if i had a nickle for every time I saw a fully dressed asian guy have an existential crisis in a bathtub, I would have two nickels which isn’t alot but its weird that it happened twice
I'm a Korean. That's not just existential crisis. That is a full-on suicide attempt. The thing that looks like incense is supposed to slowly suffocate him to death.
The fact that he prefered to kill himself so that gihun will get the money and help his mother rather than accepting to surrender, surviving but no money = no help for his mother, changing our all point of view on the character we thought was just a selfish bastard, was way better than just him winning
I dislike Sang woo for what he did to Ali and Sae Byeok, but I love him as a character. He did care for Ali beforehand, but ultimately chose self preservation in the end (for obvious reasons). In fact, I feel like the majority of his character boils down to self preservation. He put his mom’s business on the line for it, even. And idk I just think he’s really neat😭
I don’t think so , sang woo just do what the squid game rule , he is just a human who want survive and sorry but it was : sang woo or Ali and if sang woo let Ali win Ali will not push the guys in front of him in the glass game and they will all die ,
i hate him sm for the way he executed things but he signed up for the game so i get it, he did what he had to do to try to get to the end. it's sad, but realistic if he wanted to win the money. :/
I like how most people are disgusted by his actions but in reality most of y’all would’ve done the same thing if you were in his position Among all the characters he seems the most realistic. We all wish to be like Gi-Hun and think we could do the right thing, but the amount of chances Gi-Hun got was too lucky and not realistic, in a real scenario you would have to be a Sang Woo to survive and in reality we are all mostly Sang Woo by nature; all wishing to do the right thing but left with limited options that forces us to become something we don’t want to be or die
@@paytonn2432 Well the thing is you’re lucky you live in a society with a strong middle class and moving up the class system is believable, In South Korea there is a huge disparity between the rich and poor because there was a period where people were allowed to receive no limit on credit cards, due to govt not doing their part people were left with huge amounts of debts which carried on to their children. The idea of moving up the social class seems impossible for some people and in that type of society there’s bound to be desperate people willing to anything
@@Minadarling119 pepe speaking mad facts right here, my friends all hate sang woo for what he did but it was a life or death situation i think most of what he does is justifiable, i can say for myself i would've done the exact same
Sang Woo is an anti-hero. My favorite type of characters. An extremely complex character, who depending on the situation can be both good and bad, on the side of the protagonist, and against him, which is making them even more relatable, realistic and human-like. He isn't afraid to lie, manipulate, steal or kill. He will do whatever it takes to accomplish his goal - to survive.
I hate how people despise Sang Woo for doing what he did to Ali while at the same time like and support Gihun, a man who took advantage of an old man's dementia just to survive a game he would've lost. He was the most morally grey character in the whole show and definitely one of the favorite
I get what you’re saying, but I feel like it’s a little different. I don’t think he would have done it if he was young with children like Ali. (assuming that he still had a memory loss disability)
Man, I loved Sangwoo and found him relatable. So many people perceive him as undeserving of sympathy compared to the other contestants without considering what the pressure of growing up in poverty, lucking out and ending up intelligent or talented in some way and expected to basically 'save' your family and carry the hopes and dreams of your whole family/community from early childhood does to you; how it ingrains in you that your only value is your academic success and how you manage to please/impress those around you, you can never ask anyone for help or admit failure without feeling like an imposter who's 'lost' your status and worth, you're the one who's meant to be competent and can't lean on anyone else, etc. All things we very clearly see in Sangwoo, like how he straight up tries to kill himself in the 2nd episode and pathologically lies to keep his mother happy and remain 'the pride of Ssangmun-dong' to her, pushes himself to play in a death game and desensitizes himself to do more and more fucked up things that clearly fucked with him all to have her never know the truth and not let her down, he also frequently brushes off Gihun whenever he brings up his childhood and keeps him at arms length, only in the last few moments he's alive is he genuinely vulnerable with his friend. None of his haters seem to consider him a victim of intergenerational poverty either because they probably think he's too "smart" for that (which isn't how intergenerational poverty works of course). The writer of Squid Game also said that Gihun and Sangwoo are essentially 2 sides of himself; Gihun being poor and raised by a single mother and Sangwoo going to the same university he did after growing up that way carrying those huge expectations (and Hwang Dong-hyuk says he also struggled financially after going to SNU). I am surprised by how little most people understand him and just view him as some greedy sociopath or 'evil' instead of someone flawed and burdened by expectation who clearly felt guilty about almost every move he made (and also might be a gambling addict like Gihun, just with stocks instead of bets) and someone who acted realistically in a terrible situation, and also ultimately cared about Gihun in spite of trying so hard not to, to be pragmatic and view everything in objectives, and of course for his mother.
