Japanese armour is thought to have evolved from the armour used in ancient China and Korea. Cuirasses and helmets were manufactured in Japan as early as the 4th century.
Japanese armour was generally constructed from many small iron (tetsu) and/or leather (nerigawa) scales (kozane) and/or plates (ita-mono), connected to each other by rivets and macramé cords (odoshi) made from leather and/or braided silk, and/or chain armour (kusari). Noble families had silk cords made in specific patterns and colors of silk thread.
The armour was usually brightly lacquered to protect against the harsh Japanese climate

It's a 16th century lamellar armor or laminar made to look like lamellar. The curved, slightly globose form is from the second half of the 16th century. Japanese torso armor before the 16th century didn't look like that. A15th century Do would look like a V from the front. In the 14th century tailoring in the V form had already happened, but a Do from that century would likely be untailored.

@nodosa994
@nodosa994 6 лет назад
You would really have to be bias (like Purpleanex) if you actually believe Samurai armor is "shit". In my personal experience and to my knowledge, the arms race between Japan and the hole of Europe has been pretty interesting. For example, the 10th and 11th century, Knights used mail armor that would at times, not even cover their elbow and forearms, leaving their arms totally exposed. While the Samurai are more armored during that same era, because at the time, the majority of the Samurai have dropped the shields by now. By the 16th century, both Samurai and Knights would wear full plate and curiasses since thanks to the help of Dutch merchants and other Western influences. A misconception on Japanese warfare only worked in Japan is also false as Japan has more than once invaded Korea and a few other islands long before the late 19th century. As a matter of fact, Japanese warfare was very advance by the 15th century as they have adopted the usage of Pikes and Matchlock (Pike&Shot) and almost defeated Korea, had it not been for Logistical set backs from naval combat back at sea. As for Lacquered question. The reason why the Samurai even used Lacquere to begin with, is not for protection. Metal and padding does that job just right. Lacquer was used to protect against the weather since armor such as Lamellar and other along the likes are susceptible to water and can really harm the armor. And so, Lacquer was used to water proof their armor to the best of their ability and it worked so they continued to use it even up until the Boshin war. As for Knights or other European armor, by the middle ages, most have adopted mail, and mail was pretty easy to clean out if there was a problem with it. Plate also was pretty easy to maintain as well with little to no problems when it comes to water sinking into the suit.
@titytitmk2738
@titytitmk2738 6 лет назад
Steel mail or plate armour doesnt need it. The only thing you need to worry about there is rust, which doesnt form if the armour is properly cared for. Many knights in Europe did paint their armour, though, in order to protect it against rust as paint would shield the steel from water.

Hector Hernandez I looked up some tosei gusoke (probably butchered the spelling) particularly the one worn by Uesugi Kenshin, they actually incorporate a lot of European features but still manage to keep that Japanese flare to their armor designs.
@pypy1986820
@pypy1986820 5 лет назад
Tosei Gusoku is designed for matchlock warfare and the impact cavalry warfare. Aside from the look, it is superior to earlier Samurai armors in almost every single way due to the fact it was made of steel plates instead of mostly bamboos of the earlier armors that only really protects sword slashes and low poundage bows
@baronprocrastination1722
@baronprocrastination1722 5 лет назад
@@pypy1986820 from what I know, the Japanese never really used wood or bamboo of any sorts in their armor. Pre-Samurai? Probably, but the laquered armor they so often used probably confused you. They used lamellar, mail, and other types of armor like any other culture. It's just that the harsh weather conditions in Japan had them laquer their armor to the point it looked 'wooden'. Just throwing this out for ya. No offense.
@pypy1986820
@pypy1986820 5 лет назад

There's countless variations of Japanese mail armor, so it may be a bit difficult. If Japanese did more experimentation than Western Europeans in certain areas, mail armor was one of them. There's also Kikko brigandine, which is another interesting form of armor.

Nice experiments. Beside the protection against the guns, the transition from O-yoroi to Tosei Gusoku required the improvement in a thin metal plate fabrication. Italy and Europe are advanced in the metal forging, and by the end of 16th century, the rolling mill was already used practically. But at that time, around 1400, in Japan, a thin metal plate was made by the repeating of heating and hitting by a hammer. I guess the Portuguese and the Spanish brought some of the advanced European manufacturing methods and the better metal with the exility.

I'd love to see you do a combat test video with practice swords. It would be interesting to see in real terms the kind of protection the armour could offer against strikes, and how easy or not it would be to attack the weak points in the armour against a combatant who is defending himself, with both combatants using the techniques of the period. Also, I want to know what it actually feels like to receive a strike in such armour and to get an idea how much protection it actually provides.

Absolutely love both armour sets. I like the clothes which your wear underneath the 14th century set, though for the armour itself I still like 16th century more. It just seems more practical, especially due to the pauldrons of the 14th century, which were probably meant for arrow protection, if I am not wrong. However, the 16th century armour was plate, so arrows wouldn't penetrate anyway, especially if shot out of yumi. The masks are truly somewhat threatning and terrifying! You'd think we people from 21th century wouldn't be afraid of such things, but whilst wearing a mask you were twice as imposing, mate!

correct me if I'm wrong but when a samurai sits they typically do it with their right leg in front. this is so that when they step out of the seated position with the left leg back allows the sword to be easier and quicker to draw. stepping with the right leg in the correct posture allow allows you to stand up without any stumble and with a swift movement. (this came from my traditional jiujutsu training. there might be videos on the proper movement that I tried to describe.)

i have to ask; is the shoulder protection on both armors supposed to be positioned more towards the back rather then staying relatively to the side?

The way those helmets shadow your eyes is pretty intimidating looking.

Absolutely viable that a warrior of a less wealthy family would wear the 100 year old armor of his grandfather that is slightly cheaper produced than his fellow from a more rich house.

It seems like the tosei gosaku gives you more shoulder mobility. How is the 1400 armor different than o-yoroi? Overall great video as usual!

I looked on the Iron Mountain Website for DA401 the set I liked best and it wasn't listed anywhere!?! I also visited the Australia distributor of Iron Mountain Armour and was not able to find it listed. So would someone please kindly point me to where find more about this particular armour, its availability and price?

I actually have a suggestion, would it be possible for you to make a video on bloodlines, for example I've always been told by family I'm of Dutch, jew, Irish, and German but mostly Dutch and jew(note I'm not Jewish myself) . However it's hard to pinpoint where exactly I come from as far as blood goes am I related to the legion, am I of Germanic origin, or something else, I simply don't know. Only reason I'm asking is because I'm 18 and have been studying several medieval texts and writings on the medieval period along with training with various weapons from those times, specifically weapons of the crusaders as well as the roman legion and the bronze age. Reason for this is I've always been so fascinated with weapons and Armour and so far you and skallgrimage (forgive me for my misspelling) have helped me through my research and I thank you for that, but if you could do a example of the Dutch or jew origins that would be great and would give me a idea of what weapons I should be studying based on my bloodline (or possible bloodline) thank you.

How did southern Italy and Sicily contribute to the renaissance? It seems like the renaissance only occurred in northern and central Italy.
