What I'd like to see from Sandy and Tesla would be.... Tesla brings Sandy to the Cybertruck during development so he can make these suggestions BEFORE it's built so it becomes the greatest vehicle ever made. It has the potential!! Sandy's knowledge would guarantee it.
@TA-ob6kz
@TA-ob6kz 4 года назад
Yeah, it’s relatively inexpensive to get outside advice like Sandy and Mike Tracy. If these people are willing, why wait until after the vehicle is built to get their advice. And if they reveal anything, which they wouldn’t, no one would trust them again anyway. So, good suggestion.

@@whattheschmidt In the future, there will likely be fringe use cases that pure Battery electric vehicles won't be able to serve because of charging times. If charging times never catch up to the time it takes to fill up a hydrogen tank, then a small minority of ground vehicles will be Hydrogen-fuel-cell/Battery electric hybrids. Distributed hydrogen production at fuelling stations can serve these vehicles (a small electrolysis plant at each fuel station making their own hydrogen), especially if the majority of vehicles are pure Battery electric vehicles and the electricity is also produced from excess solar/wind farm generation on site. Seasonal storage of electricity, electric aircraft and various industrial processes may also benefit from distributed production of hydrogen from excess renewable electricity along with stationary battery storage.

They just need to make sure they follow or beat Tesla's update model and don't make the naiive mistakes all the other competitors do and ensure that their cars are built to age. All these "Tesla killers" start with a design that beats a current Tesla, but by the time they hit production they're already behind due to refreshes and software updates and lag further and further behind with each patch. They need to factor in FSD, supercharging networks, and where these things will be 2-5 years from today and either go all in to compete in those areas or go all in on being more affordable options.

Sandy said that he didn't see that in his teardown, compared to his model 3 teardown, but the model 3 he's using as reference was older (a year?) than the model Y he's tearing down now. It may very well be that the model 3 has also been updated with these improvements, so that if Sandy tore a brand new 3 down he might find more commonality with the parts.

As someone who extensive dealing(25yrs>) with body repairing Tesla’s and their high end German and Italian competitors, I can say their vehicle quality & after sales support was alarmingly poor. The quality of plastic replacement parts- particularly facias(bumpers) was so bad they looked like aftermarket / copy parts at best. We would often repair old fascia as new replacement one would arrive requiring hours of high building and spot repairs. Parts supply was always holding up key to key times. If customers Model# needed new door it would be supplied from Tilburg (5days shipping) even if one of my local SC had stock - we would have to prompt customer to complain to Tesla about parts delay. Some new vehicles looked like final stage QC / snagging was lacking or purposely left to dealer / customer sort issue between them. Our paint finishes caused original factory poor finish to be highlighted - orange peeling against nice fresh painted / polished glass like panel would frequently cause 4 way arguments customer x repairer x Tesla x insurance company. Panel gaps... No two cars had same specs. No chance gap gauges were in use. They did innovative and tech stuff amazingly well but old coach building and wet work was miles off the pace.

Why not hydrogen? 1) Economics - Hydrogen cost more to fuel than BEV. 2) A hydrogen generator cost thousands. A charger cost $400. 3) You can't charge at home. 4) No charging network yet. 5) Too explosive - leaked hydrogen can build up in your car or garage. Boom! But if someone discovers how to separate hydrogen from water cheaply, all of those are just engineering problems.

As interesting the engineering of the Hydrogen fuel cells are, I think with every auto-manufacturer admitting that BEV is the way to go there might not be much interest in that. The miurai is an engineering marvel but in the wrong time. If we didn't have lithium ion batteries they would be very interesting to the public. The VW ID.3 is coming soon so I'd love to see as much as possible about that car. It's positioned to compete with the model 3 and they're doing a lot of things differently in that car. May be they have issues with evacuating air from the Octovalve and system, because of the complex structure; many points for air to get stuck. Also cavitation does not need air in the system. Some cross section made too small during assembly could cause it.

Almost all hydrogen is obtained from Steam Reforming of Natural Gas. The fossil fuel industry promotes fuel cell cars as a way to prolong their business. We would all be driving electric if fuel cell money and talent had been directed toward battery and EV development. Sandy's talents are a national treasure and should be directed to viable technology and not a fossil fuel scam.

For someone so smart as Sandy, I am always amazed how people cannot see past the relative inefficiency of hydrogen as a fuel for a car and write it off immediately without further wasted thought....