I agree, sometimes society and expectations literally fuck up people. I think his character is a great representation of that. Worldwide (and specially in east Asian countries) there's so much pressure on being academically successful. And those who are not are always shamed and deemed as lazy or just bad people. I think that Sangwoo was so desperate for reaching the high expectations that people had put on him that he would go to far lengths such as completely lying to his mom to not disappoint her (wich, honestly I think most of us have done something like that at some extent. Many times we tried to hide our bad grades, or just about anything that could make our parents upset) I think that it was made very clear that Sangwoo though that he would rather be dead than a disappointment to his family. Wich I think it's something very relatable for so many people.
he is the most complicated ans beautifully written character. People didnt realise the pressure he felt in every step as he hesitated at each step even tho he knew it was wrong. It just hurts so much . I love his character so much
@@chirstine_panadalover7949 for real, people are very agressive for no reason these days, I loved Ali and Sae, but I also liked Sang-Woo. Dude was a pretty good rival for the protagonist and he showed his good side even though he was fighting for his own survival.
Bro I swear when I first saw squid game and him in the bathroom trying to kill himself I jus played slow dancing in the dark in my head and it matched perfectly 😭
@@matthewtolentino5141 The method of charcoal-burning in a closed, unventilated room will lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, and eventually death. It's similar to inhaling cooking gas, I suppose.
Sang Woo is a well written character. He wants to maintain moral superiority and not come off from his high ground but when faced with an ultimatum, falls victim to stronger desires, tarnishing his image. It’s easy to judge his actions but we all have difficulty trying to live life with virtue because of the feelings attached to our desires. It was implied that he was untrustworthy at the start when he was discovered to be sucking money out of people’s pockets. You wouldn’t have expected it from him given that he would’ve had a bright future after attending a prestigious university. He had probably intended to uphold his high moral standards and work his way up to try to earn a prosperous career, but he ultimately abandons them when he’s enticed with the prospect of big money.
Dude this is just great, there isn’t even mass effects or anything but oh my god this song fits him so much and he is so drowned in the thought of self preservation and sadness it’s just so depressing to think about.
Thank you - this was beautifully edited and made. For me, Sang Woo was just as deserving (if not more) of winning Squid Game as Gi-Hun. He was the smartest one there and understood the only way to survive was to play logically and without emotion. I don't think he was a bad man, but the circumstances and life pressures forced him to crime and desperation. He gave Ali the bus fare after all even though he was drowning in debt himself, and I believe he cared a lot about Gi-Hun. He wasn't afraid either to admit that his actions were to keep him alive only and not his team. It was each man for himself. Anyway... I wish he had survived, and I wish people understood him more. 🥺
I honestly don't consider Sang Woo to be a vilain. Yes what he did throughout the game was awful and I hated him at times, but I realized that most of us can relate to him, even myself. Humans are complex. People aren't exclusively bad or good. That's why I appreciate his character, even though I love Ali. He certainly made the show interesting.
