They really need to move the Oakland International Airport to Sacramento for three years and then move it to Las Vegas after that. Problem solved!

Maybe Oakland should worry more about cleaning up their city. Crime is so bad, no one wants to stay at a hotel near the airport. They just lost In n Out and the As. A name change isn't their problem.

I'm flying to Oakland next week on Southwest to see an A's game. They put your destination city's picture in the header on your itinerary page. For Oakland it's a picture of San Francisco. Also, if you don't know that Oakland is across from San Francisco you should go back to 5th grade geography no matter where you are from.

Changing the name of the Oakland airport to San Francisco Bay seems like a scam to me. If you are trying to get to the city of San Francisco or anywhere on the peninsula your going to want to fly in to SFO not Oakland airport. And if you are trying to get to the city of San Francisco or somewhere on the peninsula and you fly in to Oakland you are going to be really upset when you realize how much more expensive its going to be and how much more time its going to take you to get to the city or somewhere on the peninsula from Oakland then if you had flown in to SFO.

I don't feel this has anything at all to do with geography, if it was, they'd tack the "SF BAY" part on the END of the name not at the beginning. They want to use subterfuge to get potential SFO customers to their airport, no one comes to San Francisco because it's "where San Francisco Bay is" unless they're going to a boat race or something. Also, part of me thinks they want to get as far away from the name "Oakland" as possible as Oakland does get a lot of negative press in the news, I feel this is along the same lines as "South Central LA" changing it's name to "South Los Angeles" after yet another year of winning the title of murder capital of the world. Hopefully other airports don't agree to this, and when you look up at an airport destination board with it's limited character space they will still say OAKLAND instead of SAN FRANCISCO B so some poor guy who wants to go to San Francisco doesn't end up at the wrong gate where a SFBOIA flight is going.

My initial thought was how this name change was an insult to the city of Oakland. I am surprised that the name change is being framed as a positive for Oakland!!

I was told that Herb Cain said that the only thing Oakland has that SF doesn't is a view of SF. Perhaps OAK is simply trying to fulfill Herb Cain's prophesy.

LOL. Oaktown is a nationally known $hithole. Our company’s travel website has a huge warning about traveling through there, going as far as to say there is an exception to the rule that rental car refuel charges are allowed there due to safety concerns with stopping at gas stations there. This is the only place in the world the travel site mentions, not even the middle east, Korea or Russia is mentioned as a dangerous place, just the $hithole.

When you have a trademark, legally, you have to defend it. So, SFO has to sue. It is very disingenuous of Oakland to do this.

For years when I travelled to San Francisco, I flew into Oakland for convenience sake. Once they extended BART into the terminal at SFO however, it became my go to airport.

As an international travellor who uses and likes San Francisco International, I would be really ticked off if I booked a flight to what appeared to be San Francisco airport, only to discover I was in Oakland and I have to make an International flight booked from the real San Francisco airport. In their stated aim of increasing passenger numbers b y using the name San Francisco it appears that misleading people is their intent.

Airport names are so weird to me. We recently changed from McCarran to Harry Reid and it’s taking years and costing millions. Or you know it could just been called Las Vegas International Airport from the beginning… just name the airport after the cities and/or region! Oakland Bay Area International Airport Boom that easy.

OAK has been making a play to draw traffic/landing fees away from SFO for some years. SFO is feeling threatened and as usual it comes down to MONEY.

I fly OAK almost everytime because SouthWest is my go to airline but the name change due to some inferiority complex is pathetic. They worried about Oakland crime stigma hence the name change ... poor folks! How about "Bay Area Oakland Internation Airport" if you want to have the Bay attached to your name so much?

Jesus...let Oakland have an identity. They are having their baseball team stolen from them. Now the airport name. This is silly. But on a serious note, maybe the transportation and travel commission of Oakland needs to do something to get the East Bay area and specifically Oakland more attractive to people coming into the area for the first time. I grew up in Tracy as a kid in the 80s and the joke forever was, "hey go to SF for a nice day but NEVER find yourself in Oakland...it's dangerous...it's not nice..." and that's all we knew. Something has to give. Something has to change in the area to make it seem more attractive to tourists. Losing a baseball team doesn't help. But the name change of the airport is dumb. I can't get behind that at all. It will become confusing. It's like me coming out there to open up a hamburger stand and call it Out And In Hamburgers. No dice. Do better, Oakland.

They could always do like Sea-Tac, Seattle International Airport,which is between Seattle & Tacoma, & go with something like Oak-Bay, or Oak-SFB as the common names, and have the full name be like Oakland San Francisco Bay Area International. Just a suggestion.

This reminds me of a pro baseball team changing their name to piggyback on the marketing of another MLB team. I'm talking about you, "Anaheim Angels of Los Angeles".

Oakland is absolutely desperate, as businesses (e.g., Raiders, Warriors, soon A's) are closing and moving out due to out of control crimes and business-hostile environment there. But to pretend to be some-one else and to confuse travelers are definitely the wrong solution for the problems they are facing.

