The best charge from a perspective of quality of power is the Baseus 100W multiport or the Hypthen-X 100W multiport. These are both fairly large adapters though. Googles own 30W charger isn't the worst option, the Anker Nano II series, Belkin Boost up 30W... there's a lot of mid-range devices that should do the job.

Thank you for the informative review. I just purchased this adapter for travel. Bottom line; what adverse effects could result if I use this to pass-through charge my laptop (45W draw) via my USB C hub (15W draw)?
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 2 года назад
If the USB C Hub is made to do that I would say no problem. I know it gets a little confusing since the Hub has to also supply USB PD3.0 to the laptop as well as request it from the charger.
@tahnjr
@tahnjr 2 года назад
@@AllThingsOnePlace Yes, it *should*... On paper everything looks fine. But as a CS Engineer working in the Telecom Industry, I'm concerned about real-world results 😉 The laptop (Dell XPS) uses TB3 ports, and the hub specs are rated for 100W pass-through. So in theory, they're supposed to play well together.
@AlejandroLZuvic
@AlejandroLZuvic 2 года назад
It should work just fine. Even if the laptop originally comes with a bigger charger (let's say 61 or 67 like the Macbook Pro), the computer would still charge but slower. Sometimes, I charge my Macbook Pro (the included charger is rated for 67 watts) with a Samsung 25 watts and the laptop charges perfectly, the information provided by the System Report shows "charging at 25 watts" and all it's fine. Now, of course I can do that because I know my Macbook uses around 15-20 watts when browsing or watching movies, if the computer was rendering a video or compiling stuff the power usage would be around 45-50 watts and the 25watts charger wouldn't be enough.
@tahnjr
@tahnjr 2 года назад
@@AlejandroLZuvic I have an older Dell XPS 13 inch laptop; I'll be using it with a new USB C 3.2 gen 2 hub. Many USB hub manufacturers specifically indicate they are not compatible with Dell XPS 13 inch laptops. This due to the fact that these older laptops come with a notoriously anemic 45W charger. "On paper", my laptop draws 45W to charge. So, from my engineering background, it's recommended to use a >= 65W charger when supporting a passthru hub drawing a max of 15W.

Subscribed. Thank you! After watching all of your videos I purchased this Trio on closeout for $17, the Baseus 100 watt 4 port snake on promo $34 and the Lenovo Legion 95 watt PD 3.0 , compact brick grade 6, GX20Z46240 on promo from Lenovo for even less. Current devices are a quad HD Chromebook always home on mains, Galaxy S10's, power banks, cameras. Not a mobile power user. Priorities are safety, durability, and least battery wear in that order especially for the C.B. as I can't limit C.B. charge to less than 100% without constantly cycling ac power. Is power quality between these power supplies at low power use a real concern for the C.B. continuously connected? Safety wise the Lenovo gives me the highest confidence for falling asleep next to the thing and for shielding. Baseus not so much and its power cord sucks taking up more packing space than Lenovo if I do travel. I've been charging the S10's and the rest on Belkin's 27 watt QC 4+ for years, fast with no heating. I'm assuming that it will also yield close to a 25 watt charge on an S22-23 when I upgrade. Correct? Finally the Samsung Trio appears to only have AFC on the A port. Will the S10 get precise charging similar to QC4+ on Trio's C port? Grateful for whatever insight you may have.
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for the detailed comment! As you add up more devices the idle power can be a concern depending on the state of things, there is so much variability. Like, my apple cables keep my charger idling at 1W, even with nothing plugged in on the device side. In terms of least battery wear you pretty much have to rely on apps to control the charging speed. I'd chose the lowest speed available if you don't need the faster charging option, I just let the phone manage it, using the fastest charging option most of the time, then sometimes it says waiting to finish charging... But yes, the Belkin should be good on the newer Samsung devices. The Samsung charger does have the extra mode on the USB A port. I don't have a device to actually that mode though. The USB C ports will deliver the 25W PPS modes the newer Samsung devices can use.
@mmesmer6447
@mmesmer6447 7 месяцев назад
@@AllThingsOnePlace Thank you for the reply. Considering only the health of the Chromebook's m.b. connected 24/7 is the Samsung or the Lenovo kinder? I ask because I have lost 2 m.b.'s on C.B.'s using power banks. These are high end QHD models calling for USB C-PD 3.0. Incidentally C.B. users often complain about the lack of durability for both the stock bricks and their similar replacements. Even 45 w Chicony and Liteon don't hold up as they once did.

