Bought this and the NX1 and replaced my A7 and A6000, which replaced my 5D Mark III and Rebel SL1 :)) Now I do all my pro work for photography and 4K video seamlessly !! Amazing !!
Ohhhhhh, a Samsung review, so happy to see it. I hate it when Photography channels ignore new player in the market because of snobism. I will stick with my a6000, but not writing out Sammy, loving their first attempts.
It can also be the size and weight of it in your hand that is giving slight shake. But IS should be working enough, and sounds like it is not. Always great to watch your reviews!
Hey guys, Samsung release updated firmware that increases the video bit rate up to 70Mbps and address the menu issue you guys mention with the 120fps @ 720p. You can now easily select it in the "Movie Size" menu. I have yet to test it out but the firmware notes also mentions auto focus has been improved. You guys could put a little annotation stating this, to update this vids info.
Thanks for sharing this review, I'm not sure I'd buy one but it seems like they're getting close to a breakthrough in this class (vlogger class imo). I'm annoyed about the missing headphone/mic inputs, I do own a Zoom H1 but it seems like such an inexpensive thing that Samsung could have easily added them.
Unless one absolutely has to have 4K right now, for more enthusiast-minded photographers who'll do more with a camera than simply leave it in AUTO mode 90% of the time, at this point I'd stick with the a6000. It just offers a more refined and intuitive shooting experience over Samsung's typical first iteration "let's just throw all the latest gadgetry at the wall in order to see what "sticks" ", while forgetting about refinements and in some cases, even the basics. The Sony offers more customization which equals an easier time actually getting the shot that you want, rather than missing it because you had to look at a screen, push buttons, and dive into on-screen menus. As mentioned, even though the NX500 has one of the best screens on the market today (it's better looking, it's touch, and it's more versatile than the a6000's), the NX500's lack of any kind of a viewfinder really seems a glaring oversight at the feature and price level of a camera which does by contrast include at least a version of 4K video recording. The NX500 doesn't have a built-in flash unit, as does the a6000. No dedicated video mode on any dial for the NX500, you have to customize a button for that, and even after doing that, in at least some cases that will still necessitate more button pushing. The Sony has many more downloadable apps available to increase the functionality of the camera, which the new NX500 doesn't have as of this posting. The 4K video option right now as implemented by Samsung is quite limiting on this camera because of the crop factor. This camera obviously has some class-leading features (the sensor and the AMOLED touchscreen to name two of them) but for the money, a still brand new a6000 (to be replaced/joined by another new E-mount "a-series" camera from Sony hopefully in the next several months if not sooner according to the new camera rumor sites), is overall still unbeaten in its class for what is currently the best value for money right now, save perhaps for the 4K feature of the NX500..
+TrumpCarson2016 We need a good laugh ! Both cameras come equipped with 16-50 f3.5-f5.6 power zoom lenses. Quote me a price *and a source* where you can find a *Samsung-branded f2.8 zoom lens* for a price that makes the NX500 in any way (OTHER THAN HAVING 4K) a "better value for money spent", or how by simply hanging a better lens on the front of an NX500, *how that alone* erases or makes up for all of the other shortcomings and missing features of the NX500. Take your time, we'll wait...
+TrumpCarson2016 We need a good laugh ! And *you* obviously can't answer my questions. And it's obvious *why* you can't. It's because you have a brand new just days old RU-vid channel, and the only thing you want to use it for, is to try and start silly-assed, infantile, and utterly senseless fanboy pissing matches, and not for anything intelligent. Hopefully it is also "obvious" to you that your attempt at nonsense won't be humored here. Still waiting for you to simply answer the questions posed to you btw, but please by all means, take your time...
For the NX1, they have updated the firmware a lot, and for the FPS now, you get 25, 50 and 100 for PAL, or 30, 60 and 120 for NTSC, all in the FPS menu. The difference from that and the way you mention here where you select e.g. 25 FPS, then 0.25 to get 100, or 30 and 0.25 for 120 FPS, is that if you select the 0.25 way, you play the clip back as slow motion, with no sound cause sound isn't recorded then. If you select just normal 50, 100, 60 or 120 FPS, it plays back at those framerates again, with sound, so you have to adjust the FPS in post to get slow motion when you edit it. So maybe they have this updated in the NX500 as well.
Good job as ever, guys. Video from NX1 looks a bit weird. But c'mon Chris. No one care that much about Samsung. Release Sony A7RII review for us already, please!
TheCameraStoreTV Since Jordan talked a lot during the Rx10, Rx100 iii and the a7ii review, I hope to see Jordan talking a lot again in the upcoming Sony reviews. That attractive slurry voice.
Now you guys edited and shot this episode just as well as you always do but the NX1 video just doesn't tick the right boxes, it's over sharpened like a mobile phone's video which creates artifacts and the colour information looks like it's from 2008. Like I said great episode but I think we can agree the NX1's video is disappointing.
