The appeal of Shannon is he’s one of us, a fan. Before RU-vid and social media, we never got a fan’s perspective. Hockey media is filled with either former pro’s or professional journalists, they provided important perspectives. Former pro’s shows us what’s happening on the ground level, journalists show the 30,000 ft level. Guys like Shannon shows what us on the outside are thinking

When worlds collide

San Jose had a pretty good run (for a torn-down team) after that woeful start. Then opponents started taking them seriously and dat was dat. When opponents forget that any team at any time can give you a whuppin’ in this here league, SJ will win some more. But they’ll be in the running for Celebrini or Hootenany or whoever the balance of this season.

As an Avs fan but a hockey fan in general, I always liked the Sharks and started watching The Hockey Guy during the 2019 Cup Finals. This is a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. The Sharks also have some of the best broadcasters in the league.

Shannon is the hardest working amateur in hockey, he gives insight that the network guys aren't going to cover, and just seems like the most sincere person in the world. And Brodie, if you are going to bring more guests on, you bring in Dan Boyle, see if he'll come on here. You did a Sharks broadcast from his house a couple years ago, I'm pretty sure the game went terribly but it didn't matter because the intermissions were hilarious; he seemed like he was having so much fun having you over there. I remember vividly him teaching you how long to pour Tito's into a Moscow Mule: "Count to four....one...two...three...four...four...four...four...." We were pretty sure you were worried you'd get in trouble for even taking a sip on air because you looked so awkward and kept politely refusing when he'd offer to make you a drink, but it was fun and entertaining.

Two of my favorite Tubers. Yeah, Shannon hit it square on the head. You've gotta look through and past statistics when breaking down a team like the Sharks. Example. Mackenzie Blackwood is a top notch goaltender. You look at his won/loss record and he loses a lot of games. But so does his team. Then you look at his save percentage - the last time I looked it was somewhere around .900 - who does that on a team like this? But the eyeball test is the clincher. He goes butterfly like he's made out of rubber. He doesn't panic on breakaways. He stays home and takes care of business. Even the games where I have seen him get absolutely shelled, I've had mad respect for him...This team is laden with other players like him. Give them time to gel together, have patience, and they'll end up with a pretty good team...Great interview guys!...

2:35 As a Devils fan I knew the Sharks were getting good players in Z, Blackwood and Okhotiuk. But I have to push back on the Timo bashing. He got off to a slow start this season but has been battling injuries. He had some bursts of really good play when he was healthy. He's also on a team with 14 guys in double digit points and 4 guys with double digits in goals and nearly every forward on the team has at 5 goals or more. The whole Devils roster has to share the puck. Z has played really well on the Sharks but other than him, only ONE player (Hertl) has 10+ goals. It's unrealistic to expect Timo to have as many goals as previous years, when his role isn't being one of the only goal scorers anymore.

As a Sens fan who just watched the toughest timeframe of Senators hockey in decades (late-2018 to 2021), these Sharks have some good pieces to build on. Add a strong Draft Day haul within the next few years, coupled with a few good trades, and they could surprise a lot of people. Curious as to whether or not Hertl and Couture will be part of the solution, though. As for this year, I am hoping that their veterans on expiring contracts will perform well heading into February. In turn, that might increase their trade value. In turn, that might lead to promising prospects when you deal said veterans elsewhere.

THG has more hockey knowledge and analysis than any guy on tv right now.
