This is a Sanken CS-M1 listening experience and demo. The Sanken CS-M1 comes in at under four inches and easily mounts on any professional or DSLR camera and packs a powerful punch with it's build quality, off axis rejection and it's smooth frequency response. This mic would be an excellent addition to any professional video or sound package.

Thanks for the review, I looked at this mic a while back but didn’t buy it. I’m looking into new mics again, so this may be a good option as I don’t want to pay for a MKH50 if there’s a less expensive option that will work for me.

What is the suspension? Not Rycote as you said. K-Tek maybe? Which model? Thank you : ) And thanks for the demo!

I think your right, It does appear to be KTek, it's branded as the KSM1 shock mount.

The mic is small but the recorder is big, is there a way to put it on camcorder to use in everyday situation yet still small with a recorder?
@MichaelWynneCAS
@MichaelWynneCAS 10 месяцев назад
Certainly, any camera that has phantom power and an XLR input can mount this, or you could use an accessory such as the XLR adaptor they make for the GH5 for instance.

What wide lens are you shooting with? I'm really liking my SLR Magic 8mm f4 on my Panasonic G6 (still living the 1080 life! Maybe one day I'll get a GH5 as well) Edit: ah, that looks like the Panasonic 8-18mm?

Where from is the plastic cap with SG (or GS) behind the XLR plug? It makes the new Neutrik XLR nicely small. It shows in your video at 2:12.

Hi Balthasar, these are custom cables from Gotham Sound, the caps I imagine are 3D printed with their companies initials.

This sounds darn good for informal street interviews and such-midrange crispy and detailed, but not harsh like the consumer on-camera options. So I'm guessing the mid-capsule only of the stereo Sanken CMS-50 sounds similar to this? I'm considering it as a two-in-one mic where in post I can use it for wide stereo ambiance or a center-focused speaker.
@MichaelWynneCAS
@MichaelWynneCAS 2 года назад
I’d say the CSM1 will have more off the advantage as a traditional super cardioid short shotgun mic for camera use in the rejection and reach category since the mid element of the CMS-50 is standard cardioid. It’s good and can work but not a substitute in my opinion.

Michael, thanks for this demo. Not a ton of stuff about this mic out there. I’m fascinated by it; wondering about it for solo low-profile documentary work, on a set-up very much like your gh5. Different than booming for sure. Sounds great here, close, as one would expect...what do you notice when you get a bit further away? Is the pattern too tight in a situation like that? Thanks.
@MichaelWynneCAS
@MichaelWynneCAS 3 года назад
Thanks Lloyd, like most super cardioid mics as you get farther back towards the edge of its usable distance it will not be as effective for capturing dialogue which is why most including myself will typically use a boom on a stand for those. For natural sound as a on camera mic for a run and gun type set up it’s excellent providing you have a good shock mount, proper wind and a XLR input with phantom power on your rig.

the mic sounds really awesome! Have you tried it indoors? I ask this because shotguns tend to have a bit weird behaviour due to reflections. depending of the room size and acustics of course...
@MichaelWynneCAS
@MichaelWynneCAS 5 лет назад
Hi João, thanks for the comment. I have used it some indoors for some stage work and the results were very good. Your right that short shotguns and true shotgun mics can have reflection issues indoors. Technically the CS-M1 is a hyper cardioid mic which is ideal for interiors.

Hi Michael, how's the pick up in the middle of a noisy environment? Thanks!
@MichaelWynneCAS
@MichaelWynneCAS 5 лет назад
I used this mic quite a few times on a stage that had some background noise issues. It's off axis rejection is really good which can be a double edged sword so any change in axis can cause considerable change in the background which required special skill and technique by the boom op. That being said what I liked most about this mic in that scenario was it's ability to pull the dialogue out of the mix when dealing with a less then optimal environment which has a lot do with the frequency response pattern of the mic itself.

@@MichaelWynneCAS Thanks Michael for the tip. I am looking for a mic with small pick-up pattern to be mounted on my GH5. haha. I see that you used it w a Mix-Pre. What do you think of using it with ZOOM recorders. Are their floor noise way too high for use w this mic?
@MichaelWynneCAS
@MichaelWynneCAS 5 лет назад
I haven't personally used the Zoom recorders so I'm not sure about the noise floor. Another question to consider is how big do you want your audio rig to be on the GH5 when using a mic that requires phantom power like the CS-M1. I've been considering the GH5 audio accessory ( DMW-XLR1) for it's per convenience over the MixPre3 since it both provides XLR and phantom power and is directly powered from the GH5.

Hello, I have a question about this microphone. I bought this microphone, but I felt like I couldn't respond to loud noises when I recorded it. Are you the same?
@MichaelWynneCAS
@MichaelWynneCAS 2 года назад
Hi Short Film, it’s likely it could be your mic pre amp input gain settings. The max SPL on these mics usually are more then any standard AD converter and it has a high SPL with a wide dynamic range.

Thanks for the video. Just curious if it's a good option for talking head videos when you're sitting at the desk. I like its versatility but not sure if it will suite this use case.
@MichaelWynneCAS
@MichaelWynneCAS Год назад
You bet, that depends. If your talking podcast, self film, RU-vid’esk with dynamic mic in frame then no. But for mic out of sight above frame, it’s a solid option.
@almynotes
@almynotes Год назад
@@MichaelWynneCAS thanks for answering, didn't expect that :) Appreciate it. I was actually thinking about placing it out of frame on a boom arm. But the question is, if I start typing something on the keyboard, how it will handle it. Would it distort the audio. This is basically the thing that holding me back from buying it, other than that I like this tyni universal mic.
@MichaelWynneCAS
@MichaelWynneCAS Год назад
@@almynotes i think it’s a matter of practicality, meaning typing wouldn’t necessarily distort a mic but dialogue and typing simultaneous may be distracting for listener, whereas if someone had a dynamic mic such as a SM7B in frame, the typing would be a non issue at the cost of a less natural sounding mic and obviously something in frame that’s not practical in a traditional talking head frame
