A few other notable Danish scientific discoveries worth mentioning: Ole Rømer was the first to measure the speed of light in 1676. Hans Christian Ørsted discovered electromagnetism (fundamental for electricity and modern technology) in 1820.

@@hiufuxthevideographer9877 Ole Rømer didn't exactly _measure_ the speed of light. He mainly discovered that light has a _finite_ speed, which he called "lysets tøven" (the hesitation of light). At the time, it was generally believed that light travelled at an infinite speed. When he discovered that this wasn't the case, he met significant resistance from his peers, but eventually it turned out to be true. However, he did estimate how much time light would take to travel the diameter of Earth, which can lead to an estimate of the speed of light. While the estimate isn't very accurate with modern eyes, it is still remarkable, given that he did it in the 17th century. Ørsted is one of my everlasting heroes. It is amazing how much stuff he did for science, the discovery of electromagnetism arguably being the most important one. Much of what he did is explained in Energimuseet (the Energy Museum) in Tange. I highly recommend a visit.

@@hiufuxthevideographer9877 Well, as a former world superpower - the last 200 years we have lost everything. That's why we had to start inventing stuff because we have no natural resources. Now we have a bit of oil, but just 50 years ago we only had fish, then when artificial fertilizer was invented, then we got farming. But for a few hundred years Denmark was a shithole place to live perhaps amongst the worst in Europe. Until we started educating the people.

Speaking of discoveries that are actually Danish, but which we ignored: Inge Lehmann was the person that discovered that the Earth has a molten core. But since she was a woman, she was dismissed by the Danish scientific community. However, the American military had use for her, so they rolled out the red carpet for her and she became famoues throughout the world. She's just forgotten here at home. Which is a shame for sure.

Something that may surprise some people is that Denmark is a *huge* player on the market for industrial enzymes. A report from 2007 states that we sat on 75% of the global market at the time. Novozymes, Chr. Hansen (huge in yogurt and cheese), and Danisco are the main contributors.

C++ was also created by a Danish person, Bjarne Stroustrup. So a big chunk of modern computer language comes from the work of a Danish person.

Don't forget Anders Hejlsberg, he did Turbo Pascal and is still active with Microsoft designing C#. He left my old high school before I did but he is a bit younger than I.

Bjarne Stroustrup was working with the inventors of C and UNIX at Bell Labs at the time. The Object Oriented concepts were from a Norwegian language named Simula, with Xerox Parc's SmallTalk language as the generation between Simula and C++.

@@RobeTrotting A bit beside the main track, but a great Nordic name in computer languages is, Linus Thorvalds from Helsinki, Finland. Now in the USA. He developed the free open source program LINUX. Also "Kaospilot" is a very Danish concept, a forerunner into the future.

Niels Bohr and his brother Harald who were a mathematician both played football or soccer as it is known in the US. Niels was a goolkeeper for AB (Akademisk Boldklub). He often brought a pencil and used it to scribble ideas on the posts back then made of wood. His brother Harald also played football in AB and on the Danish national team. He played in the 1908 London Olympics. Scored 2 goals against the French B Team and was later a part of the 17-1 victory over the French A team. Until 2001 the biggest victory. Australia beat Tonga 22-0 and later American Samoa 31-0. In the latter Archie Thompson scored 13 goals and took the record from Danish player Sophus "Krølben" Nielsen. He scored 10 goals in the 17-1 game in 1908. The Danes lost the final to Great Britain and got the silver

The Foundation of Google Maps is Danish as it ad developed by the company "Where 2 Technologies", started by the 2 danes Lars and Jens Eilstrup Rasmussen back in 2003. In 2004 Google bought the company and kept on working on what we today know as Google Maps.

The pH-scale, measuring acidity, was invented at the Carlsberg laboratory. They needed such a scale for their work with yeast and brewing. Hellesen was a common brand of battery when I was a child. I don't know if it exists anymore. Oh, and "Kirk" is pronounced kirk, not kørk.

Hellesen sold off most of their battery business, and the Hellesen trademark, after successfully outsourcing most of their production to lower wage countries, but they kept the patent and production of 9V alkaline batteries with 6 rectangular 1.5V batteries stacked inside (other brands had to bundle 6 AAAA batteries and a lot of air inside each battery sold. Then the company was bought by GP (Gold Peak) batteries from Asia, and their last Danish factory was rented/sold as a shopping space while still being the mail address on patent paperwork for the "9V battery" corporation. That patent has since expired, and I'm not sure anything remains of the company [Edited for punctuation].

Another thing co-founded by the Danes is Google Maps. It started life as a C++ program, which is another Danish invention, and it was a collaboration between two Danish brothers named Lars and Jens Eilstrup Rasmussen, alongside two Australians named Noel Gordon and Stephen Ma.

Niels Bohr also had part in the Manhattan Project, not a Danish invention, but participation in something new, huge and world changing.