He’s the best and the only winner because of his logic,he think every time how out of trap never looking back to the costs and didn’t do anything stupid
Some people hated Sang woo withour knowing he's the most realistic character in the Movie he didn't want to die he wanted the money he was sad ali died and then he realised it at the end and killed himself
It's a hard decision between him and Gi-hun. I only chose Gi-hun over him because he knew both Sang's mother and Sae's brother. Gi-hun could take care of both of them, and he did. Not to mention his daughter. Killing himself is the smartest thing Sang has done.
i actually like sang-woo and it's kinda irritating how i get hated for it, i mean he was a good character despite betraying ali, but he did have a point for ending sae byeok's suffering. i don't know, i liked him from the start, i guess it's just the vibe of him being mistreated just because he's a university student, when really no one tries to see what he's actually done. kinda reminds me of myself. my family puts me in a high position but they are downright disgusted when i give them feelings of irritation and upsetness. like sorry, i have feelings too
Same, I also really like him and found him relatable. So many people perceive him as undeserving of sympathy compared to the other contestants without considering what the pressure of growing up in poverty, lucking out and ending up intelligent or talented in some way and expected to basically 'save' your family and carry the hopes and dreams of your whole family/community from early childhood does to you; how it ingrains in you that your only value is your academic success and how you manage to please/impress those around you, you can never ask anyone for help or admit failure without feeling like an imposter who's 'lost' your status and worth, _you're_ the one who's meant to be competent and can't lean on anyone else, etc. All things we very clearly see in Sangwoo, like he straight up tries to kill himself in the 2nd episode and pathologically lies to keep his mother happy and remain 'the pride of Ssangmun-dong' to her, pushes himself to play in a death game and desensitizes himself to do more and more fucked up things that clearly upset him all to have her never know the truth and not let her down, he also frequently brushes off Gihun whenever he brings up his childhood and keeps him at arms length, only in the last few moments he's alive he's genuinely vulnerable with his friend. None of his haters seem to consider him a victim of intergenerational poverty either because they probably think he's too "smart" for that (which isn't how intergenerational poverty works but yeah). The writer of Squid Game also said that Gihun and Sangwoo are essentially 2 sides of himself; Gihun being poor and raised by a single mother and Sangwoo going to the same university he did after growing up that way carrying those immense expectations (and Hwang Dong-hyuk says he also struggled financially despite going to SNU). i don't know what it was about this edit, but the way you matched up the clips really puts sangwoo's life in perspective. by the end it was apparent that he did in fact feel guilty and shameful of his actions but he had gone to a point of no return and knew that there was no way for him to go back to normal life. his last words were especially quite heartbreaking tbh. "when we were kids, we would play just like this and our moms would call us in for dinner. but no one calls us anymore." it really shows how lonely sangwoo felt like he was, and also how isolating and depressing adult life can be. and his "i'm sorry" afterwords felt like a plead of forgiveness for one last time, because he was well aware that he wasn't going to be forgiven anyway. sangwoo is perhaps the most realistic character in the series and also quite captivating and full of depth in comparison to gihun (personally i think) thank you so much for making this edit, it actually made me shed a few tears lol i guess i've grown quite attached to him.
Wow. Very well done, I loved Sang-woo's realism in the show. Yes I know he betrayed Ali, that was horrible, but I'm really happy Sang-woo was written so well. He has so much depth to him, I rewatched the show 3 times and I'm still trying to figure him out! Joji's song was a perfect fit for the edit.
I liked Sang Woo more than the MC. Sang Woo didn't visit his mom because he didn't want to put her in danger and make her life miserable. The MC on the other hand fully exploited his mother and made her life miserable.
It’s hard to be in this guys shoes. Everyone looks so high of you and despite tried your best, you failed and nothing wrong with that but the pain to let others down… Especially to your family. End up we push ourselves to a breaking point. What drove this guy to do what he did ultimately is money. He is trapped deeply with money I hate high expectations. I still want to do my best but it’s ok to fail.
This was a masterfull edit, I really liked how the cuts were achronological. It really got me thinking about Sang woo as a character though. The music/edit definitely makes the final battle hit different, the emotion and confusion between these two old friends
