I had the opportunity to see and hear Samuel in person when he gave a recital benefiting the opera company in my city. A tremendous once in a life time opportunity to be certain 👍🙂
Those triplets are so difficult to keep the bass core in, and Ramey's performance of this aria has always just blown me away. It's the one aria I have so much trouble with in this work because my voice is not as versatile as his. More than just impressive.
All views are subjective of course but much as I like and admire this singer I wouldn't elevate him to the height expressed here. In my view Sherrill Milnes way outclasses Mr R. One other thing: Mr R is a baritone, not a bass...
@@DavidHughes-op6zl good thing I couldn’t give a rat’s ass about what you have to say about anything, especially after having read THAT sort of opinion. In addition, Ramey a baritone? What BARITONE sang The Grand Inquisitor? If you like Milnes so much go gush over him on one of his videos and leave us Ramey fans alone. People just can’t resist trying to ruin someone else’s enjoyment of something.
You're clearly incapable of engaging in civilised debate simply because someone dares to have a constructively different view to your own. It says much more about you than me... How very sad that, poor soul, you feel compelled to use foul language, be crass and rude. Not that it offends me in the slightest, I simply feel immensely sorry for you. @@DavidHughes-op6zl well mr high and mighty, I didn’t seek you out for your “view.” You came onto my comment going on and on about how Ramey was inferior, when I never asked, nor do I care in the slightest what you have to say about anything. You just can’t resist seeing someone enjoy Ramey or probably anything else for that matter, without butting in trying to ruin it. If I wanted your opinion I’d have asked for it. Now you want to feign offense because someone called you out on your nonsense. Your intent was clear from The beginning. Get on your high horse and ride off far away from me and we can all be happy.
Valerie Pitts- lady solti, before an interview with Ramey on R.3. said he had a voice that made her go weak at the knees:absolutely-and in 'On The Town' too, not to mention Rossini's Journey to Rehims with flute obbligato!:-)
I think the aria suits a bass rather than a baritone. Splendid as Mr R is in this bruvura aria his timbre seems a tad too light to convey the 'bite' the piece requires...
@@charlesm.5476 THAT'S a much more civilised response. Thank you. My mistake. (In the official blurb about him , strictly speaking he's a bass-baritone.)
@@DavidHughes-op6zl Strictly speaking he is a basso cantante. Whatever Wikipedia says, Ramey himself has always referred to himself as a bass, as did his management. The ability to do bass baritone roles simply speaks to his versatility. The only bass-baritone I know of to sing King Philip in Don Carlos was Jose Van Dam, and it was admittedly too low for him.
Oh my goodness, the flack I've variously attracted for making a simple mistake about Ranmey's voice range. Astounding. I must surely stand trial in the highest court of Snootydom.
