Hello my loves!!! I think I will be changing my upload day to Mondays, if that's cool with everyone! It puts a lot less pressure on me to get everything done on Sunday night and having to give up a huge chunk of my weekend and then going to bed late only to wake up early for work *looonggg breath*. So long story short, Mondays would allow me to make the best content (as well as these little animated graphics and text I like to add in, hehe). Oh and I MADE TOP 30 OF THE NYX FACE AWARDS SO THERE'S THAT. ok I love you all bye ❤️😂

Another tidbit for those who can't seem to find any good skirts in thrift stores. Circle skirts and pleated/gathered skirts are super easy to sew yourself! In fact a gathered skirt can be made with literally 2 rectangles. There are plenty of tutorials on RU-vid, AND you can pick the fabric you want! Lovely video as always dear!

I have been too scared to try Vintage style outside my house, but I've been following RU-vidrs/Instagrammers and swooning over the style for a solid year now. I have been working at my job for sometime now and I feel too shy to just start dressing so differently. However, I will be hopefully starting my teaching career as an English teacher soon. After watching this video I feel more confident with finally trying to bring it out in public. I now plan on dressing in a Vintage style every Thursday for school as a throwback thursday kind of thing. Thank you for giving me the confidence to do so!

Comfort level advice is FO REAL yo. I've always been drawn to vintage styles, but going all out with foam rollers and perfect winged liner and billion dollar delicate old dresses is far too intimidating. But if you're looking it's really easy to find dresses with fuller skirts and more vintage silhouettes that I love without feeling like I have to do it all.
@whossoul
@whossoul 6 лет назад
It's funny how often I hear people talk about how they want to dress comfortable. I'm like....do you not realize how comfortable a circle skirt is? Its like a big round circle of nothingness! Pants to me are like leg prisons, so I am a hundred times more comfortable in my flowy vintage style skirts and dresses than most modern dressed people who talk about comfort! The shoes....okay, accurate shoes can be uncomfortable, because women always wore heels or wedges back then. I'm totally guilty of wearing flats most of the time for comfort reasons! Oh, and pillow rollers or Rockin' Rollers are way more comfortable to sleep in than foam rollers. Plus you only have to set your hair once a week, if I had to do it every night I wouldn't be down. But once a week I can handle.
@rachelmaksy
@rachelmaksy 6 лет назад
Yes exactly!! And especially if you wear just modern undergarments like I do, it's the same if not more comfortable than modern styles!
@ezridelafuente1181
@ezridelafuente1181 5 лет назад
The thing is, winged liner only really took off in the fifties. In most forties make up advertising, it’s really just light mascara, a red lip, and slightly defined eyebrows, maybe blush, but that wasn’t a need. The fifties is so daunting for me, because I look really weird with winged-liner and it would take so long to do (right now my makeup takes 2 minutes which means more time to fix my hair lol)

Good resources for vintage clothing styles are: "Everyday Fashions of the (name decade) as Pictured in Sears Catalogs", Dover Books, edited by Stella Blum, and "Blueprints of Fashion, Home Sewing Patterns of the 19xx's" by Wade Laboissonniere. Both are available from Amazon, and you can find the decade(s) that interest you. You will find trends for each year, full range of available garments for all ages/genders and accessories as well. Once you have some clear parameters in mind (or written down), your thrift or online shopping can be much more directed and focused.

thank you for the channel recommendation! i had never heard of her before. but it's more of an annoyance on how etsy/ebay sizing is so unreliable - i can typically find my size at most vintage reproduction companies, but it's almost impossible to find my size on ebay/etsy. i just want a beautiful proper vintage piece one day!
@whossoul
@whossoul 6 лет назад
I feel you! I have a 56 inch bust and have accepted the fact that I am never going to find anything vintage that fits me! I used to try though, and would find "plus sized" dress that were a size 14...in vintage sizing. That's not plus size! I eventually realized it's not going to happen, and choose to focus my effort on finding vintage accessories like hats and jewelry instead. Those can fit me and I won't be constantly dismayed about sizing with it!

See I love vintage and other historically inspired clothing but I just need to shift my wardrobe to more skirts. I used to think they weren’t practical and too “dressy”, but I have come to realize that I love to wear skirts and dresses and as Rachel said it doesn’t matter what other people think, it makes me happy. And most of the time skirts are perfectly practical and I can always wear leggings under if I feel the need.

