brandon is such a passionate individual. It actually seems so bizarre to me that someone could spend so much time learning about history, and still sound like he plays 10 hours a day. it's incredible that someone could be a historian and technical virtuoso. he's a god among men, and he carries himself with the casual humility of someone who is absolute sure of himself.

This really brought home to me how I felt after playing flat top and electric for 42 years at an advanced level, I took up classical. It was like the guitar deeply resented by lack of touch and expression. Still trying to catch up ten years later. It was good to see how Rob so quickly go from awkwardness to being musical here, and yet, and yet. Indeed, great classical guitar is soul and love.

I kinda regret not taking my classical guitar lessons seriously enough and then quiting because now I'm dating a girl who's totally into classical guitar music. But all I can do is play the ukulele very badly and electric guitar even worse 😋 She did get me to listen to a lot of John Williams again though. So lately I've found a new appreciation again. Guess it's time to restring mine. Handmade by a German luthier and fortunately I still have it. Still smells like new when I open the case.

I'm in the middle of researching for an assignment into innovations into classical guitar making, and the differences compared to steel string acoustic guitars. Right before I rewatched this, I was reading about all the great luthiers featured here in Making Master Guitars. Ramirez, Hernández, Hauser, Friederich and Torres. This video made me gain a new found appreciation for why these instruments are as special as they are. Putting them into context, they come from a very different time, where you couldn't just make 2 guitars sound similar with post-production tweaks, so players would shop with their ears, picking guitars that suited the way they played and that's definitely something that I need to remember going forward, designing the next 2 instruments that will take me to graduation.

Hey Rob - this is no doubt going to get buried in the comments but I thought I'd put it out there anyway: Since you've been doing this series of videos about different and interesting players and instruments, I couldn't help but think of my bass idol - Michael Manring. That dude is seriously an amazing player with a crazy unique instrument - the Hyperbass. It's a 4 string fretless, 3 octave bass with really light strings, outfitted with extender levers on EVERY string, a bridge that can shift tunings with a lever, AND a pickup for every string in addition to 4 body pickups. The way he approaches and plays the instrument and just approaches music making is astounding, and to top it all off he's a super down to earth guy! I think that if you could get in touch with him and sit down to chat about the instrument and his style, it'd be a really interesting conversation for people to see. He really pushes the boundaries of how I've thought about my playing and how i listen to music, and I think it'd be really amazing to see him on and spread his work around to others. Love your work Rob, keep the amazing content coming! Edit: thanks for the likes guys! I appreciate it and hope you enjoyed the new music - here’s hoping rob sees!

The suggestion was absurd though. He was trying to sell the guitar by basically saying that it played itself. Wth? I suppose "tone wood" back then could not only be very..tonal...but could remember the songs vibrating through them AND play them back through the fingers of the player. Hahaha... silliness I get why someone would pay 150k for it (not 280) but selling it as if it has the spirit of dead masters in it is just gross. It's collectable. The history is awesome. It's of a quality that might cost 1k today though. Unless I'm wrong. 😯

@@CynHicks He wasn't saying that the guitar played itself, he was telling Rob to just play what felt right to him. Between tone and feel each guitar is different and what you would play on one guitar wouldn't necessarily feel right to play on another, his suggestion was basically to hear and feel how the guitar played and go with the flow.

@@CynHicks yes, literally everything you said was wrong. How you even came to that conclusion is beyond me.

I had forgotten how beautiful classical guitars sound, so expressive, so delicate, so richness...

it looks like brandon is so gently caressing the instrument ..like he is consoling it and that he will definitely play them after they have been in the case for so long.

rob: "is the idea that the sides would amplify it?" brune: "yeah we really don't know why they made it like this" literally everyone there for the next 4 minutes: "wow that's really loud" me: hmmmmmm...

You can see the sound hole in the internal back so the sound through a tiny channel and up the sides. I would assume that there is bracing that fans out from the rear sound hole so that the path of the sound is not obstructed.
