In this video ill show you how to modify a Samsung galaxy phone to use an external battery and use the phone up to 3 times longer before recharging.
The phone uses a 3d printed hard case to replace the back panel. allowing the phone electronics to be modified.
The phone camera can still be used but you lose the wireless charging option.
The phone (with additional battery) can be charged over the original charging port.
This project is very interesting if you use an older phone for high energy demanding application like gaming.

In my case the stock battery is 5000mah capacity. This is registered in the phone kernel. The phone doesnt measure battery voltage to calculate the battery levels. It measures the amount of energy used from the battery. With a bigger battery the actual capacity is different then the stock battery. In my case de battery is 15.000 mah. When my phone is fully charged it shows 100% in the battery indicator in the top right of the screen. When the 5000mah is used(what the phone thinks is the battery capacity) The battery % indicator will drop to 1%. But in fact the battery has A LOT more energy in it now. Thats why the phone doesnt turn off and keeps working. This is why the actual battery voltage is more important then the calculated % The widget app (linked in the comments) is a freeware and clean widget to show the actual battery voltage on your phone. A fully charged battery reads 4.3v. An empty battery reads 3.4v So even if your phone battery indicator shows 1% But your voltage is arround 3.9v you know the battery has about 50% real charge left.

So in this case if you reacharge using your phone's charger when it gets 5000mah I it thinks it's fully charged while the battery is I not fully charged

@@SONYSony-em8dt true. Same goes with usage. When the phone used 5000mah is shows 1% and stays that way until the battery is really empty. Thats why we need an option to change the kernel to the new capacity.

@@RobbertDIYprojects There is a video of a phone moded into gaming phone although he doesn't show how he changes the internal settings to equal the battery amps he mentions that let us know that in the future if you ever found out. Interesting, I thought the phone use voltage as battery level indicator. So if the battery degrade and has 50% health, the phone will 1.stop charging at 50% or 2.shutdown at 50% ???

You're supposed to modify /sys/class/power_supply/bms/charge_full to accommodate the new capacity Using root access of course. I'm looking for a magisk module that would do this properly, but it seems you guys just plug your batteries and forget about them...

Definitely not forget about them. This mod works. Use it for about a year now. The only issue is the battery indicator. This is at 1% after a few hours of use. The phone keeps working until the battery is really empty. But yes I've still looking for an option to change the capacity in the kernel. If you know a proper way to change this value just give me a sign. I can make an additional video on how to mod this. :D

I will try to make a screenshot of power levels graph from fully charged to fully drained. Including the shows battery % This way you see the battery drops to 1% but stays on for 3 times the duration.

Just curious 2600mAh cell its real capacity or just a number. Can you verify that with Zhiyu battery checker or liitokala battery checker. I had doubt using old battery from the Old phone cuz this capacity it has.

The battery has (at least) 2600mah capacity when it was new. When batteries age the capacity goes down a little. That why older phones need to be recharged faster. In my case I used 4 older batteries. Havent tested there capacity before I used them. But its up to you if you want to use onder battery with a bit less capacity as stated on the cell. Or brand New cells that definitly have the stated capacity.

Usually I check the real battery capacity with ah b6ac charger. Those work really well in Lithium cells. These chargers can drain a battery and then fully charge to see the real capacity. I use old phone battery a lot in home build projects.

Often i extract the cells from old phones given by relatives and friends. If a cell seems in good condition I test the capacity to be sure the cell is in good condition. Sometimes old phones that have been in a drawer for a few years have a totally drained battery. Well below 3v. Those I toss away without even trying. Most of them are damaged by discharging to far. The capacity gets very low. And they are not able to provide a high current anymore. Voltage drops when adding a load. Same goes for 18650 cells. I often extract them from old e-bikes.

@@RobbertDIYprojects so have you tried checking the real capacity on those old phone battery With b6ac charger? How's the number. Because with the parallel configuration we can't have one low Ah cuz it's becoming the benchmark for the other battery.

