Sankt Hans is a party for midsummer. June 24 is Saint Hans 'day, and it is the night before, the 23rd, that is celebrated as Saint Hans' night.
The day has been celebrated in the Nordic countries for many centuries, and is i.a. described by Olaus Magnus, who wrote a chronicle about the history of the Nordic peoples in 1555. He tells how everyone "without distinction of gender or age" gathers in squares or fields to burn bonfires, dance and sing jokes.
The church was critical of this form of St. Hans celebration. The priest Niels Hemmingsen, who lived in the 16th century, wrote that the evening was celebrated with "dancing and night drinking, the wreath of street lambs, fire to light to howl, scream and drink all night long." Later, in 1744, a country fashion against Sankt Hansblus, i.a. for one should not joke with fire "... which is one of the hardest plagues of God".
Later, in 1770, St. Hans' Day itself was abolished as a public holiday. Still, people continued to celebrate the evening in different ways, right up until today.
