Has anyone tried these discs? I found them on Amazon but the reviews were dismal. I have a cabinet with very detailed carvings on the doors and drawer fronts that I would love to use this technique on. Thank you.
Thank you! I just scored an awesome Amish corner curio with the same and I want to put simple pine cone/bear knobs on it but after unscrewing the knob realized it's affixed by tiny nails and I wasn't sure of a good way to do this. I won't attempt it until the knobs come in, but thank you for showing! I did notice some scratching under the plate- was that from the chisel? Or did they affix the plate to hide that scratch originally.... I have unfinished stained wood that I can't scratch because I will not be sanding it. Thank you!
It's 2024! I'm so happy that you gave the bonus tip before I started. I really don't know if I have brass or plating on my hardware. But I know it's over 50 years old.😮😮
I have a circe stain on the top of the wood case of an 80 yr old antique radio. Probably try the iron method as I must maintain the original look of crackled and worn finish of the redt of the pirce. The thinner etc method is good for making things look like new as it sort of disolves and redistributes the finish 11:14 in
I cleaned the brass hardware on my mother newly purchased antique chest of drawers. I watched a few videos and this worked like magic! Got all those nooks and crannies with very little effort. Fished it off with w/ dawn power cleaner and a sponge to remove the oily residue from the tarnish. I did 14 in 45 minutes. Impressive!
Thanks so much for a great video and links!! I do a lot of restoration work for resale and have avoided pieces that were missing detail in the past. Following your steps and hopefully replacing the missing half of my buffet foot.
What do you do when the screws AREN’T in the back and the handle prevents you from twisting the screws which appear to be in the front? Trying to keep from removing the very front piece of my dresser drawer front that appears to be nailed to the drawer frame. Never mind, seeing others asked 7 years ago with no answer.
Thanks for vdo. I am wondering if you can give me some advise. We have weather front door with a lot of sun weathered so part that not protect by storm door were dried. We used sunsheild from Howard and it does look better. However, we can’t bring the shine back like the other part where we polyurethane in the past. So any recommendation for product to use on top of sunsheild wax?
Excellent Advice, Thanks Very Much! I was wondering🤔Using your same vinegar technique- If Someone has arthritis, could you or anyone recommend a type of steel wool wheel that could be attached to a drill that would work just as well? Thanks👍😉🇨🇦
Every time I boil with 50/50 vinegar and water, I wind up left with a weird white residue showing up in the grooves after I’ve polished the piece! It seems to pretty much ruin it as it comes back when I wipe it off. Do you have any ideas? If so I’d appreciate it! Thanks :)
I'm working on our dinning room chairs, all of them are lose from kids leaning back. Every single joint has 2 nails in it with very little glue...one chair wound up with 3 broken pieces. My wife started freaking out when she heard the cracks. She's like do you really have to take them all the way apart, you can't just smear a little glue in the space and squeeze it back. Never buying chairs from that company again....uggghhhh
No mention of a preconditioner? I have sanded down mine to the raw wood which I believe is birch. It should preconditioner be included in this process?
Wonderful Video! I have so much of this stuff and I've been trying to find people who will 3D print missing pieces, but it's soooooooo much more work to 3D print antique parts than it would be to do this! Thank you !!!
I actually do the very same method, only using epoxy for adhesive on both glue-ups. I've always felt that end-grain really needs the epoxy, although the CA is a good alternative!
I tested this out on a piece and it dried cloudy/foggy. I’m guessing this is due to humidity in Texas. Does this mean I need to wait until fall\winter to spray my piece? Is there an ideal humidity level % I can wait for? Thanks!
Rubio likes bare naked wood and nothing else. No stains, oils, anything else. Just did a non HW shelf in a Rubio mist. it's.... kind of a weird product - when used with the accelerator, it's like applying a liquid wax to your car, apply, give it maybe 5 minutes. the wood is only going to soak up as much as it wants, everything left over needs to be buffed off or it won't cure and stays sticky. The results were pretty, but I'm not sure I would use it again for the cost.
So if these discs aren't used to remove the dark finish - you say in the comments somewhere that you used a paint stripper to remove the finish and that these discs are not aggressive enough to do that - then what is the purpose of using the discs on the stripped carvings? Also would be nice if you would check your video and comments and reply to questions once in a while and not ignore it for years..............
Thank for the video. How would you clean a lamp. I cleaned it with brasso, and yes. I have the white everywhere in the creases, and now I am going to have a hard time getting into all the spaces with a toothbrush.
Here to give a tip with the rubber mallet for those afraid to damage their furniture: you can put a felt pad on your rubber mallet. It may take a bit more time, but you are almost guaranteed to preserve completely your furniture from some marks the mallet could have make.
