The Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of San Luca, Bologna (Italy) captured by drone with its panorama from the Colle della Guardia towards the city and the Bolognese plain on a beautiful summer's day.
The Sanctuary Madonna di San Luca is one of the symbols of the city of Bologna, a basilica dominated by the Baroque style, dedicated to the Catholic Marian cult, completed in its current appearance on 25 March 1765, after 42 years of work. The dome, facade and external side tribunes were completed by Giovanni Giacomo Dotti in 1774, based on drawings left by his father. The basilica can be reached from Porta Saragozza through a long and characteristic porticoed street, which crosses Via Saragozza with the monumental Arco del Meloncello (1732) and then climbs steeply up to the sanctuary.
The portico of San Luca is the longest portico in the world, measuring 3,796 metres and consisting of 666 arches and 489 steps, connecting the city centre to the basilica.
The history of the sanctuary is linked to the icon of the Virgin and Child known as 'di San Luca' kept inside, which gave rise to the legend of the foundation of the sanctuary itself and determined its fortune over the centuries, making it a pilgrimage destination. Some sources speak of a hermitage located on the Colle della Guardia as early as 1100, in which a certain hermit Euthymius had settled, who had come from Constantinople bringing with him a cedar table on which an image of the Virgin Mary was painted in the ancient Byzantine style.
From 1931 to 1976, a panoramic cable car, later decommissioned, made it possible to reach the shrine via the lower terminus, which was located near today's local public transport cable car stop.
Let us remember that there is no other city in the world that has as many porticos as Bologna: all together the porticos measure almost 40 kilometres in length in the historic centre alone, and reach 62 km counting those outside the centre.
Due to their artistic and cultural significance, Bologna's porticos will become a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 28 July 2021.