TheXtremesoundz They didn't properly change any of the settings. It looks over sharpened because he left the sharpening on default (0) and when you have a 6.5k sensor doing a full read out and down sampling to 4k any in camera sharpening will kill the video, like you have seen in this one. The NX1 needs to be pegged down to -5 or lower sharpening in order to get away from the "video" look. They also didn't change any settings in the Gamma DR profile or Master Black Pedestal leading to over baked colors and less DR. Check other RU-vid videos on the NX1 and you will see a big difference from this one.
TheXtremesoundz Yeah well its not a camera DESIGNED specific for video, its a stills camera with video functions unlike the GH4 which is more like a video camera with stills functions. The NX1 requires tweaking in the settings to work, Samsung has updated the camera pretty heavily and the video out of NX1 beats the GH4 hands down. Only V-Log will save the GH4
Finding it hard to get sharp photos from the NX 500?? I finding it hard to get blurred shots down to 1/20 sec. Go figure. Sensational photo IQ with the Samsung 30mm f/2.
Papii Doss why? just grab a one min 4k clip and try to convert it!.. on my macbook it took 20mins to convert just one min of h.265 4k footage into h.264 or prores.. thats the only thing that stopped me buying three for my multicam interview work.. at 15-20mins per interview, that would of been just 24hours of solid transcoding before i am able to use the footage ! :(
First off I'd like to say I'm a huge fan and love you RU-vid channel. I have learned a great deal and I've put it to good use. I just had a few questions and I was wondering if you could help answer them, Best of your capability and knowledge. 1. I am looking to purchase my first Mirrorless camera, I've narrowed it down to two options. The Samsung NX500 and the Sony a5100. I know they are both great cameras, I'm looking for something small and compact when the weight and size of my DSLR is too big, I want the camera that will shoot the best images video is secondary. I have chosen these models because of the LCD screens, and small profile. I like the controls and the gizmos on the NX500, but I also like the variety of extras and lenses that sony offers. Giving your honest opinion what would be the best all round camera? Specially in low light conditions and good dynamic range. If you can please give me your two cents I would really appreciate it. 2. Do you ever plan on reviewing the new Pentax K 70? I think Pentax is coming back and they got some really good equipment. thank you very much
Nice review! However I couldn't get a sense of how does the AF compare to A6000. I currently have an A6000 but interested in NX500 depending on how well its AF works in low light and in tracking mode.
Nice review, but the video quality is not really convincing me about the greatness of NX1... or NX500, as they are very similar, and there's that crop factor too. Speaking of crop factors, how about reviewing some Sony FE mount lenses, like the 28mm f2? Why? cos I have A7 now...:)
Not sure if you've been able to lay hands on the NX3000, but how would you rank/compare the NX3000 to the NX500 (aside from the additional 8 mp and 4k video)?
Would you recommend this camera for someone like me that is just getting into filming tech videos? I mean it is 4K which nothing else offers at this price point so it has that very big plus, so I would prefer it over a 1080p option that I'll have to upgrade earlier than this one. I don't really care about the missing audio jack.
It's a decent camera, but after using it for over two months I really want to get rid of it. Like you said the shutter slaps too hard, making long exposures nearly impossible too take long exposures.
I would love to know what the nx1 settings were when you filmed this review. Did you use DR Gamma? I have to say I think the gh4 with Vlog L on the last review looked way better :) I know you guys always try things with the reviews but was just wondering and love the videos you guys are making :) also @jordan how did you like shooting with the NX1 and the workflow.
jason rae This was shot on the 'DR Gamma' profile. I far prefer the profiles on the GH4, even Cine-D, as the image was oversaturated and somewhat oversharpened. As Chris mentioned, I really don't like the interface for the NX1, with the 'video preview' display. And the workflow is fine after transcoding, but the transcode from H.265 really slows you down. Jordan @ TCSTV
TheCameraStoreTV I am working on that now and trying to figure out is the extra boost of image quality worth that extra work. Also with the Vlog coming sometime in 201? I wonder if its that much at all. Thanks so much and love your videos, you guys do an amazing job.
TheCameraStoreTV It looks like you used Gamma DR but didn't adjust any settings or change the Master Black Pedestal (I can tell just by how sharp the video is). It also looks like the CAF was left on because you can see it hunting through most of the beginning. I understand if you don't like certain things about a camera but please use proper settings before you pass judgement.
I already own a DSLR for photography and such etc. But i want a smaller camera, so like a mirrorless specifically. my budget is around 500-700 dollars.
you reviewed the panasonic g7 just 4 days ago, what is the difference between these 2 cameras regarding 4k video ? (especially with their kit lens, is there a kit lens sharper than the other in 4k video?) thank you
the auto focus on the nx300 is bad on videos, i bought the sony a5100 which was better but no hot shoe or full touch screen was the only drawback. waiting on the a6000 replacement or 5100
Without an optical viewfinder, it seems to me that the real Sony competitor is the a5100, and @ $400 for the a5100/16-50 kit, it's also a far better value.
nice review, but you should have mentioned the bitrate is too low for 4k: 36Mbit, 40Mbit for UHD. so if you want to shoot video the nx1 is the better choice or the panasonic lx100
Actually, the 4k video seems to do just fine without a high bit rate, though I must mention that the highlights of this camera get blown out on both photos and video.
