Thank you so much for showing this. I appreciate that you talked about types of deck wood, age and size of your decks, number of sanding refills used, etc. All the details were very helpful including that the sander is very heavy. This part of your job turned out very well.

Pressure wash before sanding (takes away the mildew... Sand paper is more effective) ...Use 24 grit (I've used as low as 16). Seal with TWP 1500 series. My company has restored over 3,000 decks in the last 30 years....

Can you please share your whole process? When removing old paint do you run the drum sanding with the grain? Or on an angle? And what grit? There is so little info on this online it’s insane.

Either something was clogging the vacuum channel area that sucks up the saw dust / maybe torn paper or the belt had broken for the fan that creates the suction, otherwise that saw dust should have been completely sucked up. Plus that bag would be completely blown up solid from the air flowing into it when it's working correctly
@rickwillson2811
@rickwillson2811 3 года назад
Also, DONT drop the handle into wood. You will cause a major dent. Start moving as you glide into the wood and slowly bring the drum up at the end...Use a blower not a broom also.

This comment should be engraved on every drum sander so the operator knows. Can't tell you how many people ruin their deck by gouging their wood with one of these. Fantastic comment.

I think this is a great idea but because decks are uneven (unless the 2x6 was cut even) a belt sander would have been faster.

@@chenchen-qb8oq start with 100 grit to get used to lowering and raising the drum. The 100 grit will be forgiving and good practice. When your ready for the big leagues go as low as 36 grit. I often use as 16 grit but i've done over 4,000 decks

Thanks now I know I need to chemical strip wood deck next to inground pool . Way too much dust . Or buy cheap solid cover to keep all that dust out if I sand .
@millsmillwork5910

It does make a fine powder dust, but for the most part manageable. Good luck, and thank you for watching 😁👍
@AndYetHereWeAre
@AndYetHereWeAre 3 года назад
Buy a cheap solid? Goooood luck with taking that off when it wears. You'll have to sand again. This project could have been done with hydroxide strip followed by oxalic wash and then just stain. Never paint your deck with a solid. Oil only.

Really a drum sander? You know they do make a 12x18 deck sander. Maybe direct your viewers to that option. The average person would leave many many drum sander channels in their deck by not moving consistently. An actual deck sander, available at most large rental companies would be a better choice for your job and cost no more.