Not the ones in the video, but I can check on other phone batteries I have. What you commented was not fully true. You can combine different capacity batteries parallel. 2000+1500mah is the same as a single 3500mah cell The capacity is only important when you put them in series. The smallest battery is your weakest link in a series. This one will be empty first. A BMS will cut the power to the rest of the back. In a situation like the Samsung phone mod. All cells are in parallel and work as a single cell. Example.8 I combine a 1000 and a 2000 mah cell. The combined capacity is 3000mah. Two combined cells always have the same voltage. When you draw 3mA, 1ma will come from the 1000mah cell and 2mA comes from the 2000mah.

We still face the same issue. But the battery will charge fine to full charge. Battery will drop to 1% when it used the stock capacity. But remains on for the remaining battery life

Hey I wanted to ask how did you manage to connect batteries of different mah together? I also tried this but with a 10000 mah cell but it shuts down because it isn't getting enough current. Since you had done it I'd like to know if you'd think its possible to connect the current 10000 mah battery to the original 3100 mah battery?

Combining different mah batteries is no problem. All lipo cells are 3.7v Combining them parallelle makes them act as a single cell. A 100mah and 300mah cell combines acts like a single 400mah cell. The natural flow of electricity will draw 1/4 of the small cell, 3/4 of the big cell. So yes of you have a 10000mah cell you can connect it to the 3500mah cell to create a 13500mah cell. Just always fully charge both cells before connecting. This way they are equal before connecting. When Connecting an empty and full battery. The electricity will rush from the full to the empty battery, way beyond the max charge rate and damage the cell.

Charging speed is the same as original with a fast charger. The only difference is the bigger capacity. If your extended battery is 3 times as much. Charging will take 3 times as long. In fact a bigger battery is capable off charging at at higher rate. Usually the charge rate is equal to the total capacity. In my case a 15.000mah battery can be charged at 15A charge rate. Charging the battery in one hour. But the phone charging system is designed for the stock battery and limits the charge rate to the (known) stock battery. This cant be changed easy. Usually a quickcharger charges a phone in one hour. 3x the capacity takes 3 hours to get a full charge.

Not needed. Just change the hardware will result in a lot more power. The phones counts down from 100 to 0% just like always since it counts the used energy, Not the actual remaining capacity. But the phone stays on at 1% for the remaining battery capacity. A voltage widget will give you a good indication about the true battery life.

Not at all. The 1% is only a system indication that it has used the 5000mah capacity the stock system knows it has. When it drops to 5% the displays automatically dimms to safe energy. But you can turn the brightness back up and continue as usual haha. System won't drop performance at 1%. Still trying to find a way to update the kernel and change to the new battery capacity so the battery indicator is spot on again.

Can you make one for laptop? laptop nowadays could have 99wh. If you buy 2 more it become 290wh😅. Should be more complicated cuz laptop battery have multiple cells compared to phone that only 1 cell

The same can be done with laptops. If you crack one open, you notice a few cells are placed in series. For instance 3 cells give you 11.1v. Often 2 or more cells are combined parallel. You need to add the same cells to each paralel stage. But its definitly possible. The original battery BMS is still compatible.

That's not true. The cells are connected to the stock battery BMS. They now act as a single cell (parallel) so it can store a lot more energy. so yes there is definitly a BMS to protect the cells. If you skip to 3:50 you can see the new cells are paralel to the stock cell. Between the phone and the cells is the original battery Bms.

May I know how? I have been searching for tutorials on how to edit the kernals for a long time now. I have gone through a lot of xda forums but still there's a lot of uncertainties and ways that might be outdated. One thing for sure is that custom kernals is needed.

Hi, i also did this mod, but i used pouch battery from power bank which is only rated for 4.2v, but the phone try to charge it to 4.5v which greatly shorten the life of the battery and it have lost half of the capacity within one year, is there a way to prevent it, I'm using acca app but the percentage may be messed up

No phones charge the cells to 4.5-4.6v Those batteries are designed the handle the higher voltage. That's why I use old phone batteries. Lipos like 18650 cant be used. That would be awesome and cheap. Over charging batteries that have a 4.2v max might even catch fire.

