That was an incredible approach I was shocked with how high the minimums were, when I realised you were perpendicular to the runway, and you did a 270 degree turn over the terrain. It felt almost like the Kai Tak approach. And then hand flying it down from 10,000' was really nice to see. I need to try it in a simulator.
The Samos controller is one of the kindest and helpful controllers I have ever heard on frequency beside the fact that he seems to always be in a good mood! I can remeber hearing him in the past summer seasons as well, it's his own little airport! :DD. Perfect hand flying captain, thank you for this videos that not only help people to overcome their fear of flying but they also help people that are aviation enthusiasts and fly the a320 in a home simulator to perfect their operations! Greetings from Romania and still waiting for the LROP video haha!
Thank you very much for watching and for sharing your detailed feedback! I agree, ATC at Samos airport is very friendly, helpful and professional. Have a nice day!
From 17.10 in the video everything seems to happen so quickly in terms of flying the aircraft to touch down. It was very evident how the Pilot Flying and Pilot Monitoring really worked effectively as a team for a safe and successful landing. Thank you for another enjoyable video.
Thanks for watching and your great feedback! This approach is very special. But there is always enough room between the airplane and the ground. Have a nice day!
Hello Cpt. A very long visual approach to the 09 in Samos. 👍 Flowed beautifully. Another well-made and informative video from the cockpit. 🏆 What I really liked was the goodbye to the passengers at the beginning and the nice walk around from the plane at the end. Of course also the photos of the cabin crew. 👌 Thank you for always taking the time to provide us with such great videos. 😀 With that in mind, I wish you and your crew a nice week. Greetings from Styria 🤗 Werner
Werner, many thanks for your friendly words and the helpful feedback! I will try to include some outside views, the passenger announcement or even a view into the cabin whenever possible. It will not be possible in every future video. It is like the MCDU screens. Sometimes it is possible to include some shots, sometimes not. Best wishes to Styria
Thanks for another great video Captain! I must say, I am consistently very impressed by your communication with the various FOs you fly with. You give them plenty of opportunity to discuss decisions and you maintain a very open disposition. It is fantastic to witness! If only more workplaces had this level of communication 😅
thank you for the wonderful video. i just like the calmness and composure of the captain, including the exciting briefing. The approach is also insanely exciting, will surely fly it myself in the simulator, now that i finally have the appropriate utensils. Thank you for these videos and awakening the passion for flying (although only in the simulator), but it's just fun :)
Good day Sir, I imagine that you are always pleased to be given this destination, it is so beautiful and unique. Thank you for yet another great video.
Thanks for watching, for your good feedback and for being a supporting member of the channel! This is very important to keep the channel running! I love to fly to Samos! Sometimes I am scheduled several times a month to Samos,
Good morning Captain :) . It's so nice to see more videos of landings in Greece , i am so happy that you make more videos in my country :) . It felt a bit odd seeing that the ATC wasn't replying to you on 5:15 . I would be really nervous personally if i was seeing that ATC was not replying or that they were not giving me further instructions about something ... I can't wait to see more videos in Greece . I wish you safe flights and maybe one day if i can afford to travel by plane cause all the prices have skyrocketed i will be so happy to see you on board :). By the way that was a lovely communication with the Samos controller , he even informed about caution due to sailing boats , sounded like he was very helpful
Thanks for watching and your good feedback! Sometimes it takes a moment until ATC answers a call. That does not matter because we are in radar contact anyhow and also we see the other airplanes on our navigation display. This is nothing to worry about. The Samos controller is always very friendly and professional. It is amazing to see how he manages all the traffic safely in and out his little airport.
Ahhh ...the famous greenhouse approach! I wonder if the guy who owns the glass house decides to move his business, the entire aviation industry will be looking for new approach charts 😁 Nice flying Captain, perfect landing!
Great video as usual, It's not a normal Saturday without your videos :) I like how you give full information to the passengers about which Runway are you going to land with all the other details. Samos, it's always a great airport with a nice approach. Thank you
Awesome video as ever. I knew I'd seen a previous video of yours into Samos, but couldn't quite remember it until that final controller came on and then I knew where you were!! Such a beautiful approach, it's great to see it again :)
Flying to Samos is challenging but not a problem for an experienced pilot. Before flying to Samos as Captain a simulator training and an introduction flight is required. In addition, the Samos qualified pilots fly to Samos on a regular basis to stay proficient.
You are great, captain! I really enjoy your videos. I am a huge aviation fan and play computer simulations with the fenix a320 aircraft. You are very inspiring! Keep it up!
Another fantastic video! Curious to see if you've got your hands on one of the new/ex lufty 321's yet? Looking forward to a video with that change of dynamic!
Thanks for watching and your good feedback! Until now, I did not fly the mentioned A321s. But I am sure that this will happen sometime. And I will try to produce a video. Please stay tuned.
Dear Capt, sad to hear about the copyright infringement, and thanks for the update on your Channel page. Waiting for your next one, all the best from SIN/WSSS!
Thanks for the great feedback! I would love to fly you. But my personal flights between Hamburg and Stuttgart are very rare. Usually those flights are done by crews based in Hamburg or Stuttgart.