If you are talking about a Xiaomi charger that uses USB A port then that is a proprietary charger only good for their devices or maybe OPPO and Huawei since I've seen them use high wattage chargers with USB A ports. It's proprietary adaptation of the Qualcomm Quick Charge version and it's not a good charger to use with modern devices that have Power Delivery 2.0 or 3.0. it's better to get a certified PD charger.
@_random.user_
@_random.user_ 6 дней назад
I recently received the charger with the S24 as a pre-order deal, and it's getting extremely hot even though I'm only using 33 watts to charge two devices, with a maximum of 70 watts being the peak output the devices use, which is hardly ever reached. As your video indicates, it's not very efficient. However, I don't fully understand the metrics you use yet. Would you consider it normal for the charger to reach temperatures of 50 to 60 degrees Celsius (122-140 degrees Fahrenheit) after just 20 minutes or less of use, given its efficiency and heat dissipation. Samsung’s staff doesn't really know any of the details and just sent me a replacement. However, I'm uncertain whether I should use the new one or sell it and purchase another charger, considering the excessive heat and faster wear down and eventually breaking. Also, does any of your videos explain the metrics?

Yeah, I'd probably push to something like a 100 watt four port adapter. So, you get 30 watts for the tablet, 30 watts for the phone, and 5 watts or so for the earpods, and a few extra watts of headroom so the power adapter doesn't turn into a portable furnace.

I never thought I'd see the day, when Samsung used their brand to sell a product that was substandard. Apple is starting to go that rout too, like doing stupid things like have non-detachable power cords for monitors for example. See, this is why we love your channel, you bring us the fact, pure evidence, no BS. I would never buy that power adapter, no ever! Thanks for shedding light on this one. Baseus is still top of the stack, rightfully so.
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 2 года назад
Thanks, yeah, I don't see many people, I'm sure there's other nano channels I've never heard of, that fully characterize the device. Also, device regulations (DOE VI, CEC IV, NRCAN, EU 2019/1782, AS/NZS 4665) are written so all that matters is idle power consumption and efficiency at 25, 50, 75, and 100% load. All other parameters are not considered so manufactures aren't going to produce adapters to make other parameter improvements. As it is many companies and organizations are actively against even the current regulations saying it will destroy innovation (www.energy.gov/sites/prod/files/2014/02/f7/eps_ecs_final_rule.pdf). Another trouble area is the new all in one chips from manufacturers (mostly GaN) devices don't have integrated power factor correction options so that's going to be rare as hen's teeth on the next generation devices. Okay, rant done!

It's okay for the battery. It is just a little less efficient than it claims. The metrics are AC power consumption mostly. The main issue here on battery side is that charging a 15 Wh battery at 30 or 40 watts is a bit aggressive which could lead to somewhat shorter battery life. This isn't any different than any other charger (PPS 45W capable) would treat the battery though. Samsung has built this feature in and I am sure tested it is safe and the phone will not have a significantly shorter life with this brick.

Samsung only says it works with the Galaxy fast charger and doesn't list any specifications of what that is, what protocol it supports, or any other information at all. It doesn't even say what port it charges with. I'd have to assume this charger would work fine with the Samsung eco system being a Samsung charger but it is a guess.

I reckon if you gave it 240 volts like most if the world has that it would perform better. The US market is probs an after thought for this
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
Power adapters do behave a little differently on 240 versus 120. The power factor actually gets worse whether it has PFC or not on higher voltage. The efficiency is typically a little higher though since the current is lower as the voltage goes higher. For typical power adapters this is less than 1% different. Also the idle power consumption is worse on higher voltage, tradeoffs. Of course no mention of power factor or THD on the development sheet. www.power.com/design-support/design-examples/rdr-848-42-w-dual-port-isolated-flyback-power-supply-30-w-usb-pd-3-and-12-w-usb-port-using-innoswitch3-pro-powigan

It is a little low per the USB specification but the cable is likely the reason for that. You will lose a few tenths of a volt in a normal USB C cable. If the device charges still then it isn't a problem.