Please ask why wheel rim manufacturers don't make left and right side wheels when they're radially asymmetrical. One side of the vehicle always looks wrong as they spin in opposite directions.

It's good to hear Sandy say some good things about Tesla. I might come to like him after all. As for the paint job and other comments, I had some minor issues with my 2016 S, but the 2019 paint and body were better than any Audi or Mercedes I ever owned. My wife's 2018 Model 3 is perfect also. Makes me wonder where he got the model Y.

I would personally love to see things that Sandy finds interesting. For me, that perspective of an expert has some real value. It wouldn't even need to be a complete teardown of any specific vehicle, could be stuff like 2-3 episodes on a particularly interesting engine or a production process or a material he found to be curious. Or even something like showing how some processes got more refined over time. Honestly, so far, even explaining how doors are built was giving me some insight that I didn't have before, and that's what makes it worth watching.

Great interview. I’m far more interested in what’s under the skin on the Y than the paint job, (though of course it’d still be nice if it was improved.) Hydrogen cars? Nope. Not interested, and also don’t believe there’s a future for them for personal transport at all.

This one viewer would like to know more about Munro Associates work, not cars of any kind. How about discussing an old report (that no longer has any monetary worth) on something like a dishwasher, or a rocket, or something they can freely disclose, and go through the exercise of explaining the how and why of Munro analysis work and derived conclusions - in GREAT detail? This is one VERY interesting business they've got.

Regarding cost and similar parts: It is possible that the later model 3 is more in common than the Y than the early model 3 that Munro broke down. Perhaps the newer parts developed in the Model Y is going to find its way to the model 3 too.

My suggestions (in order of interest) 1) Toyota Mirai 2) Porsche Taycan 3) Polestar (One or Two) 4) Rivian R1T 5) Volvo XC40 Recharge 6) Ford Mustang Mach-E 7) Bollinger B2 Many of the above are not released yet - so, obviously when they hit the market. :)

Your prediction on hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is one that I held 20 years ago. In the year 2000 I had no concept that battery technology would advance so far. Today, I'm not at all certain of the hydrogen fuel cell future. Neat technology. But if low-cost solid state batteries capable of 5000 cycles with low degradation come to fruition, I can only imagine it's lights-out for ICE and FC vehicles.

I would really like to know Sandy's take on the type of steel Tesla is using on the Model Y and its susceptibility to rust. All I've been able to determine by asking Tesla, when I ordered a Model Y several months ago, is that they dip the cars in a rust-proofing coating. My underlying question is whether they are using galvanized steel, as the US OEMs started doing in the early '80s (shortly after I left Chrysler in the late 70s). The stonewalling I got from Tesla on this caused me to cancel my Model Y order and I'm continuing to drive my 2006 Toyota Highlander hybrid with virtually no rust, here in snowy, salty Minnesota. Thanks, Jack Falker in Minneapolis

I'm coming to the conclusion that the Y frame is defective. When the Y was announced, Musk promised a one-piece cast aluminum frame. This didn't happen. There is a small rear casting, now one piece, but the rest is fabricated steel stampings and the result is clearly defective, hence the inability to get panels, doors, hatch, frunk to fit. If the plan is to gradually replace the steel fabrication with aluminum castings, that might explain why Tesla can't be bothered to fix the current frame, which is bad news for anyone planning to buy a Y.

It would be very interesting to hear about the Toyota fuel-cell car. Also, Daimler had the EQC out in Europe on 2019 - would be very interesting to hear what kind of solutions they have there. About Taycan - having this analyzed is very tempting as it is the flagship premium EV of VAG.

@@rogerstarkey5390 Not at all equivalent. Doing something competently that has been done in volume since cars rolled off Fords line and mastered by every car manufacturer long ago is vastly different than trying to create something significantly different and cutting edge that only one company has done successfully. There is zero excuse that after all these years Tesla still can't consistently do decent paint work or fix other core assembly issues that they have been continually criticized for.

Fuel cell car breakdown would be awesome.... I would love to see the truck comparisons also...... Also, just doing a comparison in "general" about what Japan is doing for longevity (such as toyota's and honda') vs american cars like dodge and chevy and why the imports tend to last 100k miles more or better---- Seeing exactly what the difference is would be great.

Don't know if there are enough being produced to do anything, but, seeing as Mr Monro has a background in aviation I'd like to hear his analysis of the many electric airplanes under development. Not drone types but eviation, zunum, magnix. Turboprop sized, short ranged, very economical, access to smaller airports. Thanks.