I've been trying to dress more vintage for about a year now. One day I'll be 70's and the next I'll feel like 40's. All of my clothes are from thrift stores or yard sales (some from stores too). I try to look for high waisted pants with an elastic waist (that's most comfortable for me) and make it more modern with a fun button up, a turtle neck or a t-shirt. Just a suggestion for those who don't feel like doing all out vintage but still want a vintage feel. Also, this was a very helpful video! I loved the vibes and the atmosphere and I am definitely going to watch more of your videos!

Reviews on their vintage patterns are available. Most of them are not reprints, but modern patterns that sort of have the vintage look and do not look authentic once sewn. But Vogue apparently purchased many of their patterns back from people and actually did a pretty good job at reprints instead of reproductions. So research the specific pattern number you want and what reviewers said... if you want it to look super authentic, anyways. 😊

This new camera angle is fabulous! But lets talk about your hair- fabulous dahling! I dress vintage too, and I can never get my hair right. Always so frizzy, and it doesn't look neat and clump together like it should:( but yours is goals 💖
@whossoul
@whossoul 6 лет назад
I always had the same problem, and for years was just convinced I can't curl my hair because it was always frizzy. Turns out I just needed to keep brushing it! Like it can take 20-30 minutes (I've heard some women who need like 45 minutes) of continuous brushing to get it to go from frizzy mess to smooth waves. I heard other people say this, and was convinced my hair was just messed up, but they were actually right: just keep brushing! Brush until its not frizzy. It will feel like it's never going to not be frizzy. Just keep brushing! You might also try other rolling methods. I can't use pillow rollers because it's makes my hair have this dry texture that in turn makes my curls more poofy and frizzy. I like the Rockin' Rollers, they are just as easy to use but leave my hair silky smooth!

Laura Ukulele I don't know your waist size but if you look at any vintage ladies who are very skinny or very curvy the vintage style flatters all of them. You can look at some pinup or rockabilly which is a modern take on vintage but you can find more of your size or some pictures for I to but just google it and it will bring you to either websites or you can just look at images. I always thought woman looked better in vintage.
@whossoul
@whossoul 6 лет назад
Size should never keep you from what you like! There are lots of us plus sized girls in the community who rock the vintage style and look amazing doing it! Plus I can tell you as a seamstress who's taken many many classes of fashion design, the "new look" style of the late 1940's and 1950's is exactly the silhouette that plus size women should wear. Plus size girls look best in something that is nipped in at your waist, then flows out from that point down. The new look style (think circle skirt with fitted waist, whats frequently called the pinup look these days) was all about doing the exact same thing, nipping in at the waist to make you look as curvy as possible. Also, while there is no need to, most women back then wore foundation garments (aka shapewear)! And you might be surprised to know that most women who dress in a vintage style now also wear them, curvy or thin!

My waist size in etsy dresses was going to be something like 5x! Lol. I'm not a 2 but I'm normally like XL. My boobs and waist are very close to the sane size. Ha. If you can, go to a very nice designer shop where they dress you. Armani or a smaller designer. They have sales sometimes. I once spent a ton on a real Armani suit because I put it all on and it looked amazing! It scares me how great it looked. It's the clothes. Not your body that's wrong. Great clothes look incredible. Most things on the rack aren't. I return about 90+% of everything I buy online. Lots of bad clothes.

I can't say this enough, but this video is amazing. It makes it so simple to learn how to just add a little vintage into your everyday wardrobe. I wear a lot of vintage skirts, but not tops myself and I feel so pretty in them. But I think after watching this I'm going to start doing just a tad more, like more hairstyles and such. Thank you Rachel for such an in-depth video!

This is SUCH a great video. I just wanted to add one more idea- Amazon. I know, some of my vintage pals are quaking in their petticoats, but hear me out. Vintage can be expensive and difficult to shop for if you are a bigger gal (like me!). A lot of vintage clothes weren't made for plus sized ladies, so, looking for real vintage can be a challenge, and vintage reconstructions can be pretty pricey. My advice to people who are starting to transition to vintage style is to get a few circle skirts, petticoats, swing dresses, and blouses on Amazon. They are relatively inexpensive, come in a variety of sizes, and can be really nice quality. You won't find everything on there (I can't, for the life of me, find a good princess coat!) but you can find some basics and if you don't like them or they don't fit, it is an easy return. You should still look at vintage/thrift stores because you never know what you might find, but look online too! Good luck!

