i Own both these drives for Several years ( Both are 2tb / Game Libraries ) Purchased a week apart @ Micro center, the Samsung was $55.- more Premium butt i wanted to see if it was Worth it 🤔 both Came with Cloning software, Similar but Samsung seems a bit better. if anyone is Searching for a decent 2.5" Solid state drive i highly recommend the Crucial Mx500 2tb ssd for $185.- Compared to Samsung 860 Evo 2tb $250.- as of posting this Comment ( 10/10/20 ) when i Checked Prices. Side Note : need a Great M.2 with Samsung Performance for less : Xpg Sx8200 pro Adata 2tb Mvne M.2 ssd 🏆

Very informative. Other videos talk around the "large data transfers slow the drive" while you explained it clearly being the ~20GB controller cache. Makes sense now. It's not a drive malfunction, it's just the way SSDs deal with the pros/cons of SLC vs. TLC.

My eight year old Toshiba laptop has an M430 i5 which is a pretty good i5 but it was still slow booting up and opening applications. Yesterday I put a 500GB 860 Evo in and the improvement in boot speed and opening applications is remarkable. You are the first person in the world to actually say that cloning an OS drive to an SSD drive probably won't work!!! I subscribed immediately. I recently had this exact experience with the MX500. Tried 3 different cloning programs, different ways, and even bought an off-line hardware cloner: all failed. The information that Samsung's cloning software is the most reliable, is good to know AND WILL HELP ME DECIDE WHICH SSD TO BUY because of it. If I ever need to clone a drive with my OS and programs on it, it WILL be a Samsung.

Great information. Learned a couple of things here. One note -- regarding real world usage, I've seen a number of videos which have shown that there's very little difference even between SATA SSDs and NVMe drives, in terms of what you actually notice. Big difference between spinning hard drives and SSDs, but little difference between SSD variations.

I still have the original HD with the OEM Win10 install for backup, in case the SSD crashes itself, though I'm confident the MX500 will hold up in the long haul.

I recently was making comparisons between SSDs. After a couple days of research, I narrowed it down to a $399.99 WD blue 2TB, a $419.99 MX 500 2TB, and a $450 Samsung 860 EVO 2TB. After comparing cost, benchmarks, and brand history, I settled on the MX500. Between the WD and MX500 there is enough of a performance difference and more brand history for Crucial that the MX500 made sense even if it was $20 more. Between the MX500 and 860 EVO it's constant stream of traded blows, so the $30 premium for the Samsung drive just doesn't make sense. I am a hardcore Samsung SSD fan, but I already have an 850 PRO for my OS drive, and the technology for SSDs has come such a long way in the past five years that deciding on Crucial was a no brainer. I will always recommend Samsung if cost is no object, but if you want the best value you can get for what is still insanely close to top tier SATA III performance, the MX500 is the one to get. Now, if all you want is the SSD experience and you don't want to buy a sketchy second rate SSD, the WD blue line is the best bang for your buck.

@@arthurwintersight7868 50 USD for 1tb Samsung Evo 870, today. This is cheap. I wish they could come up with faster small file or 4k RANDOM read /write speeds. People repeat the mantra about SATA SSD's having reached their potential due to SATA interface limitations, ...but there is still room for improvement in random read speeds vs sequential. I would love to buy in 2024 a SATA SSD with a 100 mb/s 4K random read speed vs only 40-ish mb/s for the Evo 870. It would make for a much snappier experience.

There's an exception to the rule of buying the cheapest. If it's for a laptop, idle power consumption will probably make a noticeable difference in battery time. For that you only need to check the charts on a site that benchmarks for that. The MX300 does pretty well there. A couple SSDs do better. Some will probably leave the owner furious wondering why their battery drains so fast. Those tuned for performance ignore tuning for idle power consumption because of the delay {unnoticeable for most uses} to wake up from the deeper sleep states. Just something to keep in mind for people looking to upgrade their portable device.

Brunette or an SSD? Nice thumbnail and an evenly attractive no-nonsense presentation in the comparison. You treat your viewers so honestly and spare no information like we know you personally, which is, needless to say, a nice feeling.

Thanks. But, as with many products, the question is how will these drives behave after a year of active use? Will they all still have the same performance or will some of them slow down? Remember the old Evo 840 slowdown bug... And now we have also Western Digital Blue 500GB.

I know this is a 2 year old video, though funnily enough I am still rocking my M.2 850 512gb evo and mx300 750gb from 2016. Things still feel real snappy on them, especially with the former as my boot drive!

