It's a tribute. People need to be nice about it. Original band members had their chance to join in. Same with Wolfie. They declined. I've been to see Sammy , Mikey & Jason at several shows recently. They were great shows. Packed audiences. These guys aren't 30 anymore, so they have to take it down into a different level. Joe & Jason aren't Eddie & Alex - but they are super talented and worth the ticket price to see them play! Sammy put up his own money to sponsor this tour. Give it a chance.
Also, it always makes me laugh when people make sweeping judgements based off of random cell phone videos. Because if you want to hear what it’s like to be there, it’s some random person 200 feet away 😂. Nothing against the people posting, but context is key. There have been a few shows I’ve been to that sounded great and then I find some videos posted from it and it sounded completely different
Why can't peeps just let them pay homage to their friend and musical genius, it takes BRASS balls to do what Joe Satriani is doing! Thank you to all involved with this tour. Eddie deserves it.
because they weren't friends. If you're an actual Van Halen fan, you would know that Eddie would not be good with this. Eddie, Alex, and Sammy haven't spoke for nearly a decade. Sammy wrote a a lot of shit in his book about the brothers Eddie and Alex. It was a deal breaker for them, and it was over.
@@XXXGIUTARBUMYOU are sadly mistaken. Eddie and Sammy made piece months before Eddie passed and they were even planning “The Kitchen Sink Tour” with everyone. If you’re a true Van Halen fan as you say, you would know that. And for the record, Sammy has been on tour since the late 90s playing Van Halen songs. Where have you been???
Probably because the setlist isn't what Hagar was promising. He said the tour was going to do a deep dive into the VH catalogue and honour the legacy, but then they go and play the singles, standard concert tunes, and just three Roth-era songs, with one of them either incomplete or part of a medley. This isn't the tour we were told we'd be getting. Many cannot see the promised honouring of Eddie's memory or the the Van Halen legacy. It's just a Sammy Hagar & Friends show.
You know, I really wasn't a huge fan of the sammy hagar era for the longest time, but since about 2015 or so, I've become hooked on it. The guy is so Multi talented! Hell, at least he actually sings in concert, and he does this particular song justice.
Hagar is not talked about enough as one of the great frontmen of all time.. From Montrose, to Sammy Hagar 1.0 to Van Halen to Sammy Hagar 2.0 to Chicken Foot To Sammy Hagar and The Circle.
🎸 🎸 🎸 Don't wait to see your heros, tomorrow is not promised to anyone. Im glad I got to see EVH perfom live! I'm definitely gonna check out Sammy and band in Los Angeles 🎸 🎸 🎸
When Lemmy passed it changed my thought process. Have been going to see a lot more bands/artists. Will be seeing these guys in Toronto. Looking forward to it!
I swear people just come on here to spread negativity, guys pushin 80 years old. They sound amazing , the phones are great but they don’t replicate the experience of being there and hearing it LIVE
People … this isn’t a Van Halen show. This is a show with the former lead and bass player of VH, along with a renowned guitarist and drummer paying tribute to the greatest rock guitarist ever. Enjoy the moment. Enjoy the music. Nothing like this will ever happen again - not with this level of talent on the stage.
It was a fine job by the boys, and I can't wait to hear more. I will say, however, that it always takes me a minute to calibrate when hearing these songs being played in different keys.
There aren’t too many of these bands left that actually play in the original keys. It’s good that they all pushed themselves when writing the songs, because for me at least, a little bit of the impact is lost in the lower keys. Just my thoughts though.
@@brushman20 I totally get it. It's hard enough for a singer in their "prime" to perform in original keys for 2+ hours. It's not bad when it's a half or even a full step. But when it's 3 steps down, it's a full-on key change. That said, Mike "Cannon Mouth" Anthony's trademark harmonies still sound f'ing fantastic at 70 years young.
RIP Eddie Van Halen, what a tribute to him. Whether it is Joe Satriani or Vic Johnson bringing lead guitar we should appreciate THEIR efforts to keep this music alive with Sammy and Mark Anthony. I would have liked to see Alex Van Halen on the drums, but he has chosen to be silent and although it is disappointing, I will respect his decision. All I say about Alex is that he gave us some amazing drumming that showed off his greatness, as did the rest of the band. Viva the music of Van Halen FOREVER!
Sammy shouts the years for the Hagar era songs incorrectly pretty much every time. Just ignore it. Although technically the LRHRN version of it came out in 93.
David Lee Roth, Wolfie on guitar, Alex on drums, and Michael on bass would be the best lineup to capture the original Van Halen sound. Let's make it happen!!
AMAZING AMAZING concert ... Aaaah I wish I was there ... Dear Sammy and band : after the American dates, pleeease, come to Europe for more concerts ... pleeeease ... With love Kostas from Greece
I think Joe's tone is the best he's ever had. Of course he's paying tribute to Ed but man, it's a BIG sound! So glad he worked with 3rd Power to get setup for the tour. And I love his playing. Not a carbon copy of Ed's material, but his own interpretation while still being very respectful. Sounds amazing all around.
Man… Trying to hit those high notes like he did in his earlier years is gotta be like a major league baseball player trying to throw a 90 mile fastball in his 70’s! Gotta Love the effort and his enthusiasm and passion for his music!
What your ear is really missing is the Alex swing. This drummer just doesn’t have that. Josh freese did a great job of it in the hot for teacher at the Taylor tribute.
I was there it was well worth the ticket price just wish they had done more classic VH. Right Now was by far the best song - nailed it. Joe did a a “good “ job - coming from a guitar player and EVh fan.
SOOO REALLY MUCH FUN that these guys are still playing with us. These guys had the entire globe for a playground AND lots of play money too! Timeless love of music.....