You need way less of hand made rockabilly that you do cheap fast fashion. They're made incredibly well online at etsy. A great fit and construction means less waste as it lasts a long time and wears well.

I had a beautiful pleated, dogtooth, woollen skirt that was my mothers in the 70s/80s, but still had that lovely 40s/50s feel to it. Then the love of my life (and future husband) decided to "help out" and do some laundry. He put my lovely Edinburgh Wool Mill skirt into the washing machine. I mean, if I drop two dress size I may be able to fit into it again, BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I want to start dressing vintage-ish. I want to start wearing woolen jumpers, waistcoats and collared shirts. I don't massively care about my hair or makeup being vintage esk. i own some jumpers I would like to wear in public but I feel like people will stare or laugh. when I put them on in my room I feel downright fabulous but when I leave the house my conference simply evaporates. anybody for any ideas how I could start wearing what i want without feeling out of place?
@rachelmaksy
@rachelmaksy 6 лет назад
It can be really hard in the beginning, but trust me people will love it! I sometimes still get self conscious if I feel like my outfit is too costumey, but I think having an attitude where you don't care what the fluff other people think, it really helps, hehehe. It's easier said than done but you'll get there!

@whossoul 6 лет назад
Yes! I'm always surprised by how many people who dress vintage listen to modern music! If that's what they like that's fine. I just got into vintage fashion because I started getting into rockabilly music, and the style came as an evolution of my love for the music. So it's always makes me do a double take when they don't like any music of that era!

Thank you for this and all your videos. I started dressing vintage years ago and stopped cause I gained weight and the clothes just didn't fit right anyone, not to mention I got a job that has a dress code. But seeing your videos really is encouraging to try it again. You are so effortless in your looks and if I can get to at least half of that then I will call it a win. So in short, thank you for inspiring me to get back into something I really loved and enjoyed. (Sorry for the long comment)

hey Rachel, I love your videos and think you're super positive and accepting of all kinds of styles which is refreshing. I've been dressing 'vintage' (or a term I heard: hintage, which to me is modern with vintage vibes - more versatile maybe idk) for 6 years and agree with a lot of your tips. I have a lot of success at thrift stores more than online since I prefer to try things on before I purchase them. Have you ever used Poshmark? It's an app version of a thrift store/garage sale in my opinion lol. Keep up the great content! :D

Its so interesting, I owned a couple vintage dresses as a teen. Beautiful ones ❤ I even wore one of them (a golden lace dress) at my wedding as my second dress. I used to do my makeup vintage as well and never wore pants growing up. I then went through a weird phase where I got out of it. But now I'm falling back in love with vintage style. It feels very comfortable and beautiful to me. 💕

This was so helpful! Trying to get into a more vintage style myself, and struggling a little bit. I’ve had so much fun playing around, I think foam rollers still have me beat though 😂😂
@whossoul
@whossoul 6 лет назад
Getting roller sets down took me years! It's not just learning how to properly set the hair, but then brushing it out. Once I finally learned to set my hair I would brush it out, it would turn into a massive poof, then I would loose hope and give up! Have you tried other rolling methods? I have tried foam rollers, pillow rollers, traditional pin curls, and Rockin' Rollers and they all give completely different results, and some just don't work for some people. I now exclusively use Rockin' Rollers because they are so easy to use and give me the best results! I've never had a bad set with them, and it takes me about 15 minutes to do a set with them instead of the 2 hours traditional pin curls take me!
@Peiggam
@Peiggam 6 лет назад
whossoul I haven’t! I’ve just been using the foam rollers because that’s what I have in my house. I’ll have to give other methods a try! I don’t know why I assumed they all worked the same. My hair is naturally curly, so I can get a set done fine, but then the brushing absolutely kills it and makes it sooooo frizzy. I just want to brush my hair, it shouldn’t be this hard!
@whossoul
@whossoul 6 лет назад
Oh! Another thing, what type of hair brush do you use to brush out? I kept seeing person after person recommend the Denman 7 row brush but always was like "it's just a hairbrush, what difference does that make?" However, after getting so fed up with things never working, I decided to try the brush, and it seriously made all the difference in the world! I couldn't even tell you what exactly it is about the brush, it doesn't seem that special or different from other brushes, but there's something magic about it, and I now know why almost every other RU-vidr who does vintage wet set hair tutorials recommends that brush!
@rachelmaksy

It's definitely a matter of practice, as cheesy as it sounds! And brushing it out even if it's tiring hehehe
