In a world that 99.9% of the bands are touruing just for the money while they hate each other, is great to see guys having real fun onstage. Even jason is singing.
It's not just the chops either. It's his chemistry with Sammy and the rest of the band, the respect for the material, and total lack of ego about the part he's playing... He really is the perfect man for the job.
Watching Satriani concentrate and focus on playing these songs, makes you realize what an exceptional talent Eddie was. He used to play these notes as easy as breathing.
@@Midnighthacker951 No. Not Necessarily. It’s about talent, first and foremost. Then memory and muscle memory. As an example, watch Stevie Ray Vaughn play Voodoo Child on RU-vid. He didn’t write that song, but he plays it like no one else can. A master at his craft, just like EVH.
I was at the recording (I was 10) and have watched the video dozens of times since. What's great about Satriani's performance here is that it's not a note for note reproduction of EVH's playing. It's Satch playing Van Halen.
@rbart75 I agree. Jason is no Alex either, but had his own take. All in all, the energy was great to see and hear from each one of these fellas. Honestly, it is exactly what has been missing in music these days. Why does everything have to be morbidly depressing?
The tone Joe achieved for this tour is not only perfect, it's one of the best guitar tones he's ever had. I'm very curious and optimistic to hear the impact of this on his next solo album. Not to mention that we have, more than ever, a great reason for Chickenfoot to return.
You old VH fans are hilarious. The amount of negative comments and bitching I've read over the past few days about the shows are bogus. Satriani is doing a great job, and they all sound good. It's better than having Roth doing vocal these days, since he's lost it. If you want Eddy to play it, go listen to some records. and stay home. These guys are having a blast and it shows.
How somebody can insult Joe Satriani is a mystery. Food for thought: Music is no place for superlatives. If you like it, great. If you don't - go listen to something that you like.
We were there! Amazing show with phenomenal musicians. Out of hundreds of live shows I've been to, Sammy is the only one that every made me feel like we were friends by the time I left the show. Great dude who must be drinking from the fountain of youth for him to be able to perform like he does at 76 effing years old! And Satch... so effortless, even filling in for Eddie! Great rhythm section with Bonham and the great Michael Anthony and his KILLER background vocals!
I hope I'm in that good of shape when I'm 76 yrs old. Sammy is still rocking. Love Jason's bass drum tribute to his dad. Michael Anthony has still got it too - the coolest bassist in rock who always rises above the BS
@@andrearel3703 I at first thought it was that Marxist Revolutionary piece of shit too and I was like GREAT, just another know nothing rocker piece of shit that don't know history or is a Marxist or Commie. Then I thought maybe it is his dad. Honestly not sure but still leaning toward it is Che. No respect for anyone who reveres Che. Seems many of the young think it's cool to do so. They're idiots.
I was at this show last night! I was expecting it to be good based on who was on stage, but it far exceeded those expectations! True professionals having fun and absolutely delivering!
Of course it was effortless for him to play the stuff that he came up with. Doing someone else's stuff always requires more concentration-especially if you are trying to re-create stuff note-for-note.
@@jackgilreath3113 Satch Having to Replicate EVH in itself would require Huge Focus NOT because EVH was a Legendary Guitarist ( which he was ) but more The expectation of it . EVH played it effortlessly because it was his own if he fucked up no one would give a damn or even notice . but if Satch or any other Guitarist covering an EVH song Fucked up even just Little bit There'd be a shit Storm of "He Sucks, why choose him" Comments... such is the human race.
Mikey's backing vocals are as much of the Van Halen sound as Eddie's guitar! Hearing him still doing what he does it's just the special sauce that makes it work so amazingly!
