Well, the Lost levels was more of an expansion than an actual sequel. So I was happy with the Super Mario 2 we did get, which was Doki Doki panic. It did something different. But we did get it as The lost Levels at least. Anyway, good video.

@On the Stick: 3-1, force you to suicide when not big, his incorrect if you would have bothered to look arround before jumping in the suicide, there his a power-up in that location to get out, and there his also a vine that lead to sky bonus that will get you back to just before the green spring, the vine still work even if it disapear as long as the vine load enough before disappearing.
@SameNameDifferentGame

Yeah, in that particular spot, you can get out of it, but the game doesn't make it easy, and it goes to my overall point that this is a much stiffer challenge than what American players were used to.

I think it's kinda sad that some people prefer the Japanese version of SMB2 just because it played exactly like the first game while US version of SMB2 had its own unique gameplay style, especially since the Japanese version was way too difficult to play and had absolutely nothing new to offer except for Warp Zones that sent players back levels as well as the dreaded Poison Mushroom power-up. :P

Only hipsters that try to act like purists say that SMB 2 Japan is better. Smb2 japan is a complete piece of shit. It seems like an experimental romhack if anything. I wouldn't even call it an expansion. It seems like they were trying to mess around with features and other limitations. SMB 2 USA was cool back in the day... But even I had questions back in the day. Like why cant I stomp on enemies and whatnot. But at least we got a few characters out of it like Shyguys. Looking back now... SMB3 feels like a true sequel. But hey, we live in the romhacking age.

Joe, the fact that in the Japanese Super Mario Brothers 2 do you need to beat the game eight times in a row without any Warp pipes and no game overs play world's 9 a b c and d is a definitive NOPE for me, I'm sticking to the all stars version on Super Nintendo. BTW one game over means you gotta repeat the cycle of beating the game right times.

@@SameNameDifferentGame : Also their his also a vine block, even if the mushroom block make it disapear you can still climb it as long as the vine reach the top of the screen, the sky bonus will exit near the green trampoline, which his just a few step head of the under ground bonus you took. All 3 positive warp zone his in world 1-2, they are all in a seperated room each Warp zone to world 2, 3 , and 4. 5-1 as the warp zone to world 6. 5-2 as both Warp zone to world 7, and world 8 in seperated room each. Notice warp zone to world 1, that his in world 3-1, you can used the warp zone in world 1-2 to go back to world 3, and the spot you got troll, and as long as you already beat the castle from world 1 and world 2, even if you are send back a few world, you don't have to beat does castle again to get world 9, and that his on the NES/Family computer disk system version. The same goes if you found the warp to world 5 in world 8-1, 5-2 can get you back to world 8, and you will not get disqualified for world 9, if this happen in the All-stars version SNES then you would not get world 9, since that version check if you enter a pipe name Warp zone. In The NES version of Lost level you have to beat the game 8 time, beat 8-4 8 times in total, in any condition, that mean you can used warp zone for this and skip castle level, then once you got 8 stars on the title screen hold jump and press start to start on world A-1, World A-1 through D-4 his easier on the NES version then the all-stars SNES version except for C-3 on the NES version but that his only because of a sprite limitation glitch. NES version of world A through D, enemies are not fast, check points still exist except for world D, and bowser does not toss Hammer, even the D-4 Bowser. All-stars version SNES version World A- through D does not need to be unlock, but enemies move fast, check point does not exist, Bowser toss hammers.

I'm glad you mentioned the fact, yes fact, that Luigi is the best. I used to play SMB3 by myself but have it set to 2 player just so I could play through the game as Luigi. #TeamLuigi I love the American SMB2, I think it is the first video game I ever played. Lost Levels is so awful, I think I tried playing it once and turned it off pretty quick. Well at least it introduced Kaizo Blocks and playing as Luigi.

@SameNameDifferentGame

Super Mario USA is a considerable refinement of Doki Doki Panic, so I'm sure they were find with it. Also, by then the Disk System was pretty far out of fashion so a lot of newer Famicom owners without FDSes probably were stoked. (Castlevania 1, for example, got a latter-day cart re-release, too.)

