I think (in my mind at least) it's official. PLS is better than IPS. This is hands down the best monitor I've ever used including my VA 30" beast at home. ncix.com/search...
I find Linus to be the best youtube reviewer. He was actually my first too with the Lanboy Air case reveiw. I bought this monitor in 24 inches because I think it's the perfect size for me
The good old days! And now he's moving in to his big new linus media group office/studio/building. I wrote this on august 20 2015 so he is in the middle of moving in his new office right now.
@KevinRitchie I'm really impressed by the Samsung PLS display. It blows away any VA/IPS panels I've seen in the past with its DEEP blacks and vibrant colours. Go with this one. You will not regret it. Also please note the resolution is only SLIGHTLY lower than the Dell 30" to which you're referring, and I think in some ways the higher pixel density in a smaller panel is a GOOD thing.
@iRacerMSL That's understandable. If people have the hardware, the space, and the ability to not notice the bezels, three monitors probably would be best for them. I went with an HP 30" ZR30w recently, kind of a big brother to this samsung and I love having so much room on a single monitor.
@iRacerMSL More sense in what way? Purely resolution? Size? If you do, you then need dual GPU's if you're going to run that with Nvidia, then you have to deal with the Bezels. Don't forget to go IPS or you'll have discolored screens at an angle.
Because some montiors, like this one is really high resolution, so the HZ rate will be 60Hz usually, which isn't.. Perfect. So if you overclock your monitor using the TITAN's driver software you can get closer to the 120Hz response time of a high end 1080p monitor, for free, on a HD+ Resolution :) Im just about to buy a 2560x1440 monitor and a GTX Titan so im going to do it!
question -- do displayport 2 HDMI adapters exist ? I have yet to see a video card with display port.... so what is the main use of the displayport on this monitor ? , something like a projector ?
for 400 dollars you can go to Microcenter and get the Auria EQ276W, which uses the same LG panel as the Apple Cinema monitor and is 2560x1440. Best valued monitor i ever bought.
I wonder why did you give this monitor a really good review but from all the people that bought this monitors and reviews on the net. They all said this monitor is not that good in term of color quality. So there must be something wrong here with your impressions and review?
@productionvideobb Hi, I just got the 24" version back from repair, I also had a backlight bleed issue but it was all covered by the warranty, no issues there. Now I have a ultra-black and smooth backlight. The colours are truly amazing on this monitor, I can only recommend it.
So how exactly is PLS better than the others? --- What I would like to see one day is a Full-Color 128-Bit Volumetric Quad-HD 16:9 Multi-Touch 750 Kilohertz E-Paper Display with no ghosting, and an RGBY AMOLED Backlight.
Anytime. Please believe me.. I would absolutely LOVE it if they had already made a 2560x1440 rez monitor that supports 120hz at that rez. Even 85hz would be great to me( that much more fps "cushion" so to speak). It would be easily 1500.00 bucks though. They will end up making it though it won't become mainstream pricing and available until 2013 chances are if not 2014..It usually takes around 1.5 to 2 years for the " sweeter" price vs value: ratio to balance out. ( aka depreciation on new car)
It's a monitor that has a resolution of 2560x1440. and it's only 60hz. It has to be 120hz to support 3d. and they haven't made any monitors of THAT resolutions with 120hz at that resolution yet. Chances are they are not going to make the monitor support 3d unless it's maximum rez also supports 3d at that rez. They know no one will pay 150 to 400 more bucks for a hyper hd rez monitor that can only run 3d at regular full hd rez. That's life. gotta wait longer.
Why on earth would you use this for a PS3? return it immediately and get a 1080p 3D monitor. The resolution of this monitor is like twice what the PS3 outputs- meaning it'll look like shit. The only gaming that should be done on this type is with a top of the line PC. Current consoles can't even begin to support that resolution. You will see no benefit in this over a 1080p monitor- as a matter of fact, it'll look worse in most cases because it's scaling the image.
next time i invest on graphics, ill be buying 3 27 inch monitors !! and i will need a set of graphics cards...like two 670 4gbs so.. ahahahhaahahahah LOL 500$ per graphics card...not yet ill wait 2 years and i'll prolly get like a single gtx 880 (or what ever it will be called lol) with a nice little 650 watt psu and i could still fit it in my case !! lol and it will cost less in gpu's actualy i won't have to change psu i have 875 watt.. lol
@Purepromedia The 27" SA850 has true 8bit panel which can render the full sRGB and Adobe RGB color spaces natively. 6bit+AFRC panels use dithering to emulate an 8bit color spectrum. If you get an 850 without back light bleed, such as mine, it's a fantastic monitor. Especially if you hate the glossy reflective glass screen of the Apple Cinema Display, or the heavy matte anti glare filters on the other IPS panels, which make whites look sparkly and grainy.
@TheBomiheko True, but if you're a casual gamer and not someone in the professional field, you don't need a beast monitor like this one (there are plenty of good ones under 200 dollars). The people who get this monitor, probably work in video editing or graphics design or they are PROFESSIONAL gamers, so they are able to make money using this monitor. Btw there are excellent TN panels out there.
