Thats what so few actually realize about EVH's masterful playing, his rhythm work. Its what he is all about. Its why he was a game changer and the greatest rock and roll guitarist of all time. He always played for the band but was such a innovater he created a whole new way to play a guitar solo for a song.
Whoever overlooked his rhythmic playing sure missed the boat! Dude was the total package which is what makes him the GOAT! For me, his rhythm playing was just as good if not better than his solo work....impeccable all around! RIP King Edward. 😪
VH seemed to be happier when SH was their singer. He seems to have less ego than their first singer. But the 2 brothers also seemed a bit hard to deal with at times. 🤔
except Nuno is in the wrong generation. Steve Vai musically is better then Ed. but like Ed said, this aint the Olympics, its not a sport its music. you either like it or you dont. for me Ed is my favorite. i like steve as well. Nuno is just in the wrong time so I refuse to listen@channel296
Live Without a Net is proof of that. They were a juggernaut. Only other band that was on the same level was Metallica during AJFA tour from 88-90. Scorched earth.
Most people usually talk about Eddie's technique, but I am always blown away by the emotional impact his performances deliver. He's so naturally gifted, that the guitar just seems like it's a part of his body. One of the best ever.
I’m only 22 years old - but FUCK am I glad my father raised me in Van Halen. They simply don’t make music like this anymore. So much raw emotion, feeling, rock ‘n roll. It’s so good I almost want to cry 😂
Welp the sad part is people can still make music in the old style... since it's not the efficient or popular choice anymore it's more expensive. Record live, use tube amps, etc.
will say it a million times, and mean it everytime Being a guitarist myself, I know what EVH was to me. Everyone else here knows what he meant to them. You can throw out all the superlatives you want about The Master, but there is never going to be an argument about his mastery of his chosen art. No else had players around the planet going "What the F is that". From his grin to his fingers Eddie was born to bring us joy through his expression of his art, and you can thank whatever god you believe in that he shared his joy with us. ALWAYS #1 UNPARALLELED. When the master emerged, from the opening chords of you really got me, every player knew the sonic landscape was changed in a way that was unheard of up to that time. Eruption smashed his foot onto your throat daring you to try to emulate him. No one can. There was never anyone like him, and there will never be another, and I miss his artistry.
“…you can thank whatever god you believe in…” I loved this! Great comment bringing us all together. We’re never going to be united again once the godless globalists take the US down this November. Scary! Miss EVH.
There is only 1. The master exploded on the music scene and left scorched earth in his wake. Every guitar player knew the landscape had changed in a remarkable and spectacular way. There have been hundreds maybe thousands or even millions of imitators since. There will never be another like Him and I miss him. The MASTER, Edward Van Halen.
RIP Eddie. His rhythm playing is SO underrated. This is one of my all time favorite songs by him, and it is also a great showcase of his rhythm playing.
No need for a rhythm guitarist here. Eddie and Michael got that covered, Eddie’s rhythm playing IS underrated, and so is Michael Anthony as a top tier bass player. RIP Eddie...miss you already man
@@gashthrasher_8976 That's true but I understand what they mean; just phrased it wrong. It's fair to say that a lot of people who loved Eddie were so enamored of his solos that they often failed to comment on his great rhythm skills; too busy praising his leads.
@@Gregorypeckory Yes, exactly. Not worded wrong. Eddie's rhythm playing is rarely discussed in conversations about his playing. It's usually his soloing.
Riffing, rhythm and he still ad-lib s his fills, licks, the solo the whole lot! It’s bloody fantastic. What a incredible guitar player Ed was. I know nothing lasts forever. We knew his health was bad for a long time. It’s been nearly 2 months now but I still can’t believe someone with that much life, talent and energy has gone. It’s just so sad.
Alex truly drives the band. He plays with such power and authority. There are drummers who tag along and there are drummers who drive it like they stole it.
+Strngs012 ya have to wonder if Ed ever misses playing this era of stuff. He says the fans want CVH, which for the most part is true, however this version of CVH is only a shadow of its former self. Sammy vocals are still very good, and they could put on a show that would definitely sell out venues like MSG. Not with Dave though, and I am a fan of all versions of VH....
They really should find a singer who can really give both era's the respect they deserve. There's a lot of good songs from 5150 and OU812. It started going to shit around F.U.C.K. ..but those two albums were very good.
+EVILSPAWN1003 funny you mention, he says in interviews that is how wrote a lot of the music. Drinking and doing coke in his hotel rooms jamming on his guitar coming up with most of the music for VH songs while the other guys were out partying.