Just always say once captain is always be a captain.....nice approach .... want to fly with you someday.....❤❤❤salute captain sir✈️👨🏻✈️🕉🙏🏻👨🏻✈️👨🏻✈️👨🏻✈️👨🏻✈️🇮🇳✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️
Incredible approach with a lot of "manual" work, here!! Compliments for the management of the landing phase. According to your videos, Samos is a challenging airport both for landing and take-off. I think I'll never go there, I prefer airports with ILS and loooooong and straight finals! Greetings from Verona!
Thanks for watching and your good and detailed feedback! Sure, Samos has no ILS due to the obstacles. There are lots of airports without ILS for different reasons. But it is not unsafe to fly to airports without ILS. It may be a little more challenging, like the approach to Samos. But we are trained for that. Berfore we fly to Samos the first time, we have to do a special simulator training. Also we have to fly on a regular basis to the airport. Greetings to Verona!
Hi Captain! First of all thank you for your great Videos all the time on this channel :) This is so informative and gives us a better view of all the things real airline pilots do at work 😎 I am dreaming of becoming an airline pilot at the lufthansa group... If you have some time i would like to ask you here in the comments how you had become such a nice pilot? Thanks and have a nice day!
Thanks for your friendly words! It's good that you are dreaming of becoming a Lufthansa group pilot! Airline pilots are usually people who are able to work good together in a team. Also, the basic flying skills and the situational awareness should be on a good level. This and some more is tested during the application process for the airlines. Lot's of the things can be trained in the flight school. But not everything.
The Samos Tower ATC was rather enthusiastic, like he really, really, enjoys his job 😁👍 Do you always have to request ATIS info over the radio at Samos, isn't it automated like other airports? 🤔* * got the answer at the end of the video 🤦♂️
I agree, Samos ATC is wonderful! They are very friendly and professional! It is a pleasure to see how they handle all the traffic at the little airport! Due to the mountains, we usually do not receive the ATIS via the radio until we are in close proximity to the airport.
Thanks for watching and your good feedback! I do not know if it is just one controller or if the controllers sound very similar. But ATC at Samos airport is great! They are very friendly and professional and do a wonderful job in managing lots of traffic at the very little airport.
Stunning approach, like always! As a captain, are you allowed to fly to any CAT C airport or is special training required for each of them before flying? Also, is there a minimum and maximum of how many CAT C airport flights you have to fly in a certain period (e.g 1 month)? Thank you for taking us into the cockpit!
Thanks for watching and your question. Samos requires Simulator training and an introduction flight. In addition, regular flights have to be done to the CAT-C airports to stay current and proficient. There is no maximum for CAT-C airports. Scheduling may schedule you every day to a CAT-C airport. If you would fly to too many CAT-C airports scheduling may have problems because you cannot fly to 2 different airports in parallel.
This became almost a bit exciting when there was 3 reds on the papi lights on short final and a red 400 on the altimeter over the glass house🙂. Thanks for a great video, it sure makes me want to go to Greece again (Crete is my favorite). Btw, why is specifically 70 knots significant when decelerating after touchdown?
Thanks for watching and your good feedback! 400 feet over the glass house is exactly like the approach on the published chart for the visual turn. The 3 red are shown because 400 over the glass house is 3 degrees to the runway and the PAPI is calibrated to 3.5 degrees. The 70 knots call is a standard Airbus callout because at 70 knots the reversers should be latest moved from full reverse to idle reverse unless you are in an emergency situation.
Thanks for watching and your good feedback! No, we do not have to switch off the GPWS. During the visual approach, we stay away from the high obstacles.
Nice Video and beautiful app! It is possible that the Samos app. was the same as in one of your other Videos because I heard the voice of the app in one of your videos in the past... (or they sound all the same there :) )
Thanks for the good feedback! This is a brand new approach video, produced from recordings of a recent flight. But you are right: The voices from ATC sound always very similar. Even my voice is the same and the callsign of the flight is the same.
I can only show a go around if we have to fly a go around. It can happen during any approach because of a blocked runway, windshears or other things which require to discontinue the approach. But in general, go arounds are very rare. It may take months or even more than that until a go around happens during an approach with the cameras running.
Good question! A visual approach shortens the flight distance, reduces the flight time, reduces emissions and saves fuel. Also it's much more fun than flying an instrument approach.
Thanks! And to your last point: must be like back to the basics to handfly a visual approach 😁 Somehow it looks like flying a single engine prop VFR in a traffic pattern. Very cool, didn‘t know that it is done in a similar way in an airliner even though you are still in IFR (and of course VMC)
Thanks for your feedback! Which screen would you like to see? There are already the primary flight display and the navigation display shown in the video. The autopilot is activated via the FCU. All inputs to the FCU are visible on the primary flight display. The modes for the flight director and the autopilot are shown on the FMA, which is the upper part of the PFD. It even shows which autopilot is on. Most flying in the video was done with autopilot and flightdirector off. This is the reason for an almost blank FMA indication.
Hello Captain - Beautiful sidestick work on this challenging approach. Curious to hear how you like the IAE engines vs CFMs? Happy and safe contrails to you and the crew - Kam
Thanks for watching and the good feedback! I like most the engines of the Airbus NEO. They are very efficient and have a much better performance than the CEO engines.
