Sands of Time - IL-2 Sturmovik: Desert Wings

The goods news is there's plenty of space for a deadstick landing in the desert. The bad news, it's a 12 mile walk through the sand to the nearest airfield.
Just having fun in the Desert Wings closed beta, but the sim actually comes out today! I'm a sucker for desert maps and flying the BF-108 (not seen) makes me really happy.

Mixing real footage from the news reels and the sim footage was brilliant. Same goes for the narrative with the chronometer. Amazing!

Excellent blending of game combat footage and real historical footage - top quality work just like last time.

Cheers Med, I've really been fancying blending the two in creative ways. There's so many details in sims and so much footage to match up. I think it's a really effective way of communicating and reminding us that these simulations we see in Steam represent men who were very real. Not that it gets lost on a lot, simfans are usually very well read on historical events, but more so in the moment of viewing it's quite transportive and validates the sim further.

Thanks Lemsip! It really took me back when making this, and poking around in the Full Mission Builder did as well considering the builder engine UI is very close to the 1946 one, I adapted pretty quick to it. Reminded of the hours I spent in that thing alone. The most noticable challenge for me in Desert Wings is the low speed flight models. The airplanes feel really nice, and at low airspeeds the challenge is very present. It's been a while in a sim I've been thrown into a genuine feeling spin stall and actually felt worried I might not recover. *Nassault Jettisons Canopy*

Incredibly well put together. The blend of ingame footage with real life footage and recordings are sublime. That P-40 in the desert reminds me a lot of Dennis Copping's emergency landing in the desert, unfortunately it wasn't a 12 mile walk home for him, it was more along the lines of 200 miles. He sadly lost his life in that desert and his plane wasn't found until 2012.
@Nassault
@Nassault 4 года назад
Cheers. Indeed, Copping's story is a bit more grim. Really shows the cost of war, not everyone is destined for a bullet, many fall to a myriad of terrible things, and we should always remember those as well. Thanks for your comment, have a nice weekend!

Do you prefer War Thunder or IL-2 for cinematics?
@Nassault
@Nassault 4 года назад
IL-2 for sure. War Thunder has a certain look and feel to it that I can't shake when filming or editing. But maybe that's because I've been playing it for 10 years as an Alpha Tester. Not to say it isn't gorgeous. I was playing Sim Mode rounds and farming in the F3D for the longest time, but until recently I've been playing IL-2 sim servers exclusively. I think it might have to do with all the little details IL-2 has as a sim, like being unable to bail in high-G, more detailed damage models, more camera options and generally more freedoms and aircraft controls and axis options to bind.

Indeed the inspiration. I always thought a gritty bio-pic is in order for him. Considering there's sand dunes not far from me maybe one day I'll scout for actors and make a 1/2 P-40E1 for filming..... If I recall correctly, despite the image of his abandoned P40 having bullet holes in the side, he was actually just ferrying the combat damaged craft to another airfield when the failure occurred.

@Nassault
@Nassault 4 года назад
Too much Ace Combat content will burn me out and I won't want to make any more, I made that mistake with KSP. I know people wanting more is really a compliment and means I am doing something right, but as a content creator and filmmaker it's part of the process to jump around from game to game in order to not lose drive. (also, waiting to get a new SSD before I do any more DCS stuff since my computer is hot bottlenecked garbage) If I feel forced to do something there will be very little emotional drive for me to make it, and in turn you will end up watching something but feeling nothing, but that's unique to the Ace Combat videos primarily as they take the most time to make, edit, compile assets etc. By week 3 I want to still be working on it and not looking for a way out, and considering I don't, and never will, have ads for NordVPN and Audible that pop-up halfway through my videos, there's no financial intensive either, no matter what BS numbers Social Blade pushes. For Ace Combat videos I need time, patience, and for it to come naturally. That's the reason I don't disappoint with them. Also, content I make that isn't Ace Combat related also strengthens the Ace Combat content I do eventually make, so every video helps the next. If it wasn't for Sanctuary, Lawson Station and We'll Meet Again, the Ice Cage video would never have been made as I wouldn't have figured out modding/controlling ground units to the extent you see in Ice Cage. This long answer isn't really directed at you but more so to address all of the commentators who ask of this frequently. THAT SAID, I have plans for doing Diapason and have already started editing assets.

Nassault Films that makes too much sense, i don’t like how reasonable that was. just wanted to let you know that glatisant introduced me to one of my new favorite ace combat songs and the moment in Round Table when the sukhoi ejects in slow mo is actually what caused me to get into dcs, so thanks for doing what you do
