In this video of the "Scrap Metal Replica", I show how to forge a folded-eye early medieval axe.
In the early medieval the three main techniques of welding cutting edge have been used. 1. asymmetric cutting edge, the piece of steel is forge-weld on to the one side of the axe body. 2. the piece of steel vedge-shape is placed in the slit which is cut in the middle of the end of the axe body and then everything is forge-weld together. 3. The end of the axe body is placed into a v-shape piece of the stell and then forge-weld.

Every piece you forge, be it a spearhead, an axe, a seax or a knife is a work of art and shows excellent craftsmanship and masterful control of the metal, keep up the fantastic work! Also the the improvement of the recording quality is highly appreciated

What are the advantages of the steel rapped around the soft iron axe head?
@officinaferraria
@officinaferraria 2 года назад
The Wrought iron I used has no carbon in the alloy so forge welding is hard and needs a very high temperature. This steel spacer causes better welding at a lower temperatures.

That is fantastically interesting, I've only ever done the second method of adding a bit. I'm going to have to try the other methods now.

Hello Maciej! Very cool and informative video! Very well done! I love to watch you create things! You have such a wealth of knowledge and skill! It is just amazing how you create your axes or spear heads! Wishing you all the best and I hope that one day I'll be making an axe head too! Cheers, Jasmine

I’m curious. What’s the methodology behind the steel spacer for better welding for the eye? To me it would seem to be trickier because you’re now not welding two planes together but 4. It’s all beautiful work!

Wrought iron i use has very low carbon content so it should be forge weld in high temperature (bright withe and sparks), but if you add thin steel spacer between then temperature of the forge welding is lower.

Why use wrought iron+steel instead of fully steel?
@officinaferraria
@officinaferraria Год назад
In historical times steel was much more expensive than low-carbon iron so only cutting edges were steel. I try to reproduce medieval axes in all aspects not only in size but in forging technology also.