I swung by his childhood home in Pasadena. Drove around out back, stood on the bed of my pickup and peered over the fence. There was a crater center of the yard, remnant from a lightening bolt. Strange this was, my was compass was all fucked too. Needle wouldn't stay in one place. Swear to God. Nah only kidding, 'bout the compass part.. But I did reach under that fence, filled up a baggie full of dirt. I keep that shit in my case..
This is hands down my favorite VH song from the Sammy era. Maybe of all time. The energy of this song is bombastic. Eddie's playing is flawless. The band was so tight that it hurts. Sammy singing in natural tuning. Solo is a monster. It may be better than the studio version. Good Lord, could these guys jam. Man. I miss Eddie already.
I know you penned the comment 2 yrs ago, but I agree with you about 100%. This is a damn seminar on how to write a rock song, then go and kill it live. I can play this....and I sound like...me, lol, I am no Ed VH !!
let`s be honest..there is absolutly no way to play a guitar more alive, original and powerfull then Eddie does here...this is a lesson in godlike guitarwork
10 months later, and I still tear up seeing these old concert videos of Eddie playing. I've never realized how much he influenced me as as player, performance mannerisms and all, until he passed. He'll forever be my favorite player of all time,
get sad all the time watching old videos of the artists i love whether they are still here or gone. because i just start looking at and thinking about how young they were at the time, but then i start thinking about how young i was and get even more sad. this is 89 so i was only a junior or senior in high school, now im 50! what happened.
Why don’t people recognize this song as being the masterpiece that it is? I mean...any time someone pulls the “DLR/real rock n roll” argument, just tell them to listen to this song.
Everyone knows the album version and the legendary live version from Live without a net but for some reason, this version somehow steps out from behind the shadow of the version in live without a net. I also love how you can clearly hear the echo on Sammy’s voice! Too many times that kind of authenticity to the live shows is lost to the editing process when being released commercially. For some other reason this video feels so authentic to the real live experience when I put on noise canceling headphones and close my eyes. It’s as close as it can feel for me while thinking to hearing it live in person. I was lucky enough to be right in front of Eddie at a show in Philly back in the 90s. I was literally 10 feet from him. That wasn’t a concert attended, that was an EXPERIENCE to cherish.. Man, the world lost a great innovator with that so very unique mind. As I study his music, method, technique and sound, I get so overwhelmed with wanting to know it all at once! It’s just too much to process. He truly was our modern day Mozart/Beethoven.
I have seen VH 7 times. At MSG in N.Y. during the 1984 tour I was able to make my way to the front row an stand right in front of him. I am a guitarist and I was watching every single note he played when he was standing still right there a coule of feet away. He definatel saw me watching , because he gave me a impish little grin and he winked at me. He knew damn well I was picking his brain and he was probably telling me by that wink "you see this ? " Hahaa, go ahead and try to play it " Not trying to insult me, rather, "you now know the way I play , go for it, and lol..good luck! 😜💥
I do like the Live Without A Net version a little better. That solo was so epic with the time transitioning and use of different effects, then he changes gears and goes into the stratosphere.
The guitar has a more distinct tone in this version that i really like, but LWOAN has that Sammy scream near the end that this lacks. So i listen to both.
100% I love Sammy, but personally still love the DLR VH records just a little more overall. This song and a few others from the Sammy days are every bit as monumental and fantastic as anything they ever did though. It's not often that a live performance elevates and already phenomenal song to an entirely higher level, but this one did. Just puts goosebumps on your arms and a tear in your eye.
And the album version itself remains a classic! But that song just comes alive when played live. It truly deserved to be a single and a staple of their shows. Sadly, after this tour it wasn't really played live much until this summer.
I don't know why I keep watching VH videos here. Just makes me cry a little each time. But luckily, a little less and less each time...but the ache remains.
Also one of the most underrated of Van Halen´s vocalists. Sammy Hagar has one of the all-time classic voices of rock. He also had a very healthy and convincing solo career. Great man!
My favorite Sammy era song. Mike and Sammy nail those vocal harmonies in the chorus. And holy crap, the solo in this live version is insane! Then the drums after... They were firing on all cylinders back then. I wish they had half this mojo with the Dave reunion.
Marc Sherman Totally agree. 78-84 with Roth is my favorite but I really enjoy almost all of the Sammy stuff too. I mean, how can anyone watch this video and not dig it?
