In October 2019, DEITY Microphones will begin shipping a short shotgun microphone they call the S-Mic 2S. While this sounds similar to the original DEITY S-Mic 2, this microphone is much smaller and lighter. It doesn’t reject ambient sound quite as well as the original S-Mic 2 but it also doesn’t run as high a risk of phase and comb-filtering issues when recording indoors in reverberant rooms. Let’s take a closer look and a listen!

Thanks for the review Curtis. Like everyone, I have been waiting for the review of the S-Mic 2s. I thought it sounded great, and if I got my super picky cap on, a bit thinner than I expected, but with “relaxed” high frequencies. Deity’s intent to have their mic’s cut together should work, I think the high end matches, but the low end presence difference may have to be dealt with somehow depending on the situation. The voice does seem to sit forward with the S-Mic 2s, and when you consider this with all the other mic’s I have heard in this price range, I would consider this one of, if not the best I’ve heard so far. Side note; The MKH-416’s noise floor and rear rejection were stellar. I’m not sure if you lucked into a really good one, or if that is characteristic of all of them. And this had nothing to do with anything, but I thought your voice sounded best on the Azden SGM-3500. All the best.

The off axis coloration (esp. on a moving source) on the S Mic 2 S seems a lot lower than the other longer mics. The frequency response remains consistent and that makes me lean towards that. I'm willing to sacrifice a little bit of rejection most of the time for a more balanced sound. If you're in a really noisy environment, even a mile long mic won't do anything. You're better off finding a quieter location or moving away from the noise source rather than just relying on the directionality of the mic.

@@AjushiPhotography The leveler can be used in conjunction with the compressor. I would do the leveler first, then follow that up with compression as needed. Hey, Curtis.... I wonder if another benefit of the short shotgun is that the actual mic pickup element can be positioned closer to the sound source, as the longer 'tube' of a long shotgun mean the mic pickup element must be further way to keep the tip out of the frame. We've used shorter shotguns in reverberant spaces to allow the mic element to be closer to the subject and thereby maximize the direct sound vs. the reflections... Let me know your thoughts...
@insanejughead
@insanejughead 4 года назад
Yes. In truth, shotgun style microphones would not be necessary if factors in each recording environment could be turned off and muted entirely. As humans subconsciously do, we choose what sounds to pay attention to (much like a lens only sees what it's pointed at); microphones are not able to do this, therefore we've designed them to minimize errant acoustic interference.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 4 года назад

Hi! Thank you for your VERY informative reviews! I mainly shoot 1-3 person interviews (1 person the most, 3 the least) and a lot of narrative work. 70% indoors. Would you think getting two Deity S mic 2Ss is the best option? I’ll likely set them in an XY configuration for >2 person stuff. I’m wondering how the Rode ntg5 would be useful for me though, after watching your positive reviews on them. Thanks again!
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 3 года назад
Hi Brian, the NTG5 has a substantially more focused polar pattern which isolates the sound at which the microphone is aimed a fair bit better than the S-Mic 2S and even the S-Mic 2. The NTG5 is, of course, a fair bit more expensive, but if I could only choose one, I'd definitely choose the RODE.
@briangoh2403
@briangoh2403 3 года назад
@@curtisjudd Thanks! Should I be worrying about indoor phase issues with the Rode ntg5? I’m not sure if the problem is due to the length or the polar pattern of the mic. And the tighter polar pattern makes the rode less suitable for XY configurations? Really appreciate your help!

@@briangoh2403 Not if you aim the mic and if in a particularly reverberant space, you manage the reverb with sound blankets. Are you trying to do stereo recordings or are you trying to mic each interview participant? If you're trying to do that with three people, you will pick up a fair bit of room ambient sound. I've used the NTG2 for years, but I think it's time for an upgrade -- it especially struggled with interference when shooting in a large city, and of course there are better options if I'm only going to be shooting seated interviews indoors. To pick up 4 people, Perhaps a boundary mic or at least a condenser microphone with a wider polar pattern would be a better choice than a shotgun microphone. Something like a RODE NT1, but keep in mind the 4 people will need to be seated quite close to the mic. If there is a PA system involved, you'll want to make sure the mic is not in front of the speakers or you'll probably have feedback issues.