Were there any NES games different from the N.E.S. and N-FAM versions other than Probotector Vs Contra Vs Gryzor "if the uncensored non robots one for the computers made it to the NES at one point as well"? In fact on Contra all 3 versions might be different because the N.E.S. may have also had a bit of censoring on some games although the charactors are uncensored when it comes to games which may or may not have blood in the Japanese original like on shooters which Contra is.
@SameNameDifferentGame

Daniel Cordell There a a couple, I think. But the NES didn't get a lot of traction in Europe, and so the library isn't as big.
@DarronRanston
@DarronRanston 6 лет назад
Okay, gotta set you straight on something. It was specifically a prototype for Mario 2, and it's not that they couldn't make it fun, but that they couldn't make it RUN. This was still early in the console life cycle and a lot of the tricks for getting the most out of the hardware was still undiscovered. By the time Fuji TV rolled around, they had figured out how to get more out of the console. While the setting and enemies were not exactly what Miyamoto had in mind, the mechanics WERE what he had envisioned for a proper Mario sequel. Nintendo didn't just go "Hey, Doki-Doki Panic is fun, but needs more Mario to sell over seas!". New IPs were not something Nintendo feared. The reason it was changed is because the president of the US branch of Nintendo told Yamauchi that Mario 2 Japan was too similar to Mario 1 and too dickishly hard to sell, so they needed a new Mario game, and Miyamoto saw his chance to set right what once went wrong, hoping the next leap would be the leap home... And so he finally got the Mario 2 he always wanted, and we got a much better game for it.
@SameNameDifferentGame
@SameNameDifferentGame 6 лет назад
I'm glad you're here to "set me straight," but I did the research before making this. Both of these points are addressed in a 2011 interview Kensuke Tanabe of Nintendo gave with Wired at GDC. On the first point, he said "the vertical-scrolling gimmick wasn't enough to get us *interesting gameplay*" i.e. they couldn't get it to be fun. It was a working demo on the Famicom. But I guess you would know better than the person who worked on it. On the second point, as I say at 9:36, Tanabe said "We knew these Fuji TV characters wouldn't be popular in America, but what would be attractive in America would be the Mario characters." You can read the whole interview here: www.wired.com/2011/04/super-mario-bros-2/ Then I guess you can email Kensuke Tanabe and "set him straight" about the game he worked on.
@DarronRanston
@DarronRanston 6 лет назад
I'll admit when I'm wrong. Sorry man, though I wasn't entirely wrong. Reading the article and brushing up on Gaming Historian, there were technical issues with the way the Tanabe wanted the original game to be entirely vertical. Also in that very wired article they originally discuss making the game more "Mario-like". Hell, when it became Doki-Doki Panic it had enough Mario references in it because of Miyamoto's involvement that he joked that maybe it was too much like Mario. As for the second point, I didn't mean to suggest that Dream Factory being an unknown in the US wasn't a factor, just that it was more than a simple desire to bring over Doki-Doki Panic. They DID need a Mario game that would sell in America and all the teams had their hands full with other projects, and there was Doki-Doki Panic, with so many already existing connections to Mario, a game they wanted to sell to the US but were unsure of. A perfect moment of killing 2 birds with one stone. Sorry about being a dick about it too. I need to stay away from RU-vid on my PC when I'm hungry and in a bad mood.

Mario Madness on the N.E.S. definitely looked more pleasing than normal 2 on the N-FAM even on the graphics as they were nice and bright. But I do actually think Super Mario All-Stars and World had the best version out of all of them though although it is cheating in a battle between NES/N.E.S./N-FAM though.

Ryan AirZonkWorldChamp: Well they make World A through D harder in the all-stars version as a trade off, because I remember in the All-stars version one level in World A - throughD, if your small mario or luigi your garantie dead, since as soon as you land on the platform the koopa would be in your face, because the koopa move faster, while in the non- all stars version, they are not moving faster in World A through D, so you can make it across as small mario, or luigi, without having a koopa in the face as soon as you land. All Stars version of World A through D, no check points, and bowser toss hammer, it his a real bowser at the D-4 bridge, in the non all stars version of world A-through D, there his still check points, except for castle levels, and world D, Bowser does not toss hammer, and the bowser on the D-4 bridge his an imposter Bowser(this his to prevent adding a star at the title screen when finishing D-4). In the non all-star version to unlocked world A- through D, you have to beat 8-4 a total of 8 times, you can used warp zone to reach 8-4 quicker.
