Hi Tony, I’d go with black for the cover. Rather than the chicken train, the Swedish chef from muppet show comes to my mind, tossing the chicken in the basket.
On my AU717 and TU 717 I had the covers repainted at a body shop. They matched the original color pretty close. Even clear coated them, looks great! About as close to original as I could get.
I agree with you and leave it original. Maybe lightly sand clean and lacquer it and have it’s scars covered and shiny but still visible, maybe. Enjoying the journey as usual so far. Thank you 😊
My vote is to just make the panels back. As for the mess and the phone, I have a friend who is a bee keeper and he carries his phone in a zip lock bag that just fits it. That and some nitrile gloves and you'd be all set. Loved the jab on the non-oxygen free wires.
Looking forward to seeing this series; I have a soft spot for this particular line of Sansui gear. You might ask your powdercoat person to compare "Argent Silver" to the original color, might be real close; darker, but close. Thank you for your time Tony!
I think black is the new black. Just don't go pastel black. LOL I'll bet that amp smells. Back in the 60s when I was a kid we raised chickens and I had to shovel the chicken coop. Bad memories. I love the Ozark Mountain Daredevils!
Still have my Sansui CA-2000, BA-2000 & TU-9900 that I bought at the PX on Guam in 1978. In fact, I'm listening to it now - just put on Jackie Blue on in honor of you. I'm glad you are doing this series - I'm learning what stuff I may have to be doing in the future. Thank you sooooo much for walking through everything and doing these videos
That's going to be an interesting trouble shoot for sure, i'll be watching thank's for sharing this video. To answer your paint question, i've had success with my TU-717 & AU-717, by getting a few cans mixed at a local car paint outlet. They had tons of sample books to look at and with one of the casing next the samples i was able to match the colour almost to perfection. Once back home i sanded down the old paint to metal, then spayed etching primer which i wet sanded and then applied a few coats of the paint. I remember when i brought the tuner in for an alignment over at my tech, he couldn't believe the tuner was from the 70s. That alone made my day :-)
I was always a fan of "Whisky Train" by Procul Harum, "Glendale Train" by New Riders (aka NRPS) and (of course) Casey Jones (all versions!) by the Grateful Dead. Oooops. Almost forgot..."Slow Train Coming" -- Bob Dylan.
Although black is fine you may ask for car paint ( the one with separate hardener). It’s easier to match the colors and they last very long ( they are cured in oven). I don’t know how much it would be there, but usually are cheaper than powder coating. The look pretty similar. Either way will be good when is good for you 😬. Nice piece of equipment as CA 2000. ❤️
This is one time I’m glad we don’t have smellavision. As far as painting goes if you’re trying to keep it as original as possible then you would have to go that way. Personally I would just make it look good with a quality paint job
The first step. Very first step. The obsolute first step is to take it outside and clean it with some classic electrowash 111 CFC. rubber gloves, mask, and tyvek suite
To each their own. Some people hear better sound with $1000.00 cables. I couldn't. Some people may like all original, but I see it as there have been thousands of the BA 2000 built in the bronze color out there but only one person will have the custom black that you may be presenting. Who knows, it may even sound better in black! Thank You!
The first thing I'd have done with this is take the covers off, take it outside and put compressed air to it to share the chicken compost with the world.
Be careful bringing home audio stuff from homes like that. My buddy brought home a unit containing cockroaches that escaped into his car (and fortunately not later and into his house). He promptly left the unit outside under a cover for a time until they evacuated. Roach traps in the car for a time too. A real eye opener.
I like your video's but, can I mention that video quality has degraded last video's. It looks blurry and blocky mostly around the edges. What happened?
If you’re going to paint it, probably paint it how to want. Painting it already changes it from OEM. I like them nice but collectors think differently.
Pausing the video briefly to say... just make it black! It will look great based on the panels they have done for you before, and I don't think originality is an issue here - it is just a metal cover.
I do not care all that much about whether the outside looks mint There is something to be said about the esthetics of all the old battle scars just cleaned and maybe waxed. However to be restored to original or better b working order yes always the ideal.
Leave it like it is which is fine by me too or restore it right, painting it wrong will be it's fate for the next 50ys. Across the decades to come people will look at it and think who the heck had it painted wrong?