Nope all eras! This has been my fav song of all time since I first heard the album. And it got so little attention it’s weird. When I turned 16, got my license, hit the road for the first time, this was the first song cranking out of my moms Subaru speakers 😂😎
Bravo Gentleman. Sounds great. My favorite song from this album. Almost 40 years later and it still pumps me up. Thank you for the music fellas. And RIP to the great one EVH
Such a trip watching my #2 guitar hero pay homage to my #1 guitar hero’s songs. I got into both courtesy of a Guitar for the Practicing Musician issue (May 89) featuring transcriptions of Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love and Ice 9. And now here we are with Joe playing EVH beside Sam and Mike. So cool. 😎
Thank you! I read some really stupid comments about Satriani on some of the other videos posted. How anyone a say the Joe is not phenomenal is crazy. Also some people don’t understand that Joe Satriani will still sound like Joe Satriani playing a VH song. And if Eddie played Satch Boogie he would still sound like himself.
Michael Anthony. Binging it on HOME for close to 50 years. What a VOICE. Sammy, God bless him, is losing his edge. He's 70-freaking-2, ferchrissakes. But Michael pulls it back in line. Just like he did for Roth all those years ago!
Sammy is 76...in 3 months will be 77. And I think he still sounds great. Michael was always solid - and always under-appreciated (but not by Sammy). All of them sound great and I am glad that they are still doing. I can't say that about all the guys who are still out there doing it "later in life".
Man, you guys must not know what Sammy once sounded like. He's nowhere near capable of singing these songs well anymore. Michael has to graciously help with every high note or the crowd gets a mic pointed at them. I love Sammy but Father Time is undefeated. @jb9dog
He's such a good study. Joe has always been about accuracy. He stays true to what Eddie did yet he puts a little sauce on it.... Always been one of my favorite players.
GREAT MUSIC GUYS , I really like the way Joe is playing the intro and chorus , it so much easier than Eddies Chords . Great Job !!! guys , Eddie would be proud !! LOng Live The King EVH !!!
You know, I have seen van halen since 1981 at the ampertheater chicago, and there is not 1 cover band that's good in my opinion, Joe on guitar unbelievable, nailed it. Of course for wolf at the Hawkins tribute, which I still have goose bumps from hearing him play, sammy, mike, joe, and Jason, you guys nailed it. Nice work and thank you
Mr. Hagar…from a true and long time Van Halen fan, I wasn’t sure how they would ever replace David Lee Roth. Once I heard you with the band, it was obvious you were and are the man. You brought an element that couldn’t be replicated. I’ve been to your Cabo Wabo in Cabo numerous times…to the point your house band drummer started recognizing me and gave me a pair of his sticks ( I’m a drummer myself) lol. I still have them with the “Cabo Wabo Cantina” stamped on them. Keep rocking sir. You are THE MAN!!!!
Thanks for clearing that up for me….i was on pins and needles waiting for Sammy to call me personally. You keep chugging Tiger. I don’t care if you eat crayons and lick bus windows…you’re still a winner in my eyes.
THIS song, got ME into tuning the low E string down to D or D flat ( depending on how the entire guitar is tuned of course) Way before the 90's bands were doing it. The genius of EVH
This probably is my all-time favorite VH song. And seeing this unit attack it so well is inspiring. I really feel like Eddie is looking down and smiling. If I am Joe, I am totally honored to be playing Eddie's parts and I think I see that coming through in Joe's constant smiles while he plays!
Michael Anthony the bass player every singer wants to have in his band!!! At <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="290">4:50</a>.. Sammy Hagar pulls the microphone away from his mouth. And just listen how perfect Michael Anthony is filling in with background vocals. He is one in 1 billion bandmember member. Unbelievable bass player, fantastic singer. And all-around great human being.👍👍🤘🤘🤘
Great job guys. Satch did this difficult song justice but isn’t it weird how nobody ever sounds like Ed. Something about his hands, soul, genius. I miss You Eddie.
We had a rain delay for Sunday's concert in Tampa. But once it started they tore the house down. Also tribute to Eddie and Toby Keith. I swear its the tequila that keeps him going. Awesome time !!!!
