Warrel Dane, perhaps the most gifted voice of metal. He owned every octave available...no one could go as low then as high as quickly and with such skill as Warrel, RIP metal god.
I used to run into this dude before the show's when my wife and i lived in Denver. Fucker was hilarious and was so down to earth. Miss him so much. We were going to see the show the year he died. 😢
@@edwardsantamauro8904 I would take it that far, and of course he would not say he was the best that would make him a gloating fool. Warrel was unique once his voice is audible you know it is him that is the true sign of greatness.
@@rockermanpre747 have you heard of King Diamond from Mercyful Fate, Steve Grimmett from Grim Reaper, David Defeis from Virgin Steele or Valeriy Kipelov ex Aria?
@@Assimilator702 your reply on a comment is just trendy hipster BS . You sir are the High Lord of the Troll's Nest . Just a Buzzard with ruffled feathers that never will learn to fly
@@Sloth53 Right on!! Good time eh \m/\m/ Everytime i saw Wally walking around in Seattle in the bar scene in the 90's, he remembered me, and was never too busy or upstuck to bs and drink some beers. Totally on the level human being.
@@chickenbeek they were the first live band that I've ever seen, opened for Megadeth/Testament/Flotsam and Jetsam. And they were the best live band of the festival. Aboslutely awesome stuff.
Always wondered why Sanctuary was so underrated. Killer music, killer lyrics. But seeing this masterpiece has more than 1 million views gives me hope. RIP Warrel Dane...
Honestly, this band should have been huge back in the day. On the bright side, after they broke up, we got Nevermore. Which were a pretty damn good band as well...
When modern listeners think the '80s was ignorant bliss, there was a metric ton of awareness represented in the metal genre. You could point them to Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime, Ozzy's Ultimate Sin, Megadeth's So Far ..., and on and on. This particular hidden gem always seems prescient. Fantastic record.
I was getting into the more extreme stuff when this album came out. Was completely blown away by it - and so were my friends who were on the same path that I was.
There was just far more music produced in the 80's, compared to previous decades, since technology had advanced to the point that it was getting easier to record and mix music. But that also means you had to do more sifting to find the good stuff.
Its a shame these guys disbanded. This whole album was well crafted, no bullshit stuff. I loved this album for years as a kid, and then I just bought it on vinyl recently, and was amazed how awesome it still sounds. Old school metal is so timeless.
They reformed for The Year the Sun Died and are about to embark on a tour in Europe with Joseph Michael singing. A new lp is in the works as well. It will be amazing.
@@michaelmclaughlin6440 That's great news man, thanks for sharing! I confirmed they are indeed touring this and next year, any chance for a tour in the states you think? Also, how did you find out about a new lp in the making? I couldn't find anything on that, yet.
@@markbirdsong8808Dude. Yeah, Nevermore was great and all, but Sanctuary puts boots on em. Sanctuary is one of the most underrated Metal bands ever. The guy was right, Sanctuary split up too soon, 3 album isn't enough, when THIS WAS THEIR PRODUCT! WARELL DANE IT HIS FINEST. Yes, he went out with Nevermore, and he was masterful there. There was a big shift in Dane between Sanctuary and Nevermore, it shows in the lyrics. Sanctuary kicked ass, I SO WISH I could've seen them back in early 90s, when I was freaking 5 years old lol.
I have rarely if ever made a comment on RU-vid but I've been reading these comments for like 30 minutes and I can't believe no one has mentioned how insanely killer Warrel's hair was! All respect first and foremost to the musicianship- I used to listen to these guys back in the day but dude had the baddest ass, longest hair in Metal!! (I just had to get that out)
*snort* "Tight! Tight! Tight!!" Right about the time this was released, I was ditching my junior high school obsession with metal, and getting way more into punk and hardcore. However, it seems to become clearer and clearer to me that even though those genres were just stylistically different enough, the aggression and ethos were often similar enough to dovetail nicely. The artistry and talent on this track are blowing my mind! Repeat watch/listen.