Oakland doesn’t have international flights and it’s a mostly domestic operation so residents of the bay may know it is located in the East Bay but for foreigners it will just confuse the hell out of people. Even in the US here it will just confuse travelers arriving into and leaving San Francisco the main city. Oakland is not SF and it’s been Oakland for as long as I was born. They’re trying to ride on the cocktails of SFO reputation and influence. Both airports are run separately and not in a group or administer together.

Oakland International Airport is under the management of the Port of Oakland. In contrast, San Francisco International Airport and the Port of San Francisco are two totally separate departments, each with its own commission, under the City and County of San Francisco. The Port of San Francisco was at one time a state-run agency under the California Board of State Harbor Commissioners before all authority, jurisdiction, and control of the Port was transferred over to the City and County of San Francisco in 1968.

If they go through with the name change the port should rename itself for consistency; The Port of San Francisco Bay Area, Oakland. 😂

If they try and use SF in the airport name I think they get sued by the City. Oakland and SF are two totally different cities. Oakland is trying to get the Benoit of a bigger city name like San Francisco. They know people don’t typically fly into Oakland unless they are local and really now the area. People coming into the Bay Area generally go through SF. Fog delays are the only reason to go through Oakland if you are local.

Its so unacceptable of OAK and I hope SF does sue. People know the difference and know the closeness of this airport to SF; just like people know Dulles International Airport and Ronald Reagan Airport serves DC and surrounding areas. Manchester, NH airport did something similar about 20+ years ago. Renamed their airport to Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. It worked for a while, but Boston has since added more cities to fly to and has taken business away from MHT. Careful what you wish for there OAK....

"San Francisco bay OAKLAND" sounds more like the one that is abbreviated as "SFO" rather than "San Francisco International".... Yes, this isn't how airport codes work... but this is what people will think, especially if they don't fly to the area much.

I’m from Houston, we have George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and William P. Hobby (HOU) airports. The city is not in the name and some people still end up at the wrong airport.

Simple solution: Oakland/San Francisco Bay International Airport

I was stationed in the north bay in the 80s, OAK was the prefered airport. If we needed a direct or nonstop, SFO was pretty much the only choice. If we pissed off the guys making the travel arrangements, we went to SFO in the mid AM or late afternoon for any flight.

Not even their own airport wants anything to do with being connected to anything Oakland!

If people are not smart enough to open google maps or apple maps to see where OAK is located before buying their ticket, then that’s on them. OAK is the La Guardia of the Bay Area. What’s next, Long Beach will be South LA? Burbank will be North LA?

Not much in common between Auckland and Oakland, but I know of more than one set of luggage that was bound for one and ended up in the other. Still, if you ended up in Oakland instead of SFO, would you really be inconvenienced? SFO is no more in SF than OAK is in Oakland and the BART trip is roughly the same Still, is this the best Oakland can do?

As someone that once went towards sfo when my plane ticket was from Oakland... With the current name... I have some major quelms about this change. (I had never flown out of Oakland prior, but was taking a flight with some friends so just forgot the ticket was from Oakland and didn't check. I realized on the Bart at daly city, switched and made it to my flight barely in time.)

Makes more sense than when Manchester, MHT, changed their name to Manchester Boston. Oakland is a lot closer to San Francisco then Manchester is to Boston. In fact the distance from OAK to Fisherman's Wharf is only 4 miles more than SFO to Fisherman's Wharf.

I drove a friend to Oakland international, I never want to drive there again, road rages, speeding cars, red light violations, cars without plate numbers (I counted at least 5), lawlessness to the highest level. No police anywhere! Shame of this city, so embarrassing for California, I hate that place. Never again. I feel so unsafe there. 🤬🤬🤬

Huh ... I side with SFO ... it would be misleading to people unfamiliar with the "Bay Area" ... Oakland needs to come up with a better name or marketing strategy to promote OAK airport. If Oakland wants to increase internet traffic and not ride the shirt tails of San Francisco ... use the word "Bay Area" in their name. I just typed in Bay Area in a search and first thing on the list was SF Bay Area which also showed Oakland and San Jose.

When one looks at Washington DC area airports one gets: Dulles, Washington National Airport, and BWI (Baltimore Washington International). Baltimore used to be called Baltimore Friendship or just Baltimore airport. The Baltimore airport group changed the name to let travelers know that this is a joint area. Also hyped up it was easier to get through than Washington National or Dulles. However, notice they kept it as Baltimore-Washington and not Washington-Baltimore. So, there isn't any confusion for travelers.

As a traveler I don't avoid OAK because of its location, I avoid Oakland because of the area surrounding the airport makes me feel unsafe. You cant stop for food or refill your gas without being approached by beggars, and car thefts at the 7-11 and nearby Pollo Loco are a real thing.The name change to drop Oakland from the name is because they are embarrassed at what they have become, and instead of addressing it, they want to change the name.... so how about "Bay Area Skyport" or something unique... wanna do something really unique? put a high speed rail between them , so pax can get from one airport to the other super-quick.

I've been going back and forth on this in my mind. On the one hand, having 2 airport start with "San Francisco" could be confusing, at least at first. But after a few years people will get used to it. Then it will be no more confusing than some other locations with a similar set up. Places like London, which has London City, and London Stansted airports (and others). Even though when searching, the first one to show up and the one most people fly into is Heathrow. As far as the Lawsuit? Good luck with that SFO. 😆