Linus. The contrast ratios do actually mean something. You have to compare static and dynamic contrasts. Static contrast is the darkest black and lightest white the monitor can show at the same time (so 1000 shades different on screen). Dynamic contrast is the amount of available contrast throughout the entire use so 30000-1 would have 30000 shades but may only be able to show 700:1 shades per second. Just think static as instant, and dynamic as full range. 2 different things
@delameu I have over 3-year old NEC 24" monitor with dvi for pc and HDMI for my ps3 (or 360 if U like) sound can go to monitor through HDMI (monitor does have same decent stereo speakers) or passthrough monitor to external audio system with spdif out, HDMI is good even for monitor if U have console or blu-ray that for some reason can't be plugged to tv (i.e. tv is always used for tv not for gaming ;)
@TalesOfWar I like Sharp Quattron hdtvs (with Japanese panels), but only Quattrons, beacuse Sharp does have crappy chinese panels too in their tvs :/ (I mean not production, but construction, cause there is big diffrence to construct product or to produce, Japanese constructions are almost always better even if they are produced in China), but Sony looks perfect and have great picture quality in their hi-end tvs :) but not that good as Panasonic plasma :D
@V4V3nd3tta92 and the best tvs are Panasonic plasma NeoPDP with Infinite Black Pro, I've seen many times those tvs and picture quality & color is AMAZING! SUPERB! no LCD gets close to plasma from Panasonic :) of course there were Pioneer plasmas but not anymore (you propably know it extreme hi-end but they were very expensive and company stopped production), Samsung makes good computer panels (but have problems with pixels and warranty not always covers it), I prefer Dell NEC Eizo computer lcds
@V4V3nd3tta92 there are thousands of diffrent awards ;) Samsung have problems with dark colors in their tvs, not black but dark colours (which are not visible) and also screen washing from diffrent angles, Sony does not, there is Sony-Samsung display company but that doesn't mean that they are the same, because they are not, I read many tv reviews, if Sony make hi-end tv it is hi-end in all picture quality properties, Samsung often gets something very bad (even if anything else is very good)
@yosmer333 You think this resolution is big? You mustn't of heard of UHD or Ultra High Definition, with a huge resolution of 7,680 x 4,320 (Or known as 4320p) it creams the other competition. Sharp have developed an 85" TV with 4320p and are set to sell it in 2016 - 2020 (And of course you can always just hook up your PC to it, if your going to get picky.) There's an article about it: solidlystated (DOT) com/hardware/sharp-4320p-hi-vision-television/ And a RU-vid video: /watch?v=9U7e_quvkPQ
Hello ! nice video and awesome monitor! Im buying a new monitor and really need help with it plz ! (anyone) Looking for a gaming, IPS, 1080p, 27'' monitor in range of 350€/450$ I was looking all around the internet and cant really find what im looking for... so im asking here . ... maby this one ? Dell S2740L Black 27" 7ms (GTG) (it's on newegg) thanks for any kind of help !
WOW...killer monitor. if wasn't for the 1 inch or .75 inch bezel width it would ( for me) =great choice for x3 monitors for eyefinity or the nvidia equal. either way...I'm saving for it. MATTE screen? check. great color reproduction? check. low ms response time? check. good i/o panel and video input panel? check. done :D
@Martinx88813 why people think that Samsung is very good brand? I don't understand it, Samsung is South Korea, Sony is Japan, with all respect to South Korea and Samsung, Japan is much cooler and better country :) Sony is cooler (and ofter better too, imho Sony does have better engineers, but Samsung is OK and in some ways they cooperate together)
@rmaucigasha TNs are bad but not that bad, with some TN-angles pain U can watch it ;) my old NEC have TN panel and I use it for pc and console gaming for years and it is decent, but price was ok when I bought it in the prehistoric times ;))) right now IPS monitors panels form Dell or LG are so cheap that nobody should buy TNs anymore, btw all IPS computer panels are made by LG
@V4V3nd3tta92 nope, Sony makes better LCD HDTVs and Panasonic makes the best tvs (plasma NeoPDP), better Blu-ray players, better music players, Sony makes better tablet and best smartphone for gamers (Xperia Play), Sony makes great gaming consoles, better laptops than Samsung (quality), imho Sony is better but Samsung is ok
Because there is currently no such thing as a 120hz IPS screen on the market unless you overclock?. Do some research on IPS pannel technology vs the others like TN, VA, PLS. IPS has the best colours for graphic design and 120hz is a must for gaming latency so you get the best of both worlds.
simply because HDMI was meant as a multimedia interface, and not bigger stuff. And they want to make money off it... I don't know. HDMI is a closed system, restricted by licensing. That's why we now have DisplayPort, no licensing fees and an open standard. Makes cables cheaper!
I can understand his question, well it depends on the content you are pushing to the monitor. TheQuiteLonelyWind, imagine displaying a 480p RU-vid Video on a 1080p sccreen vs 1440p screen, it would not make that much of a difference. So i think his question was ambiguous but still worth answering.
