keep stuff in the vestibule. It blocks the air flow

I’ve struggled with Hilleberg tents, I can’t justify using such an expensive tent. I just bought two OEX tents to go with all the Vango tents I have and even Vango have coped with everything I could throw at them already. The F10 Nitro 200 has survived extreme winds in Glenbrittle many years ago and I’ve used my tents here in -20.c and everything has done it’s job. I can’t think of a scenario that I need a Hilleberg (or the expensive of one!) maybe up mountains? Anyway I couldn’t afford one so I will never know 😊
@HerrFinsternis
@HerrFinsternis Год назад
I guess it's also a question of how long any one tent can endure these extreme conditions. At some point every tent (or parts of it) will give out and meet their maker. Hillbergs do stand out in this regard, they are build to stay with you for a long time.

I bought a Soulo in December, 2wks after double knee replacement surgery, as a sort of light at the end of the tunnel. I finally got to use it 2mos ago here in the mountains of northern Colorado. I've only used it twice so far but I love it. I'm 6ft 4in tall and while it's a little tight it's still comfortable and I fit just fine. When conditions look like they'll be too much for my SlingFin, I'll be happy to have my Soulo.

Interesting to see how the Soulo performs in wet windy weather . I got one just for snow camping in Norway/Sweden because like you I wanted something I could have confidence in, maybe lighter options would work too but coming from UK no oportunity to test out gear in deep cold. I pull it in the smallest Fjellpulken 'weekender' which slides (almost) into one half of the porch. A free standing tent is for me pretty much essential in powder snow as I use snow shoes so no skiis to anchor the tent. The fly coming down low helps keep out spin drift but even so when it's windy I had to pile snow around the windward side to keep the fine powder from snowing inside . Not as much cooking space as the Akto/Enan though so I think in UK conditions I prefer the Akto.

Why are people watching someone going camping, showing off equipment not many can afford and most of the time dont need and then sell merchandise (a mug for £14, im no Mug) and get affiliated sales from showing such equipment all shot and edited for such purposes? Flash a bit of skin an the thumbnails to get suckers to click and then try to portray you are in the wild surviving. Give me a break, camping in Snowdonia is not the wilds, especially when you have all the gear including drones and film equipment. dont make me laugh.

You certainly have a big pair of Rocky Mountain Oysters Claire. I'll give you that. The tent isn't the cheapest but from what I can see, if you buy it, you won't need to buy another. One question. I hike a lot, channel plug, go on, subscribe, set notifications to none, but support the little guy.🙄 (remember when you started out? 😪🙄)The question is, if I'm just thinking about going out at night, then what single person tent would you recommend? Like I say, hike regularly, but do not stay out at all, so I'm after picking your brain from your extensive experience and knowledge. Preferably treking pole assisted. But not necessarily. You are certainly tenacious and an inspiration to us all. PS, the lighter the weight the better, riddled with arthritis and knee replacement but tenacious. You get my drift. Appreciate any advice, Claire. Thanks again for all you do to promote the outdoors to the up and coming generation. I have signed the petition. But this wasn't pushed in the vlog. I think it would be great if you did so, but...... does bringing attention to it, bring unwanted attention to it? I fully support the right to wild camp as long as people leave no trace. The thought of buying a tent and having to sleep in a field with a load of idiots blasting their music when you want yo be at one with nature doesn't fill me with enthusiasm. Random thought. Am I better off buying a bivi tent for starters? Sorry for the diatribe, but I do value your opinion. Thank you Claire.

A couple of good mods I did on mine: Electric tape to the zips to stop the jingling zips in the wind. Add some linelocs and short line to the tent peg out points. Makes it so much easier on the rough gorund, to get the pegs in and the tent tent. Also 10mm poles are great addition. The other great thing about the soulo is you can guy it out as you pitch, Poles in then guy the lower lines. Then as you work round and clipping and get to the next guylines, get them pegged out. Then finish up connecting the top clips and hood. Then tidy the guylines. In really windy conditions its a godsend as well as doing it in reverse when packing away. Love your content!

I love this, it reminds me of a time when me and my Dad went wild camping at Angle Tarn in the Lakes, and we had a cheap double hoop tent. In high winds the tent kept collapsing and the tent was like 12 inches from our faces as we slept ... After each huge gust, it snapped back upright. So how we got any sleep i don't know. That was 1988, and a lifetime ago. But your video brought it back for me. Thank you. If only we'd had a Suolo then. But I doubt we'd have afforded it even then. Keep up these fabulous videos 📹 👏 ♥️

Well done you! Another excellent video, how you film in that weather beats the band. Hillberg is one of the top tents in the world, weight for performance it is hard to find a better option if you can afford one.

Well done, I love being outdoors and don't even get 10 hours in my bed, and that 🌈 moment would have made the trip for me.......but.....I don't get trying to sleep in a plastic bag in the pouring rain and howling wind. I'll keep watching and maybe I'll understand in time. Stay cool 😎

The Hilleberg fortress of Solitude 😊 just an excellent tent (especially as an answer to the British condition) when you can agree with the weight and cost. I have a Jannu myself and like this un it can build up condensation, but you can menage that a bit more by using some rocks or logs to lift the rim of the flysheet a bit.

Great review from the sharp end...thank you. I've been using an Akto for years....really stretched the 4 season rating and it's never let me down. Not as easy to pitch as your featured tent nor quite so bomb proof but lighter and very confidence inspiring as you said. Really like your videos....keep on keeping on please!

Hilleberg can be trusted as long as you do your part in pitching well. I have pitched my Akto in worse conditions , really frightening high wind. The campsite owner insisted that I sleep in a hut but the Akto stayed pitched all night. In high wind and rain, I got some water ingress through the end vents. I found that the Akto needs high wind to stay well ventilated. Check your guy lines at night, the sign of an experienced foul weather camper.

Hello. Well, you have a good camping tent. In my case it is a Hilleberg Allak 3, for 3 people. Of course they are expensive camping tent but they are extremely good. I usually take it in medium and high mountains. I have not tried it with heavy rain but with heavy snowfall and strong winds and for the moment it continues as the first day. Condensation is a problem with all camping tents and this one is no exception. Anyway, congratulations on your purchase and enjoy it a lot. Greetings and great videos

Sorry Claire, I've mentioned before when you were in the Arrans in Snowdonia, it may be a good all weather tent but for the ordinary punter it's excessively expensive ! You would have to have very deep pockets to afford. With the footprint, it's almost £1000 !

@Mike o' Glen not necessarily. I've got a Vango Tunnel tent 25 years old. Been camping in it in Grand Canyon twice. Heavy but sharing the load doable. Also a North Face bivvy tent, cost me under £100 ten years ago, that's also used extensively in the Southwest USA. Still going strong. Some folks love splashing the cash because they can.... no need.

Absolutely love that GoPro shot at 04:07 out of the tent of that sun and golden sky.😊 Great to have such a tent in your armoury that you can use when conditions are bad⛺. I think I’d be tempted to carry it in my car for at least 2 ½ seasons of the year just in case. Appreciate the weight difference though. Already looking forward to next week’s one (you mentioned to me on Facebook) enjoy your birthday!!!!🎂

Great video Clare, thanks for your observations on the tent. It was wise to have a backup bivvi bag when testing a new tent in a Beaufort force 7 'Near Gale' (if you had 60 mph wind). Great show, you are brave, Thanks.

Hilleberg Soulo is a great tent it will protect you, however way too flappy for me in high winds. Much better and at half the price with more room is the USA Kuiu Storm Star. So taut when set up, it just does very little to no flapping even in high winds. Great adventure, keep em coming!
