Professional restorer Rodney Keyser demonstrates the most efficient method we've come across to date for sanding rounded and or difficult profiles on wood furniture such as carvings, crevices, turned legs, moldings, claw feet, etc. This is an update to our previous videos on this subject.

Would they be good for sanding kitchen chairs with spindles? I am looking for something that can sand the spindles or tight places.

So what DO you recommend using for a fast and efficient removal of varnish/laquer finish prior to using these on the raw wood?

Do you have to strip the furniture before using the discs? If so, how do you do that on highly carved furniture? Thank you.

Have you heard of/used Surfprep sanders before? If so, what did/do you think of it?

I have heard of surf prep, and I hear great things except they are pricey. To date, I have not used one but I will likely purchase one soon to test. Very good Sanders from what I hear.

Great video. Both bristle sets are sold in ten packs. This my first attempt at finishing a bedroom set with carvings. Just wondering if you can find kits with less amounts of bristles. Any help would greatly appreciated for this beginner. Thanks

I have wood that is painted with green gloss paint. I want to repaint the wood. Would this be good to prep the surface before I repaint?

Hello, I am in the middle of refinishing a huge carved Honduran mahogany door and entranceway with 30 years of neglect and caked on poly/lacquor, wax sticks, etc in the grooves. I have gone through countless strippers only to have to peel it out of the wood and reveal the same stained wood. It has been weeks and it has to be done hung because of a sensitive wire to an 80s electric door knob the homeowner does not want removed. I’m going insane. I’ve even “dremeled” the carvings out to some extent. However, it’s been a week and I’m still not done one side. I can’t charge more than a new door but that is what it’s taking me. The discs you talk about seem great, but I can’t find them besides from a random reseller with crazy prices who has 1 in stock. Dremel makes smaller ones, but I have literally gone through 43 in 1 panel, 12 panels in door it eats them away so quickly. I gave 3M the part number from your last video and they said they still make it but I had my assistant looking into it as well and she said 3M sells them under the Scotch Brite name. Fastenal sells the yellow discs in like a case of 800, but can’t find the green or the mandral. What’s going on with these? Please help save my sanity.

Ah, just watched this video and heard you talk about the finish removal. What would you recommend using instead? I found they worked, just can’t find the larger ones you describe besides a random seller for like $180 for 10; no mandrel, etc...

I can't really speak to their availability or price, but it would appear that some re sellers are price gouging. Pehaps I'll consider buying them in bulk and offering them in small quantities? Check Ebay.

Rody Rod Rod, I gave you a thumbs up and appreciate the hell out of your expertise and the information you share. But just as I'm sure you would not stand there quietly while I destroyed a valuable piece of furniture with a refinishing technique that was, WRONG! I would offer you (unsolicited) a word of constructive criticism. I've watched two of your 3M bristle disc videos and what I get is 5 lbs of potatos in a 20 lb sack. Redundant. You don't need to repeat, paraphrase, and review every little detail. Lose the "hemming" and "hawing" saying "ah" and "eh" while speaking. Details are great and those fine ones that you possess are gold. I'm thinking why is he explaining ( and more than once ) the, goes without saying, need to tighten screw into mandrel. DOH! Was wondering why you didn't mention RPM? What's with the portrait format video? Both those videos should of been a good 20 minutes packed with that gold that I mentioned. I get that you're not as coordinated with these tools as with your woodworking tools. A good solid piece of old furniture made from black walnut by some master craftsman in need of some polish. Wow, I sure do carry on, huh.

This was good criticism Daryyl, and made me laugh. If you watch the past half dozen videos I made, you will notice I changed format and now predominantly use voice over. It allows for a script or a double take if I say something incorrectly. I was once an inexperienced and raw furniture restorer. I made mistakes and had to learn from them. The same applies here. The info in the older videos is great because it's what I do, the other aspects showed my inexperience on the filming end. I've come a long way, and will continue to improve with each video I make. Thanks for watching !!

@@FurnitureRefinishingStudio can you please give us an update on what RPM we need for this. Are their any dremel alternatives?
@FurnitureRefinishingStudio
@FurnitureRefinishingStudio 3 года назад
The rpm would vary depending on factors such as the hardness/softness of the wood. There are no substitutes or dremel alternatives unfortunately.