True. Before that during the German occupation the Nazi nuclear project visited Bohr in Copenhagen trying convince him to help them; he refused. Then he escaped via Sweden and English to USA and helped them instead. From Stockholm to England he was lying in the bomb bay of a Mosquito plane where he passed out because of lack of oxygen.

The yeast was developed in Denmark, but the lager was invented in Plzen (Czech Republic) on October 5th 1842 by brewmaster Josef Groll (aged 27) Because it was invented in Plzen (Pilsen in German), that's why it is also called a Pilsner. And the original is of course called Urquell, the original source.

Also a Dane named Torben Westergaard Frandsen came up with the idea for the Lifestraw, a portabel water filtration build as a kind of straw that you stick into the water and simply just drink from it, as the filter should remove 99.9 % of all bacteria, and the straw filter should last for up to 1000 liters of water.

Actually Niels Bohr was a part of the Manhattan Project and travelled to the States in 1943. After the war he left the project, to help with the foundation of CERN. 😊

@@RobeTrotting Be careful, if you're including August Krogh and insulin. AK went to Canada in 1922 and got the recipe (his wife had diabetes). Went home and started to mass produce insulin, wich was his contribution.

Great video! Niels Bohr actually had a pipeline of beer from Carlsberg into his private home, as a show of honour to the gentleman. He also later worked on the Manhattan Project, and we all know what that ended up with. He was also the reason why we never got nuclear power in Denmark, as he was prohibited to talk about nuclear power by the US goverment. The famous speech given by President John F. Kennedy, announcing his intention to go to the Moon was written by a Danish immigrant Johannes Jensen. Lastly; for a long time a Dane was actually said to have invented the hamburger, another Danish immigrant who worked as a blacksmith in the US. At the turn of the 19th century, the Danish immigrant Louis Lassen sold steak sandwiches out of his lunch wagon in New Haven, Connecticut. From a place called Louis Lunch which still exists today. The burgers are now prepared by Louis’ great grandson Jeff Lassen, who currently runs the restaurant. The “no ketchup”-sign is visible hanging in the restaurant and an informative caption pops up to read: “Yale students who try to sneak in ketchup are asked to leave”. It is however later discovered, that it was a yank who made the first hamburger. Buut, still a good story! :)

@@RobeTrotting hehehe, well it's less silly than buying premade ice cubes in bags from the supermarket 🙄 ice cube trays are good but requires some space in the freezer, and an ice cube machine takes up a lot of space in the kitchen, and becomes a health hazard if not maintained and cleaned properly on a regular basis... I guess the whole concept of ice cubes is silly in the first place. I prefer to use those reusable ones, they also don't dilute the drink.

Bohr and Einstein had some of the most famous debates in the world of physics, but that was not limited to academia. Apparently, they took the tram from Trianglen in Copenhagen and drove it all way to the end and back, completely forgetting to get off, because they were too wrapped up in discussing physics.

There's also the danish explorer Vitus Jonassen Bering. 1681-1741. Who by request by the Russian Zar discovered that there was no land connection between siberia and america. The Berings Strait, The Berings Sea and Berings Island and more is named after him.

Insulin was not discovered in Denmark, but in Canada in 1921. August Krogh brought it to Denmark in 1923, and started early production+research in what is now Novo Nordisk.

Fun fact: Peter L. Jensen, the co-inventor of the first loudspeaker, went on to founding the Chicago-based company Jensen Radio Manufacturing Company, which (among other things) manufactured the iconic Jensen Loudspeakers used in some of the most beloved Fender guitar and bass amplifiers of all time, such as the iconic Fender '57 Deluxe and Fender Bassman.

I think you'd enjoy a great "classic" popular science book by a very talented Dane, Tord Nørretranders, Mærk Verden - En beretning om bevidsthed (I've read it a few times in Swedish). I'm pretty sure it is published in English as "The User Illusion, Cutting Consciousness Down to Size". It might open your eyes for the authot, if you didn't know about him already.

In the 12th century København was simply named Havn (harbbour), and that's why the Latin name is still Hafnia. Køben (as in a chartered Købstad or Market Town) was added shortly after it became the property of Bishop Absalon, but long before it bacame the capital or Hovedstad.

What parts of your lives are influenced by it? - Very, very long series of looong instalments. AND he was not just a cool scientist, but also a humanitarian and therefore e.g. a fatherly friend and mentor of H.C. Andersen, understanding his depths - as opposed to Disney just scratching the surface and adding glitz and kitsch for business.

@@RobeTrotting There are records of some Italian monk discovering the electromagnetism some years before H.C. Ørsted, the monk was not a part of the scientific circles in Europe. Ørsted might have read about his work and made it known. I don't remember my sources for this, sorry.

How could you not mention the klaphat (claphat) - looks chemical, but it's klap-hat - one of the most useless things ever invented in any country. Basically it's a cap with two little hands on the front which you can eh... To describe how a claphat works is painful because it is just too embarassing even for a Dane. It's only function really is to make the person who wears it look stupid, which is probably the reason why someone who messed something up can be called a klaphat.

