I'm here today because I had a dream in which I saw this legend in all his musical and performing glory.... Sammie Davis Junior; a little man with the most enormous spirit and talents that reach up to the sky and back. I am here to acknowledge him; to remember that he once was and will ever be.
Sammy passed away before the internet took off but, I bet he would absolutely thank the entire internet for their kind words. I'm related to the Will Mastin family by marriage. Although Will Mastin wasn't Sammy's blood uncle, he loved him as much if not more than his own father and took care of both of them until their dying days. Will had a condo in a tower just across the street from the Ambassador Hotel where Bobby Kennedy was assassinated that had a swimming pool on the roof. I remember swimming there at night and seeing all the lights of the city. I only met Sammy a couple of times because he was really never in one place for very long. Always working and honoring his commitments. He broke down a lot of doors to get where he was and hopefully the newer generations appreciate that.
Met him at a house party at 8 Kings House Ave JAMAICA W.I. Ms. MAC house .Owner Macs enterprise at Slipe Rd. I was probably 12 years old.. VERY FRIENDLY little MAN that i clearly remember.
It has taken me 50 year to understand the works of Mr. Davis. Remarkably, now I listen and return to the begining.I feel the hidden, the emptiness, darkness and that which is without limits - water!
I rewatch this and all his videos over and over. OMG he was SO wonderful. It broke my heart the day he died. Taken from us way too soon. Love you Sammy. You were the BEST bar none. 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
❤ Loads of love in homage to one of the greatest performers to ever grace theaters and stages. I had the privilege to see him on a Broadway stage in Golden Boy during the summer of 1964.
I first saw Sammy live at the Pigalle nightclub in London in 1961. He was, as always, sensational. It was his first live appearance at a London nightclub.
You could never see a performer of his caliber, he had the best presence i ever saw live, his story is a God given miracle he had to teach himself even to read he was working with his uncle the will mastin trio, he was a self made performer , will never be forgotten. A sheer pleasure to watch.
I just can't stop watching his videos. What a voice. Gives me goosebumps. Love everyone of his songs. Thank you for leaving all these precious moments for the future generations to enjoy them.