Usually in game, a monitor of the same size with a higher resolution would produce a bigger picture (Let you see more of the game). This is no more detailed but just lets you see more. Text may seem smaller on a higher resolution display but this can be changed in windows settings.
looking forward to getting ALL the specs of the sb970 and seeing how that compares to this monitor. I dont yet know the ms response time. looking for 2560x1440 monitor that doesn't have the damn 12ms lag. ( yes I notice that. play fps games on a 12ms monitor and you'll see what I'm talking about)
It's a shame that this monitor only supports sRGB colour space. Other IPS monitors such as the Dell Ultrasharp U24W10 or the Asus ProArt PA246Q supports both sRGB and AdobeRGB with the latter covers much more the visible colour spectrum which is very important for photo and video editing.
@Neomis01 That depends on the input latency, more than anything (please note that response time and input latency are not the same thing). Holding thumbs that @LinusTechTips will do a proper input latency test for this monitor, as I'm also interested in hooking it up to my GTX580 for BF3.
Wow finally a new samsung panel that doesn't reflect like a mirror =) The S27A950 was awful for that and when i say mirror i don't mean a minor blurred reflection i mean a clear as day mirror that i could use to gel my hair. Nice to see that this monitor does not duplicate that.
Not natively, but there's tricks to pull it off. I've managed with my Dell U2711 by creating a custom resolution and basically forcing the higher resolution through, since the data bandwidth of newer HDMI does support it, it's just restricted by licencing.
If you want the best monitor money can buy for gaming get a Yamakasi Catleap OC. Its a IPS with 120hz overclockable some reaching 135hz. They are getting hard to purchase the overclocking ones now but are worth it.
Say what now? And also people in offices, apartments and the such who need discreet local audio that doesn't boom across a large area. Not to mention it's practically a single cable design, meaning less clutter on work space.
I need some help over here !!! I'm was a laptop user then 2 days ago I bought a desktop with a hight resolution display and I just want to know whats the best way to connect my PC to my display HDMAI DVI ets ???
so whats better in another episode you was goingon about 120hz being a must now your saying you might change to this and its 60hz :S hmmmm im really stuck on what to get? anyon help me with the pros and cons? please
@t0ngu professional picture quality reviews shows that Sony tvs are better (better picture quality than Samsung), but Panasonic plasma are the best, imho Samsung laptops are ok but Sony are better for many reasons
*sigh* it just gets worse and worse.. im stuck between choosing the sa850 or u2711 - not for the colours but ive heard the grain on the u2711 is terrible.. Can anyone shed a light on that?
HOLY SHIT SO MANY COOL STUFF WHAT HAPPENS TO ALL OF THESE STUFF? DOES IT GO IN THE STOCK OF THE STORE HES WORKING FOR? GIVE ONE OF THESE TO ME PLEASE OR ONE OF THE COOL VIDEOCARDS.. MINE 5550 IS BROKEN:(
all i thought when i saw the tittle was "expensive" then i clicked watched the video and clicked the link in the description saw the price, look at my wallet "sigh" why im poor :(
So... how would this one or the "improved" S27A850T model compare to Apple 27" (thunderbolt or cinema) ?? Im a photographer, and high end retoucher, so Im not interested in gaming.
Bad camera man! Also, why are companies working on advanced LCD monitors that only display 2D images instead of progressing with 3D technology? I thought 3D technology is the future!!
how much hz has it? didnt found that information on google :/ 120? 200? 60? or what because im interrested to that monitor but if it has only 60 to 85 hz im gonna stay with my benq xl
I just bought the Samsung Syncmaster P2770 from Costco for $199.00 actucally bought 2 of them one for me and one for her.. they are awsome especially since my old monitor was a NEC 17"
The only difference I can see between a TN, and IPS is the viewing angle is worse on TN panels. But even then, IPS panels do not have perfect viewing angles either.
i should receive my dwk within two weeks and i assume the backlight bleeding was addressed since all the complaints. should be interesting to see if it's still noticeable
@productionvideobb if you got bad one doesn't mean they all like that. bleeding is problem on all monitors (almost) nowdays, even top nec's have this problem frequently
Other then viewing angle, there is not much difference between IPS/PLS and TN in my opinion, it really just depends on how picky you are about image quality.
The 2560 x 1400 is a lot of pixels. Will it look better vs 3d @ 1920 x 1080? I think I would choose that unit over a 27" 3D monitor. Anyone here using 3d?
@TheBomiheko I own 4 BenQ monitors and i don't give a shit? Good enough for me, BenQ is cheap and you get quality i don't want to waste to much cash on a monitor..
holy fff $800 :O When i got my 26" 1920x1200 samsung it was $500 but then it is LCD! Imma wait till after my ivy bridge upgrade and see if price goes down.
make it faster, with titan you can oc without "breaking" the drivers linus got 82 hz on a 1600p ips monitor (i think ips, one of the good quality ones)
why did u buy it if you don't use it like a bussiness monitor? I have this monitor and for use it for work (for example Photoshop, etc.) it's just great.
