Russia has a self sustaining economic model, they produce enough food and fuel that they do no need anyone else. They also have a GDP surplus which most other countries do not. The USA fot example has something like a 14% deficit.

Actually we were very close to direct military involvement and did get involved to combat the extremists that moved in. The difference is Ukraine is fighting an external aggressor, Syria is a civil war so much more difficult to influence (see Libya where we did get involved).

If you listen to their public addresses, the range of topics covered, the depth of knowledge, their understanding of international law and the intellectual level they communicate on they make most western leaders look like circus clowns or shady dealers of one sort or another. Putin has his faults but they are not as apparent or numerous as many western leaders that have failed us so consistently and been involved in numerous illegal wars and economic sanctions.