To be honest, I saw Van Halen back in the 80's and 90's in LA, they sounded way better than they did after they made they several attempts to reunite. Roth and the Van Halen brothers & son kinda sounded like sh*t when they tried to force their magic. I think the last time they sounded good live was right about the time they broke up with Sammy, then drugs, alcohol and money took over...it all became sad. As for this band, got to give them this much, at least they're trying.
@@bobabooey4537 yea thats what was lacking with the first roth tour too, vai & bissonette werent ed and alex, what do expect from guys who have their own sounds and styles
Jason does a better job playing Alex than Joe does playing Eddie because Alex wanted to sound like John Bonham and Jason plays like his dad. He's really the best fit for playing Al's parts besides Al himself.
@@RyanConnell5150 Totally agree with analyzing Bonham. As for Satch, it's safe to say that NO ONE is going to play like Eddie...he was that great and unique. I think all these guys are trying to do is pay tribute to the original Van Halen songs, since Sammy and/or Mike had a hand in that success. Like Sammy said, he's getting old, so this may be the last time he'll be able to do this. KEEP ROCKIN' GUYS!
It is a tribute to years, and keeping the music alive. Rocking through the ages. Keep rocking Sammy. You don't last that long in the business, not being pure to the music 🎶 😊 A true national treasure 😊
To any critics...Sammy and the band are outstanding....they provide a fitting tribute to every member of VH and it astounds me that at their ages that they can all perform at such an high level....let's face it at 70+ the majority of the population can walk let alone sing and play at such an high level.....fans in the US are so lucky to see the band play live.....hope the fans in the UK/Europe and the rest of the world get the same chance....until then the clips and hopefully a live album will have to do...long live Sammy and the band and long live memories of Van Halen...Montrose...Chickenfoot....Gamma...Ronnie Montrose and Eddie Van Halen 🇬🇧✌️🇺🇸
Better than Dave now and better than lip syncing to backing tracks. Most guys from that era aren't this good when they were in their 60's never mind late 70's.
I was at the show, it was Great! Joe did a great job, anyone who says otherwise knows nothing about guitar. I love Eddie and no one will ever replace him but this was close. You are never going to see VH songs preformed like this again, may as well enjoy it. I thought Loverboy sounded good as well. Well worth the ticket price.
@@rq5663Hey troll, go watch the latest Satch/Vai tour they did together and then comment. You really think this 3 chord songs are hard to play? Joe is having fun playing how he wants to play them. Deal with it!!
Torn on this, Eddie disciple, love Mike, Sammy is awesome, Satch is blisteringly amazing, Bonham is cool as well. Might go see them next week in Charlotte. The biggest thing I see tho is all the people who think they are there, and aren't. Put down your phone. Live in THAT moment. Is absolutely ridiculous to me.
Satch is Satch. Won't pretend to be Eddie. Got a great sound for this band - custom amplifier developed for this tour. Got them slick licks from a decades long bag of tricks.
The problem with tuning down When It's Love so much is that means tuning Mike's backing vocals too. They don't have quite the same punch at 2 semitones lower.
Look....Sammy is going on 77 years old, the age where most people are in Assisted Living or Nursing Homes. It's a miracle he still sounds this good and can even do a full set and tour at his age. No, he can't go full throttle like he could 30 years ago, but nobody on Earth can. At his age, Sammy cannot possibly tour much longer. If this is final lap around the track, let's all just enjoy the long overdue Van Halen tribute. Yes, its sucks Alex and Wolfgang Van Halen are being assholes and refused to play, but what else would you honestly expect from those two jerks?!?!?
@@DanielC__ Agreed. It looks more like a dress rehearsal. Hagar, with all that dough, should fill out the stage with some other musicians, or high class strippers, or something.
As a VH fan it pains me to even write this but it’s not what I had imagined 😞 My son was disappointed we couldn’t make their concert but I’ll show him this video and he won’t feel so bad.
What were you expecting out of two guys in their 70s, a 67 yr old guitarist, and a drummer who’s 57? please tell me you at least had some idea that the first show of the tour would be a little rough
@@knightfall9394 hey don’t shoot the messenger! Lol I actually love Sammy and Michael and follow them on social media. I expected something closer to their VH days. There are many older rock bands that still sound pretty good. When they jammed in Cabo with their band they sounded great but not so much covering these VH songs. Besides my son and I really wanted to goto their concert nearby but couldn’t make it bc of a previous commitment. Now we don’t feel so bad missing the concert.
The same thing as zakk doing dime just doesn't feel right. There are a lot better eddie players out there. I don't think eddie would go to the show either.
Sammy shouts the years for the Hagar era songs incorrectly pretty much every time. Just ignore it. Although technically the LRHRN version of it came out in 93.
Amazing how Sammy is 76 now and still hitting most of those high notes. Every town he plays in he denotes all the money he makes off of his concerts and did it when he was in Van Halen since he makes millions with his businesses. 😊
That's a lie, Sammy said he only donates 5-10% of his takings. Sometimes he only donates 10-15K depending on the money made buy the show. He even says he has never ever donated 100% of his pay cheque. He explained that in an interview just a few weeks ago. Why make up lies? Big noting yourself? Trying to look important knowing something noone else does by making up a lie? Seriously just be honest and answer why you lied. If I ask for proof, you will have a million excuses about why the proof is gone. Just like everyone else does. Why lie?
But the money is going to his business, which will reap a tax break from it, so it's not like he's taking money out of his own pocket. And no, he's not hitting all the notes.
Takes courage to do what these guys r doing. I understand Alex and his decision in my opinion he’s one of the best there ever was. I applaud him. Great drummer. Joey Kramer. Aerosmith.
All of the phone recording makes for a dead looking crowd. FYI, Folks: the Artist(s) give a crappy performance when they feel they're not connecting with the audience.