Drasko Stojadinovic | Photography The H265 codec it uses needs around half the bitrate for the same quality as H254, so it's not that bad. I would have liked to have seen a sample of the video output in the review.
cavalrycome yes the h265 codec is also a problem, it´s very new and not much hardware can play it or can import it to be processed, so you have to convert it (that will change of course) would be great if the camera store tv could make a comparison video of the codec, and it would be very interesting what the camera man has to say about this
Drasko Stojadinovic | Photography H.265 is a huge pain, the transcode times are really rough. The actual quality is quite good though, it looks like 100Mbps H.264 footage. Jordan @ TCSTV
TheCameraStoreTV thx, thats really interesting, so you would say the 4k video quality can be the same as on nx1 or gh4? Do you think the H.265 will have any advantages in terms of recovering highlights, shadows..compared to slog2?
The nx 300 was to slow for serious work. I think this one is the same. Still my nx 300 got a really good IQ. Im not going to buy another samsung compact camera until they release a VF option or the NX 1 get really cheap xD
TheCameraStoreTV Thanks Jordan. I know this is pretty stale, but what consumer software would you recommend for editing videos in that way? I have a Sony NEX 5T and it drives me nuts that I can hear the focus motor on the audio.
+spleujo or if you could get your hands on samsungs own shotgun mic you would get the audio input directly inn to your camera. It only works on the NX. Sadly I think they don't produce this mic any more and it's hard to find one.
+Verl Cuevas Depends how important video is for you, cause Pentax has very low detail video, and Samsung has been completely silent since August 2015 about anything new, and their products are selling out and getting not available many places. And the cameras aren't really comparable, the K-3 is more like the NX1 really. The K-3 is a great stills camera, you won't go wrong, and lots of stuff for it, and it's still coming more.
Verl Cuevas I haven't compared them, but I think if you go to DPReview.com, to the review of the NX500 here: www.dpreview.com/reviews/good-genes-samsung-nx500-review-posted/8 You can select the K-3 as well to compare the images from both cameras (and two more cameras as well) at the same time.
Samsung NX-500 shoot 4k video. They crop video when I hit record button. Is very very terrible design. I have to stop recording and move back until I have the right angel. Take to much time to shoot 4k video. I never see any camera design like that. Anybody own this camera they will get mad when they shoot 4k Video. I don't recommend people to buy this camera. I hope this memo will go to Sangjun Yu and Hyunsik Yu. Both Senior Engineers at Samsung Electronics
Samsung lenses that they do offer are sharp and inexpensive. Their 30mm f/2 and 45 f/1.8 are great for $200-250 lenses. Sharper than Zeiss apsc offerings for the A6000. The 30mm f/2 resolves 14/20mp on an old 20mp sammy Nx20 sensor so it should resolve close to 20/28 on this sensor according to DXOmark. Gotta spend $1200 to get 13-16mp out of 24 on an A6000
Should have gone flat except saturation, turn down the sharpness to -7 and sharpen in post if necessary, Samsung fixed the bitrate issues which caused banding earlier, but hopefully they will up the bitrate even more.
Wonderful review like ever! So what would you suggest me between sony a6000 and samsung nx500. Premise that the lack of viewfinder is not a problem for me, and i'm not interested in videos. I need it for street photography. Thanx!
I would like to start making videos, like places I visit or myself talking, so in this case what would be better for me? nx 500 or lx100? Or maybe even something else? Thanks for help! :-)
+TheCameraStoreTV Hello! Nice review! I would like your point of view please, as you have test both, can you tell me which one you would buy for both photo and video between Lumix G7 and NX500 please? (With basic kit lens). Thx :)
Love the Sensor and touch screen, it's a tempting camera, but to change the subject, I wish Sony would get in the game with the touch screens, I am really disappointed that the new A7r ll doesn't have a fully articulating touch screen, 4K internal video with IBIS and no touch focus, and Samsung's touch screen looks really nice, but I don't get why so many cameras have the pull out screens that don't fully articulate, anyway I wish I could ask a top executive at Sony why they are dragging there feet with the touch screens, three new cameras releases last week in 2015 with 4K video, with no touch screens, i just don't get it, and the one camera they have with a touch screen the a5100, it isn't fully functional, common Sony give us the fully articulating and fully functional touch screens, and Chris, please ask the question for me when you talk to Sony, thanks
What's your opinion in this camera vs the panasonic G7 and the Sony a6000? I have the nx300 and am looking for something newer in this price range, would love to hear your thoughts and also looking for one that shoots great in lower lighting as well. I've seen this and the G7 video and am having a hard time deciding which I like more.
I think both the Samsung and Sony kit lens come from the same ODM, both share the same optic formular, features and size. So far nobody pointed that out.
I don't think there is even a comparison. The G7 has EVF, articulated swivel screen and tons of other video oriented feats whereas the NX500 doesn't, it does have 4K but most of the video oriented stuff is on the big brother, the NX1. The NX500 is more like a GX7, it can shoot video but it's not video oriented camera.