Also the battery percentage is always off. The phone doesnt know the battery has a way bigger capacity. Until this day I havent found a solution to change the capacity.

Its possible to power the phone with 18650 cells . But you may NOT use the phone to charge the phone. Example you hook up a big powerbank to the phone battery, use the powerbank charge port instead of the phone. The powerbank stops charging at 4.2v

@@RobbertDIYprojects some phones can re calibrate the battery capacity based on the voltage, the Asus ones I've modified 2 of them both worked well, I've also tried to modify OnePlus which did not work, it will shut down at assumed 0% and when you turn back on it'll continue to work for long time at 1%

@@RobbertDIYprojects what about to use acca app, that can control the max and min voltage, also can manually set the charging current if you used low C high capacity cell (and also to not heat up the phone if you like to charge and use at the same time), the downside is the phone cannot be charged when it's off because the app cannot run in bootloader yet

Still not find a perfect solution to change the real battery size in the kernel. For who likes. The widget gives you a good indication about how many charge is still left in the battery. I use this for a while now and am satisfied. The widget is free without adds or other crap.

Same here, use same mod as yours, 1% on 30% power left. But i use adb command dumpsys battery set level 50 to set battery percentage all time, prevent device to trigger low power/stamina mode, and you can drain way below 3,2 volt. I use experia 1 btw.

That's the fun in lipo batteries. With a bit of caution and good planning you can build anything out of them. While back I made a 20A battery pack out of old ebike cells to power my electric gokart haha

@lorenzogiovannone5036 swelling of the cells only happens with abuse. Short circuit, to fast charge of discharge. For charging, only charge at 0.5 to 1 c. For instance your pack is 2A your max charge rate is 1 to 2A Never go over 4.2v so use a good BMS Same goes for discharging. Different cells have different discharge rates. This can be fount in de cell specs. If you may draw 10A max. Don't draw more. All these things will be bad for the cell and makes it swell up. When you take care of the cell it will last for a long time.

This battery beast works even better then expected. I use 3 phones to do vlogs. Two of them are modded like this. Not the most pretty or compact solution. But can't drain them in a full day. How hard I might try. Pretty usefull when recording time-lapse videos without usb power available. 16-24 hours non stop use with display on.

Maybe it would be a good idea to create a project that has an extra battery like your video, but it is removable through a modified P2 connection. This way you can use it for high energy draining applications in the same way but if you want a more discreet use it is also possible.

@richardyson1142 true. The only issue is that older phones didn't have a great camera. In my case, I record everything in 4k. Swappable edditional energy storage can be an issue when mixing different battery charges. When the stock battery is at 3.2v and you hook up a fully charged battery at 4.2v. Energy will flow from the new cell to the stock cell at a way higher c rate then its designed for. Cells can get damaged or catch fire. Like in the video, I charge all cells to an equal voltage before combining them as a single battery. Equalizing the cells prevents the high energy flow when connected.

This mod has another issue. The stock battery tells the phone its 5000mah, while in fact the battery is 15000mah. An android phone calculates the battery usage. Sometimes the phone displays 0% while the battery is not even close to empty haha. The phone stays on like normal. So the battery level indicator is not the true battery level.

When the stock cell and the additional cells are connected both positive and negative terminals (parallel) they works like a single cell with a combined capacity of all cells.

Until this day, the battery charges to full capacity. But the battery level indicator is off. When the battery has drained 5000mah (like the stock battery) The phone displays 1% But the phone will stay on for the remaining 10,000mah (just showing 1%) Reading the battery voltage with a widget shows the real battery status. We still have to figure out how to mod the kernel to see the full capacity. I use this for live streaming about 16 hours a day. This morning, the battery dropped to 1% (indicating the stock capacity is drained) its now 22:20 where I live. And the phone is still running and not even close to empty. Haha