And that, boys and girls, is how you rock n roll. Never will we see this kind of talent on stage together again. New bands will never touch it. They grew up too coddled by Mommy and Daddy and will never get the depths of creativity like this. Salute gentlemen
Yes it was MA... Just look at how he pulls away from the mic and the tone stops. Timing.. Besides, he was known for the high pitch. Just read this interview with Sammy... "He was born with a really high voice" not a singer though. ultimateclassicrock.com/eddie-van-halen-michael-anthony-comments/
+Josh Costa Gosh, in the 80s music got everyone's blood pumping and fists punching the sky! Must have felt so good! Then computers came along. Now its all limp, lame and electronic. Not real! Keep it real!
Eddie's solos were so mesmerizing that his rhythm playing doesn't get the credit deserved. He defines melodic rhythm guitar! There is no better guitar player ever, than EVH! Thank you sir for all of the fantastic memories and giving your gift to all of us!
This is one of my favorite all-time VH songs, and definitely one of my favorite guitar riffs of all time. So underrated. This is probably the best version of the song. Hagar's vocals are amazing in this clip.
As a guitar player, I just tried playing with a drummer for the first time and it was humbling. We were trying to play a fairly simple song and it was not easy to get in sync. Hearing and seeing Van Halen playing such a complex song with such ease and artistry... I have a new level of appreciation for how difficult it is to pull off a performance like this.
And the "voice"! Now I'm a die hard fan for life but Sammy walked into this Juggernaut with some big shoes to fill. For the fans and the band. And freaking OWNED it!!! MY own opinion, but VH made some of their best music during those years.
IMO VH would have withered away and disgraced themselves if DLR stuck around. SH extended the band's life. I hope to hear SH and the Circle play this song someday.
Hey VH fans! Did you the baby from 1984 is of Carter Helm when he was four. Now he lives in Sanfransico and sells marine insurance. .....oh you need a 5150 bit do you. Ok did you know the only image known of Claudio (the mechanic that introduced Ed to Sam) is in the first few seconds of "I can't drive 55."
Greatest Rhythm Player in Rock History. Everyone I know who can play this song say its one of the funnest songs ever to play...if u can hit that groove and timing right.
This song is the best. Great album. Great imagination and creativity. I love how these guys are just about the fun of rock and roll, but without the cheese factor of glam-rock (no offense to my long haired brothas that are into wearing lipstick!) :)
Honestly, as much as I love some classic DLR Van Halen songs, I'd much rather have Sammy as the lead singer. Sammy brings a good show and a sense of professionalism to his acts. I also think Sammy sounds just as good live. I hope and pray that VH decides to reunite with Sammy and Michael Anthony. If they did, I'd spend as much money as possible to see them live
Lost in EVH's masterful guitar playing is the absolute genius of Alex on the drum kit. Hot for Teacher is one of my all-time favorites. I crank it right to 10 every time it comes on.
This song is literally so underrated, together with the other bangers from their 5150 album like why cant this be love, best of both words and especially dreams! I discovered this album a couple weeks ago and i havent listened to anything else since, the energy it gives is just insane 💥
I don’t know if you know but I have a friend who is a nurse and she has a lot of experience in the field and she has a lot of experience in nursing and she has a lot of experience in nursing and she has has a lot of experience in nursing and she has a lot of experience in nursing and she has a lot of knowledge
Stellar performance! My fave Hagar era tune. I’ll put the Dave vs Sam dispute to rest right here: when any vocalist can’t deliver the high notes live as heard on the record, enter Michael Anthony. He saves the day every time!
Great example of many Van Halen riffs full of musical optimism. A sound I can’t explain other than it’s enriched with high energy and a kind of music that has an eye for the light at the end of the tunnel. Don’t give up. Ever.
If Van Halen fans could ever get off the Sammy sucks bandwagon they’d realize this song rules. My absolute favorite Eddie chorus. Such great rhythm playing. Peerless.
Edward, you will forever be the master and the biggest reason I picked up the guitar in 1978. Thank you for every drop of blood sweat and tears, shed by millions in our quest to become better. I love you brother and so sorely miss you. I hope you have finally found peace in your newest stage of the eternal journey sailing the cosmos. 🎸🎼🎶🎹🔊💥👽
I've always been an Eddie Van Halen fan and I spent all of my twenties and thirties listening to Eddie and Alex Van Halen. Alex has got to be one of the best drummers I've ever heard.......
