hi Marteen, so glad to see you back. One thing that blows me away is not only how capable these phone cameras are, but the usage of use of the bundled software. After a few years out of cameras, I was tempted back with an XT-5 and I love the feel and creativity its engendered in me, but the in camera software for simply sharing the photos is archaic. Camera Manufacturers just don't seem to be able to bridge the "shareability gap" Samsungs "Can you send me that". I'm really not interested in more pixels, or even more lenses from Camera manufacturers, can they please find a way to make the cameras talk to the real world , using cell phones as a guide? It's almost as if the camera manufacturers want "be difficult" as a distinguishing factor.
@MaartenHeilbron

hehe, certainly seems like that. In their defence many have apps that transfer images from camera to phone as soon as they're taken.

There's various challenges, but for me though, I could successfully auto transfer all photos from various Fuji cameras since they made that available. They are all auto shared with my wife, and also uploaded to my NAS (previously Google Photos until they discontinued unlimited storage).

I always recommend using the 3:4 format since you get the highest resolution when taking photos. I don't understand why that's the case but if you're taking a regular shot, use the 3:4 or 4:3. Awesome review! Not a lot of people go in depth with the camera settings and what the stock camera has to offer so thanks for that.

They say the best camera is the camera you have with you. It's wonderful that the cameras most of us have with us at all times are getting so good. Also, nearly 1000 FPS slow motion on a phone!? The only other camera I can think of that has that kind of slow motion capability is Sony's RX 10 IV, after that you have to get cameras specifically designed for super slow motion. Simply incredible. Thanks for the pleasant and informative review as always.

Hi Maarten. First of all, great video, very refreshing to see a dedicated and detailed phone camera review. I would add a very minor point about the stylus pen that come with the device can also be used for remote shutter, that would be useful for some people and/or use case e.g. family gathering photos.

The review kit I received (sadly) didn't include the pen. DIdn't realize it was a standard accessory.

@@MaartenHeilbron I believe the stylus is nested within the phone as standard for the Ultra series, it’s flush in the bottom left corner of the phone and can be popped out whenever needed, but I digress. Once again, thanks for making a very detailed review.

Dear Mr. Heilbron, Thanks for an another great in-depth review. One Samsung feature, that had always impressed me is the picture stacking after position-alignment in the Night-Mode for photos. Unfortunately (to my knowledge) this is the only mode, where this is possible. Do you know any way to enable this in other modes (especially the pro mode)? Because this would open up *handheld* long exposure night shots with lower iso numbers than the Night-Mode would use otherwise...
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 9 месяцев назад
Thanks for your kind words. It is an interesting capability. I don't see how to use it with other modes. Have you contacted Samsung?
@RepLicIt
@RepLicIt 9 месяцев назад
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you for your lightning fast answer. No I haven't contacted Samsung, yet: mostly because my customer service experiences so far could be better (in geneal and not in relation to Samsung). Interestingly there are quite a bit of quirks in the Samsung camera app: i.e. locking up the two telephoto lenses in video pro mode, but enabling 120fps FHD (when sacrificing image stabilization) for the other two lenses...

I've only discovered the channel recently, having returned to photography after many years. The videos are so engaging and well presented. I'd watch one about paint drying on a wall, and I'm sure I'd relish it, if created by this channel! I enjoy using a mirrorless camera, taking photos, and messing around with the images afterwards in software. There's no denying though that the instant gratification provided by cameras on phones like the S23 Ultra is very appealing. I'll take similar images, using the phone and the camera. It's exactly as said in the video, "Let 100 flowers bloom." As another channel (Simon d'Entremont) said, photography isn't a competition. Great images lift everyone up, regardless of how they're created.

I had been questioning myself about going all in smartphone photography and sell my cameras. As a hobbyist i think a smartphone could be a valid enough tool. I found very good photo apps, camera apps, even some for free. And very good video apps too. For street photo, candid photo, vacations, etc, a smartphone is enough. And even can be a great pro tool for video and photo, you can shoot RAW DNG video, in 10, 12 and 16bit with the MotionCam app. That is the level of advance in the tiny pocketeable devices!

"just point n' shoot" is all cellphone cameras are good for! I mean, regardless of how many fancy abbreviations and fps the so called "camera" is including its sophisticated software/firmware may be with all the glorious "bells and whistles" it will ALWAYS lag behind that of an actual DSLR/mirrorless camera.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Год назад
You have failed to understand what I was trying to explain and demonstrate in this video. Yes: not the same, however there is a great deal of value from excellent low light performance, astounding 8K/;30 video 200Mp images - please take a moment to review your prejudices. I'm not suggesting it's the equivalent of a camera, but it is a very interesting device.
@skakdosmer
@skakdosmer Год назад
Confusing. Unsurprisingly it's similar to my Samsung A42, but probably a lot more advanced. Or maybe should I say a lot more convoluted. I find it frustrating not to be able to control the aperture. The camera has too few settings, as well as far too many. For my taste, that is. I'm puzzled by the super high resolution. Okay, so the camera can produce 200 mp files, or in my case 48 (yes, the A42 has a 48 mp camera, go figure), but can the lens deliver sufficient sharpness to match the crazy high resolution? I don't have the answer, but I'd be surprised. I find the ergonomics of any phone cam terrible, so I can only consider it an emergency camera.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Год назад
All valid comments - however, I was surprised that the 200Mp mode worked without pixel shift or other allowances and that the images were very sharp and clear. As I said, they don't work with the same restrictions. I wish I'd used "convoluted" in the review, an apt term for this device. As always, nice to see your avatar among the comments.

My Xiaomi 12S Ultra was even better with its 1inch sensor but it broke and I moved to this phone because the Xiaomi is hard to get in Thailand or even outside China. I was a bit disappointed by the Samsung S23 Ultra particularly in low light so I bought a Canon G5X MKII for when I don't want to bring my full frame camera with me. I gave up the idea of purchasing a new full frame camera in favor of iphone 14. However the reviewers inability/ unwillingness to pass a judgment which device provides better esthetical/ technical results is a failure. A person without any experience can say "Let 100 flowers bloom" and be right. In their case, that is. They simply do not know enough. However when a person whose abilities to judge have been cultivated over the decades says it, it is just an uncessary restraint. The fact that viewers watch this channel should be viewed above all as an expression of their respect to the ability to judge competently.

Very interesting video. Whilst I will NOT be replacing my full-frame DSLRs and my full-frame mirrorless camera with a phone, this video does show how powerful and creative a tool the latest phones are. If I am out-and-about and I do not have my cameras with me, a mobile phone can create great still and video images. It would be interesting to see you do a video about the latest-and-greatest iPhone ??