It most certainly was. Antabus contains Disulfiram, which is a product used in the rubber business, and it was noticed that rubber workers used to feel uncomfortable when drinking alcohol. Danish scientists did some research in the product and started testing it on them selves. First make a test and then out for some alcohol 🍻🥂🥃 Who say that science is boring?

One of the main things about modern cell-phones is, that you can move from cell to cell without loosing the connection. Basically, you are truly mobile. Other systems, American and Japanese, required you to stay within the range of the one repeater that established the call to keep the call open. The systems that gave phones the ability to switch repeater was developed in the Nordic countries, for the NMT phone system. I am not sure, but do believe, that it was mainly Denmark and Finland that was the main driving force. None the less, modern cell telephony was invented in Denmark and Finland, or at least in the Nordic countries.

Sometime in the 1910's, Bohr had a visit from Albert Einstein. Bohr went to Copenhagen Central Station to pick up Einstein, and they went on the tram towards Bohr's residence. As expected they got to talking about their science, and forgot where they were. Instead they traveled all they way to the end station. Decided to return on the same tram line. Once again they talked, and forgot to get of at the correct stop, so back on forth they went a couple of times.

Another Danish "invention" is the Danish Bacon Pig (aka Dansk Landrace). A pig bred to have an extra set of ribs for all that sweet sweet bacon which made Danish Pork exports a huge thing.

They may have made traditional wooden building bricks held together by nothing back in the day. But those don't mix (directly) with the Lego System. In the 1960s there was an experiment to make really big bricks out of polystyrene foam (2 knobs per brick). They were fun but never commercialized.

Nobel prize winner, Jens Christian Skou might be worth a mention for his discovery of the Ion transporter, known as the Sodium-potassium pump ( danish: natrium-kalium pumpen), while slightly difficult to explain in layman's terms - It is found in all human cells and is pivotal to the body's function, maintaining an optimal ion balance in the cells - this transporter uses about 25 % of all energy in the body measured in ATP - the molecular unit of currency

i actually made a school projekt about danish innovation and im so glad that you had at least two of the things i had in my presentation btw bubble wrap is also a danish invention but when it was time to mase produce the produkt it only lated a year and then the factory closed down the production andsaid to (cant remember the inventers name) that there was no future in bubble wrap but shortly after the sister factory in england coppied the bubble wrap

The torture devices for Women and girls called curlers, the plastic round thingies girls put into their hair to get curls after washing. As for Beer, heres some fun fact. 1) It has been found as offering in graves in Egypt from 2800 BCE. 2) The worlfd oldest written recipe is Sumerian for beer from around 1400 BCE, it has been tested, annd should be fairly good. 3) The worlds oldest love song/poetry is to either A) A small house God or B) A very lovely Lady that was very good at making Beer and make you feel good, it as like number two Also from Sumer and somewhat younger than the recioe

I have some of the first LEGO ever produced and it has passed on to my sons. By the way, LEGO isn't just for boys, the girls of my generation in Denmark cherished it just as much even if it was to build furniture for our dollhouses or for our new Barbie dolls

Actually, tape recording is far from dead. There are still records, that are being recorded on tape, the so-called AAC, AAA or ACC methods. The first letter stands for the recording itself (analog), the second for mixing (analog or digital), and the last for the medium type (LP or tape is analog, digital media such as CD or file is C). In the computer world, analog tapes are still widely used, to store wast amount of data. For instance, CERN stores all their data on tapes. This is a slow process, but the only way to store their measurements. One measurement of data from the Large Hadron Collier can run into many terabytes of data. It would be incredibly expensive, to store all these data on harddrives. Here's an explanation from a website, regarding data storage at CERN: "Data Storage The LHC experiments produce over 25 petabytes of data per year. These are transferred to the data centre where initial data reconstruction and archival is performed. 100 petabytes are kept in mass-storage systems - the equivalent of 700 years of full HD-quality movies. Magnetic tapes are used as the main long-term storage medium. To access the files, special robotic arms find the right tapes and load them into the tape drives. More than 480 million experiment files are stored in the data centre."

The Assembly line. It was An Actual Engineer ( not like the ones who call them selfs that in the states now adays) danish imigrant that made it practical. So it can be widely used, the idea behind it, was fords but the way it works was a dane who was responsible. Who also was the same person that the potus asked to be the ‘head’ coordinator . The big guy, boss man during the beginning of wwII to make the american war production working. And it was he who delicated the production of the Jeep and other things like the sherman tank to different car manufacturers so it could be used and that they could follow up while the war was ongoing. Mind you when the war started to the Americans they only had few functioning tanks, ships and airoplanes and almost lacking in the way of transport of large groups. Expept the american railways. So that person made it posible to do it. I forget his name. But he left Danmark at the early 1900’s and worked in major factories. Like GM, Ford and such perfecting their production

Rockwool! As every modern house in the world use to insulate the walls/roofs with, that is Danish invention aswell. Also another imortant thing to address... it is pronounced DANMARK! not denmark..