Wow, you're quite the educated reviewer! Me, just a regular guy. But even though so much of what you were sharing was over my head, you succinctly gave me the "pearls" I was looking for--in a friendly manner no less. I also very much appreciate the respect you have for your viewers by NOT WASTING OUR TIME with the some of the outlandish kind of narcissism that's so prevalent on RU-vid. Most videos I watch could generally be done in about a 1/3 of the time or less. Every minute of your review was "packed" and useful. - Great details, great perspectives, great review!

Here in December 2018 I purchased a brand new Crucial MX500 for $64 from NewEgg.. An awesome price for a drive that was easy to install and it revived my old T430 and gave it new life.

I had the same dilemma back in Dec '18 when I was on a short business trip to Vietnam. Went into a computer store and saw both of these drives. The Evo was on sale at about US$65 and the MX500 was at normal price of US$60. I didn't have access to internet to do any research then and decided to buy the Evo. I later told a Vietnamese friend of my purchase and he warned me that there are many fake Evos in their market and mine could be a fake with that price. I thought I wasted US$65! When I got home, I used Samsung cloning program to check the drive (the cloning program has a genuine checker and would not run if the SSD isn't genuine). I was relieved that it's a genuine Evo and the Samsung cloning tool was fantastic. It's so easy to use ,compared to many other cloning programs (both paid, freemium or open sourced). The Evo is still running today as main boot/OS drive, mounted in a CD/DVD caddy in a notebook. I mounted it in the CD/DVD drive as my notebook is a nightmare to open. I always break something (e.g. screw mount, clip locks, etc.) or dislodge connections (e.g. keyboard, power supply) whenever I opened the case due to its horrible design. No regrets in picking up the Evo.

You, sir, are by FAR the most thorough, detail-oriented reviewer I have ever witnessed! Thank you for providing such in-depth comparison and analysis of these drives, and for providing so much background technical information regarding this technology. I can't wait to see more of you reviews!

Thanks for this informative video. These drives are same price now, both on sale for Black Friday ($115AUD). The review helped a lot - but since they're basically equal in performance, my decision came down to past experience. As a system builder, I had countless problems with Crucial Ballistix DDR2 many years ago. Crucial was great about quickly replacing the faulty modules, but each replacement also only lasted a few months - some wouldn't boot from the start. Eventually we absorbed the loss and replaced them with another brand. I've never used Samsung RAM but I've had many Samsung HDDs that worked throughout their warranty period - after which a few died but the vast majority are still working a decade later. So I went with the Samsung Evo 860 500GB - and fingers crossed. :)

I would like to point out that Serial ATA is NOT controller Serial ATA can be Host Bus Adapter, but NOT controller controller is on HDD or on SSD and NOT on Main Logic Board nor within chipset last time you could have had controller was at the time of ST-xxx ATA have removed controller from computer and moved it directly to the drive making whole design simpler and cleaner please do not use controller to describe HBAs as this is very very different thing HBA is just an interface and in fact if it comes to ATA there is almost NO LOGIC between ISA/PCI and ATA - it connects directly or almost directly (with buffers) Serial ATA is close to same thing - connects almost directly from PCIe to SATA, you get same architecture - same decoupling capacitors (on SATA HDD/SSD both TX and RX lines have decoupling capacitors; on PCIe card only one side is PCIe card, other side is on Main Logic Board) Basically you can run both SATA (or SAS) and PCIe for as far as you wish - all you need it a transformer for each data line pair and decoupling capacitors, you may even boost voltage, if you wish, as long as you will bring it back to required level on both ends.

If you want 'performance' And can afford it.... Samsung. Otherwise, for the 'average' user who's looking for performance while watching one's budget... Crucial. The price difference is relatively small but Samsung obviously costs more considering the brand name. The Crucial 1TB SSD was currently listed ~$200 while the Samsung version was slightly higher in many places. Managed to get the Crucial MX500 1Tb SSD for ~$180 excl tax which was relatively affordable considering that SSD prices are Still relatively Expensive! Note that Crucial LIES on its boxes that the software Is included when it's Not! The buyer must go to Crucial's website to be redirected to download the Acronis software. Also, you'll need to buy an adapter Separately for the data transfer! Acronis cloning for Crucial stunk as I had issues with the software. EaseUs or Macrium has decent Free versions of their drive cloning software. Samsung software, based on many reviews, is ONLY good for Samsung SSDs. A 1Tb SSD 'should' last more than 3-5 years which is more than enough time for the average computer user as that's about the time to upgrade to a newer PC/laptop. For laptop users, if you're laptop has a 2d drive slot, use the HDD as a file drive so the SDD life would be extended as the SDD is used only to store the OS and other various software. Same basis goes for PC users.