RIP Dane you were a legend and one hell of a dude thanks for helping string my guitar back in 97!!!! This song tear but the last 30 seconds is fucking intense
Although Warrel Dane is best known in the metal world for his haunting voice and amazing octave range, his lyrical talent was incredibly unique. The words are highly intelligent, painful and true, satisfyingly intense and oddly mystical. He was a massive inspiration to me and I am very saddened to hear he is gone.
@@carlsalazar4490 This song is from Into the Mirror Black which is a masterpiece in my opinion. Refuge Denied was really good too. Although they later reunited and released a third album those are from the classic era.
Totally agree! That was part of what I meant singing is one part of it matching the lyrics to the song PLUS constructing the vocal parts to match it is a real gift. Anyone can ride out on a cycle yelling they are hell bent for leather.
Lol I went to HS with Lenny. IIRC in my Sr. year he was a soph and had a broken leg so he didn't suit for PE. He would sit in the locker room and play his guitar. The jocks talked shit about him but he always had the chicks around. Last time I saw him was at his practice place. He had this big ware house with a stage set up and everything. Shit looked like he was going places. I went to watch rehearsal with a buddy. There was supposed to be a party later but we couldn't find it. My buddy spun out his Nova and curbed the left side, totaling the front axle. Both of us moved out of state within a month. About a yr later I'm sitting on the shitter in the morning, before going off to my menial job at a sugar plant in buttfuck WY. I picked up a Kerrang...or some other metal mag my girlfriend had brought over....and there was Lenny lmao. A fucking rock star. Fuck my life. Well....that's my story and I'm sticking to it.. Lenny....if you ever do happen to read these comments I was the shitty guitar player that used to hang with Marty Hullin and Larry Lamascus. Glad to see you made it big. Good luck in the future. Go RHS! Class of 81 peace
I wouldn't call being in Sanctuary making it big. I mean they should have been bigger, but less talented bands were more popular, but somehow they never took off or lasted. American metal bands that are much more successful than them still have to work side jobs to make it in life.
Currently 45 and life long metal head having bought this along with their 1st album when they came out...if I correctly recall it was Dave Mustaine that sorta "discovered" this band and got them the promotion and recognition which led to them being signed. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but that is how I remember it....been some years now lol. Still love it!!
You have no idea how true that statement is brother. Wally was far beyond anything I coukd wrap my head around.i remember back way back I ran into him at Starbucks and. I saT down and I think he was talking about aliens and basicly being the wally I knew. mr baker basicly predicted a few things he told me that sanctuary would be back someday (this is when DNB came out) and at a later time after a few cold refreahments he basicly told me that there was gonna be a attack on our country and it was going be catastrophe enough so that it woukd effect every life every person that had a ounce of love in there heart. There wpuld be many deaths and death woukd come from above ( im a idiot so he could be quoteing something by clint eastwood and I wouldnt have know) and I'm still waiting for the 3rd that i remember (cuz there were lots) I ran into Him at Kerry Park in seattle university district beautiful night warm summer evening/ night and he was looking up and hes said "ok fuc&ers there on there way brace urself dude. its a matter of time before they come" so I knew what he ment but was he just f'in with me or am I gonns get ready to pull a doomsday prepper shelter in the middle of tbe back yard in the Wallingford neighborhood? my yard is 10x10 squared. I said fuk it im just gonna let them catch me cuz I'm screwed. he laughed and said it wont hurt u. You wont even realize it.u wont even know before ur there.you need to Free your mind open it and dont limit yourself to thinking like s human. So yea Timothy Leary was an AMAZING prophet himself I freed my mind alright We love you wally baker aka warrel dane ill see u someday my friend RIP
amen very much was a prophet.he always when i seen him always gave me great advise ohh by the way wally believed in aliens and its said that they will be making there presence felt in 2029 per wally
Great band...I have my name on the back of the Gallows album. Used to give the band airplay in NJ on my old college radio station..WMSC...RIP Warel and Andrey
I was in Best Buy one day and I was looking at the CD's to see if there was anything worth buying, I was looking at all of them when a certain album cover caught my attention, I picked it up and it was Sanctuary's "The Year The Sun Died", I had never heard of Sanctuary before but I just thought the album cover looked cool, so I bought it and now I'm so glad I did, Sanctuary is such a kickass band and I hope to see them live soon.
