whats the point might just as well use your phone or sat nav in the first place and save faffing about to be honest been thinking of getting one of these gizmos but the more I see them the more distant from actually buying one o get. Great video very informative thank you .
To make it work for standalone (without a connecting to a phone) with HERE app , you need to download the map locally to your s3 watch, turn Bluetooth off and turn Wifi (even though there is not wifi around you) and GPS on. Good luck!
Tried mine this am, it works fine walked down the garden 300m from all inputs and used the quick gps app. After about 60secs it came up with all details, +/- 4m, so it does work and quickly, as with most devices it's probably down to your local, I'm in central France and our mobile signal is very iffy.
@Mr Analytical yes, because u can't use common application u have on ur phone through ur watch, instead with AWear u can do it (for istance, Google Keep). Moreover the sliding ring (i don't know how it's said in english) is a really uncomfortable because your coat or shirt can rotate it running application alone.
I also have had a problem with the GPS on my Samsung Gear S3 Frontier. The GPS problem was caused by the Weather app. I went to the Gear S3 app on my iPhone, chose for Apps, Settings per App, Weather, set automatic refresh to every 6 hours and deselected the current location option. The Weather app on the Samsung Gear S3 now showed the message "Add currect location". Went back to the Gear S app on my iPhone and selected current location option again. In the Weather app on the Samsung Gear S3 now the current location was displayed. After that GPS functionality works fine in all the other Gear apps also. Problem seems to be solved.
Hi, I played a round of golf without my phone using the app Golf Navi on my gear s3 classic. Worked really well and was very accurate +-3m, impressive. That is also a way to see if the Gps works. the app also functions as a standalone feature which makes it even more usefull. The one thing i did notice was the drain in battery. It would be at about 30-40% after a round of golf, while my watch usually gets about 5 days of battery life with normal use. SO I think the developers of the apps and samsung really do not want to make use of the watch's on board GPS unless they really have to or else it eats away at the battery life. Also I think that the Developers of the tizen apps are also designing the software to work on the non GPS gear S2's and thus must rely on the phones location to identify a location. Just my 2 cents
Thanks for that - I think the support for the GPS will gradually improve but if you really need GPS in standalone buy something else - otherwise this is a great smart watch.!
@ Mr Analytical: Agreed I have zero buyers remorse. IT might not be the worlds best fitness watch or even the most insane smart watch but it is so damn good at nearly everything with great battery life. A jack of all trades and a master of most. I can highly recommend this to anybody at the moment just because it is so stable with the tizen os. I just wish that android wear can be flashed on the watch so that I could compare, but lets see what happens in the future. For any fence sitters reading this comment, The feature I use nearly everyday is the rotating bezel. best thing in a smart watch for sure, that alone made me choose this watch over android wear. It makes it just so enjoyable to use the watch. you try swiping on a tiny display and see how awkward that is.
Hey man, your GPS on that watch is not working as it should. It should not take that long and be that erratic. I had the same issue, you need to send it back reinstall the software. Samsung assessed mine and said that it was not working but fixed it for me.
You should be able to know your location even if you are 100+ miles away from either your phone or Internet. Mr A. is right, it's not what we were led to believe.
Hi! Actually the watch works standalone if you connect it to internet via WiFi. So try to switch on GPS and WiFi on the watch and connect to WiFi network, HereWeGo will work. So this app need the map files that are on the phone or on online server to work. Don´t ask me why we can´t load maps files on the watch. 4 gb are for what?!
I tried this. Getting a quick fix and a said accuracy of +- 6m, but when I enter the long and lat in google maps I'm in the arabian sea. 370km from the Somalian coast and almost 7000km from where I currently am. So yeah, gps shows results, but it's a bit off.
I was having trouble with my Gear S3 GPS exactly like what he is showing in these videos. It even did the same thing with the Quick GPS Position app. But, funny thing, after I rebooted it for a different reason, the GPS started working correctly. I can leave my phone at home and log the GPS of my run with the Samsung Health gear app. I hope he figures it out or gets a replacement.
thanks i got it worked out in the end the phone needs to be off or at least not connected at all i have a new video showing the gear sport compared to the s3 and in part 2 i will be showing what you just described..
I know this sounds like a stupid question but I see a phone app can you make and take calls from the watch? They don't mention it , is it just assumed?

Very strange as my Classic works fine with both bluetooth and wifi on even when I put my phone into Airplane mode. It does not make sense that you have to disable all communication methods on the watch in order for the GPS to work on the watch.
I think that's the issue... GPS should be standalone. It's not standalone if either/both Bluetooth or Wifi is on because the watch is then getting its GPS signal from your Phone or Internet (connected to the Phone). You should be able to know your location even if you are 100+ miles away from either your phone or Internet. Mr A. is right, it's not what we were led to believe.
+Mr Analytical I've looked at the long and lat from your screen and that places you almost in the same boat as me. Also a pretty far swim to Mogadishu.
Let me suggest a way EASIER way to prove GPS works. put your phone in airplane mode (with bluetooth off, of course), and check GPS. no need to change settings on your watch. Let me also suggest this: i was sure my GPS was not working, but after approx. 15days of use (I also used many times S health to track my sport activity), an automatic notification pop up on my watch by saying "turn on auto location to track your position" (or something like that, can't remember exactly.) So i clicked on the noification and went straight in the setting area related to that option, enabled it, and GPS started to work. I discovered that i missed that option so the GPS was disabled.
Anche io avevo lo stesso problema con il Gear S3 collegato ad uno Xiaomi Redmi Note 4; con il collegamento bluetooth, la localizzazione non funzionava. Ho capito che il Gear S3 quando è collegato al telefono utilizza sempre il GPS del telefono. Ho poi verificato che le applicazioni Samsung di gestione dell'orologio avevano di default una impostazione del risparmio batteria che le impediva di accedere al GPS quando chiamate in background. Modificata questa impostazione sul telefono, ora sull'orologio la localizzazione funziona bene (testato con Samsung Health, Endomondo, Pedometer). I also had the same problem with the Gear S3 connected to a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4; With bluetooth connection, location did not work. I understand that the Gear S3 when connected to the phone always uses the GPS of the phone. I then verified that Samsung's clock management applications had default a battery saver setting that prevented them from accessing the GPS when calling in the background. Modified this setting on the phone, now the clock location works well (tested with Samsung Health, Endomondo, Pedometer)
Lol. How many episodes did it take you to figure that out? It works perfectly fine in my car too, no need to go outside, sort of defeats the purpose if you do that. Maybe you have bad coverage there. If you had said at the beginning you were leaving your Bluetooth switched on you could have saved a lot of time. You could also have read your manual first. Smh.
Sure, tried both and what u can do with android wear isn't impossible with gear s3. U can download apps directly on ur watch, use google keep and alot of apps (due to compatibility) GS3 is really limited at the time. IMO