God damn this sounds so GOOD! I love that Joe put his own spin on Eddie's insane solo. Going out there and replicating Eddie note-for-note would be boring, this is a very happy medium.
To my hearing it has no swing that EVH invested …. Not that I could do what JS does .. but it just sounds stiff n technically perfect that may loosen up in time …?
What an absolute pleasure to all these guys to see them having the time of there life !! Great performance and vibe !! I think Eddie would be smiling down !! Would love to see the show 👍👍
The youngest guy here is Jason Bonham (58). The rest are bumping 70 are over 70. I'm a proponent of knowing when to give it up, but I could listen to these "geezers" hours on end!
One of my favorite Sammy songs from this era. You can tell, for the first time ever, Sammy is truly struggling. He has taken so good care of his voice and it has been so long, I just was in denial it would ever happen. So glad they are doing this though. At least Sammy and Mike will have no regrets.
Mikey still on point with harmonies. Jason with his dads face on the double bass drums. : chefs kiss: I remember blasting this the summer of ‘86 in my car as a teenager.
This has always been my favorite VH song, or at least tied with "Humans Being." The opening lick and guitar tone convey such a manic energy, dropping down to a pretty minimalist rhythm during the lyrics. The tie into the "5150" tagline they adopted for the police code, but Sammy instead uses the numeric value itself to describe an imbalanced relationship. The outro harmony vocals repeating "I'll meet you half the way" in that high register. It's just musical mastery and they did it on their very first album together. I've always wondered why they didn't try to release it for airplay (maybe they did?). I'm so pumped to see this performed live on tour!
took me a few listens to really appreciate Joe's interpretation of this but I really love it...its almost like if he is another guitar player in Eds band..not stepping on his toes just playing a simplified version of the rhythm guitar but super tastefully and almost playing harmonizing chords at some parts...and the solo dances around Eds in such a nice way....the end of it is my favourite part when he chunks down on the chords instead of hitting the high single notes, the last chord is perfect
this is great-solo at 3.30 is banging and Michael Anthony is a serously unacknowledged player and backing vocalist.Good to see Bonzo jnr giving it full whack on the double bass kit.Come to the UK lads.
It's just different enough that satch can put a signature on it as a cover! It also, for the Van Halen fan, demonstrates just how different Eddie played!
This is as close as we are all going to get to a VH show you still have half the band there with the same charisma. Michael Anthony’s powerful backing vocals still very strong. They are very happy still going strong into the 70s and Joe Satriani is just carving it up. There would not be any other guitarists who could pull this off They are very humble men giving the fans what they want and I hope they do it for many many more years congratulations. I just wish you would come to Australia and do it.
Jason has that heavy and precise thud that made me love Alex's drumming. I may be speaking mostly for me, but what I loved about Alex's drumming was what I call a heavier version of Keith Moon's more is more style. I loved the tuned sound of explosive lower mid-range and powerful kick bass sounds that elevated everything. Plus, the apple sure didn't fall far from the tree either so his playing is always a homage to his dad's style too. Excellent!
Too damn bad Alex won't join in. This isn't a money grab. It's a celebration of EVH's work. Seriously, I don't think Eddie would mind. If he couldn't be there then who better than his brother to carry the torch?
What inspired choice to ask Satriani to play with the band. You can get 1 million guys who could play the song sound kind of like Van Halen but he’s still himself while making sure that Eddie songs still sounds like Eddie. Have to try to make one of their shows this year. Sounds amazing …. Especially at their ages.
Hopefully they release a concert blu ray of this tour to catch lightning in a bottle, but I won’t hold my breath. This is a great sounding band Sammy and Mike put together! They sound much tighter than the VH reunion tour back in 2004 I attended. The night I saw them in Minneapolis was actually painful to watch and unfortunately Ed was not at his best. Concert tickets 🎟️ for that show weren’t cheap and we left disappointed.