Welcome to great metal, I found Refuge Denied when it was released in the mid 80's as I am old lol and was hooked. Dave Mustaine of Megadeth produced their first opus. Sanctuary lives on as Lenny Rutledge recruited Joseph Michael on vocals, he is not Warrel but has a great voice.
That was me exactly back in the late 90s but the band was Snot. It was before they were even on Ozzfest, I just thought the album cover looked interesting so I bought it haha Great album.
RIP BATTLE ANGEL! (Warrel Dane) Taken way to early from us but his music will live forever. If you can read this Dane somehow... Your Music had a big impact in my life and my journey as a young musician. Thank You for all your hard work! Finish up that second solo record in metal heaven for us will ya.. I will be looking forward to it and say hi to Dio for us.
One of the greatest albums no one has ever heard of. Just amazing on every level. I'm so happy I saw them tour off of this album in a little club. Best concert I've ever seen because I was so into them at the time
I was like 3 years old when they were touring off of Into The Mirror Black... To have been able to have seen THIS tour here is PRICELESS to me. Sanctuary was amazing. Even that word still seems short of what they truly were. We all got screwed from the Record Company when they basically had a hand in why Sanctuary disbanded, after only 2 Studio Albums. Crazy man! I didn't care much for the album they put out when they reformed in, I think 2007, The Year The Sun Died. It has a few songs that have grown on me, but still, a far cry from Into The Mirror Black. I am , however, excited to hear their newest album, which should drop soon. New Vocalist, brought in Chris Broderick (Legendary Metal Guitarist). Let's see what the Future Holds, as Warell said himself, in Future Tense 😬
Everytime I hear the opening I go back to the same time and place. 2001 in my Mazda mx6 I just got and I was in the air force stationed at Canon afb new mexico. Bought the cd this was on in a pawn shop for like 50 cents and had never heard it before. It's crazy the specific memories songs can bring back. I remember the weather and everything from that specific moment first hearing this 20 years ago
The music to this song is unforgettable. The vocals are in a class all on their own . Just an epic track !! I remember watching this on headbanger's ball. I'd stay up just to catch napalm death or morbid angel. And then this came on and I was hooked.
Rest in Rock Metal Heaven Sir Warrel Dane !!! Thanks For your Awesome Singing,Amazing Music and Great Lyrics in the first Sanctuary times, Nevermore years and the the last Sanctuary project !!! Forever in my Soul !!!
You know that moment when you realize you just clicked on a video title you didn't recognize and then hear a song you loved that you taped from somewhere back in the 80's/90's but didn't know the band name...,,yeah :)
SAME THING!!!! I knew I heard of the band. For some reason I thought they were a Christian metal band. Anyway, I played this and thought "I remember this!!!!" Love it!!!
This man was one of my absolute idols. This man shouldn't have died so soon. I mean, Sanctuary was on the rise. Nevermore was in the talks. His (would be) new solo album was on the very making. It was gonna be called "Shadow Work", and he himself promised it'd be one of the heaviest things he'd ever recorded. Instead, Sanctuary is now on a limbo. His new solo album (if anything) is gonna be released only with guests vocalists filling in for him. And what's worse: Nevermore is... Never more. So, again: this man shouldn't have died so soon. Goddammit. Rest in peace, Warrel. You will NEVER, ever, be forgotten.
Actually the New Warrel Dane Album is over 40 minutes that his Vocals are on 100% The album was supposed to be over 80-90 minutes in length, and what you hear on the album is what Warrel Dane completed. Again the album is him singing 100% just cut short because he passed away during more songs done. Remember to always search the web and read what the artists that worked with him confirmed before posting crap and gossip on any social media site. His work is worthy and the best in songwriting ever in Music.
IAN i feel ya bro i miss him i miss his way of thinking and his opinion of things his story he had to tell his love for his friends and his love for his animals he is and will always be a idol and a friend to me rip wally baker u are missed every day every second every breath of air is a moment i miss my friend
Revisted "Into the Mirror Black" a couple days ago after years of absence. Oh how i had forgotten how good this album is. It transcends time and space....
