This short clip shows compressed air being used to "blow" dray coarse sand in front of the trains wheels. Sand is used on many units to aid taking power/braking during times of low adhesion.
On this unit, sand can be applied manually using the sander button in the driving cab or applied automatically if the brake is placed in emergency.

I had to use sand by hand once, as a Shunter at Pz. The 08s sand box’s were so very damp due to travelling through the wash plant 12 times per shift, and we had to clear No 4 for the Postal which was due in 15 mins, but the Pilot was slipping tailing the Plymouth vans which arrived at around 05.45, so I lifted the sand box cover and sprinkled damp sand on one rail in front of the wheels and it worked easily. That was around 1981

That's a great example of being practical and using some common sense to overcome a problem. The technology hasn't really changed much since then! Although, there are some hi tech systems at various stages of trials. I've always been a big fan of KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid - the simpler a system or process is, the less there is to go wrong 👍