I believe this charger can only charge Samsung phones at 35W - they're rated for 10V 4.5A, and this charger can only do 3.5A at 10V.
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 2 года назад
Yeah, each device is different a little. In terms of Samsung's phones as far as I can see (research, internet, limited value) the difference between 25W and 45W is negligible anyway. So, technically, this device can top out two phones at once in the "25" watt mode. I assume tablets, laptops (Chromebooks), take advantage of the higher voltages and therefore can actually use the higher power rating of the 45W plus power ports. It mostly relies on the device and the devices management of what the power adapter can supply. If 10V is the max input on the particular device then yes this charger will top out at 35W charging rate (for a short period of time).
@tahnjr
@tahnjr 2 года назад
Since this charger also supports PPS power delivery, it *can* supply up to a full 65W of power. Within the Galaxy S22 phone series, the S22 Ultra & S22+ will draw up to 45W when the battery level is between 0 to 50% charged; whereas the S22 will draw a maximum of 25W. Once the battery level reaches 50%, there is there is negligible difference between a 15W~100W PD/PPS charger.

Hello, I just bought Samsung S24 ultra and I'm very confused about which charger and cable should I get for the phone to keep the battery life efficient as well as charging fast. Can you suggest?
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 5 месяцев назад
The cable is the easy bit, any 100w plus usb c to c charging cable should work. A lot are called 240w now, or 5 amp, or e marked are some other key terms. In terms of charger, anything with a PPS mode of 5 amps will max out charge speed, you can always do 25w with a 30w charger though, also requires PPS or programmable power supply. For battery life 25w may be better anyway. Not a whole lot of science behind that though.

It is perfectly okay to use a higher wattage charger with a lower wattage device; with USB the device negotiates for the power. The power adapter doesn't force 65W in. This should have negligible changes to battery performance over time. All batteries get worse over time.

@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
The iPhone decides how fast to charge, so it won't go faster than what it can handle. Damage to the battery is complicated, technically every time you charge and discharge you do a small amount of damage to the battery. The hotter the battery is (extreme) or colder the battery is (also extreme) the more damage can occur. Charging as fast as possible all the time may shorten the overall life of the battery a little more but on modern devices with advanced charge controllers this is not as much of an issue as older devices.

The home power supply (your wall outlet) can handle these but it is a little extra work to deliver the peak, short non-linear duration current, to devices like this when they are charging devices. At 65 watts and with the bulk of this adapter I expected a much better power supply and got the same cheap power supply you get in a $20 power brick. Not that others don't do this. This 65W category is riddled with not so great adapters... That being said, it will cost a bit more to operate, as energy costs go up a bit more is a bit more than a bit more... It isn't unsafe, unless you try to connect a bunch of them which kind of speaks for itself.

@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 2 года назад
Yes, I agree. Samsung has a long history of power adapters and even the oldest ones I have do still work. I worry about some of these newer brands versus something like Belkin, Apple, Anker, Samsung... Google even. I think there is a trend for a larger producer to go with a proven known older technology versus bleeding edge it might break after a year but it's a lot better for that year tech. Power quality is confusing I think and my videos focus on that a lot since you pay for poor quality in one way or another but thanks to cheap electric rates its dollars per year for one 65W power adapter if you aren't an industrial customer. I am trying to do less of that now and more about the adapter or the company reputation. The power quality is a way to compare performance when it is working at minimum. I was too mean on this one, disappointed at the time, I though this would be the one. It does deserve a bit better reputationally.
@coolcat1813

@@AllThingsOnePlace I totally agree with your remarks! My biggest concern with power supplies is first and foremost the build quality, in terms of the circuit design, used components, safety features, compliance with standards, reliability. Therefor I rather prefer established brands with a certain standing and reputation, since this is often the only tangible benchmark for consumers. I do not want to take risks that might lead to a potential failure of my (expensive) end devices.
