The making of the model ship Santa Ana. The Scale of the model is 1:84 and it belongs at the Elite series of Artesania Latina.The time i needed to make this model was approximately 8 and a half months with hundreds of working hours. The cost was approximately 1200-1300 euros (with the display case). The model alone was 730 euros on 2013. The varnish is gloss by choice because it "brings out" the wood, it's more easy to clean ,you cannot have any white spots and it looks better. You can see this as my trademark! To answer a typical question, yes it will probably float ,but you will never put it in water. The model has been discontinued by Artesania Latina, i believe it was due it's high price. You can find it only in a shop that has stock. Until today this model is the most beautiful and at the same time the most difficult model i ever made.
Artesania has relaunched the model on October 2022 but it is similar to this one, not the same.
The music is the Waltz "Blue Danude" by Johann Strauss. When i uploaded the video i couldn't find a way to insert more music tracks. Now i have found a way ,but to do that i must delete the video and upload it again, this means that i will loose all the views and comments, so i won't do it.
In this video i This Video comes in 1080p.

My grandfather would spend hours in his shop building these beautiful wooden model ships,his best he said was H.M.S. Africa built from plans not a kit. He could work fast but,he took his sweet time putting the Africa aside for other projects..grandpa passed away in 1983,I ended up finishing the Africa,i had not worked on a wood model but,watched him build,with a great deal of advice and help from friends of my grandfather I did it,eight years after he built the ship I did the masts,rigging, boats and the finely molded metal crew figures..H.M.S.Africa,sits in the Seattle maritime museum..scale is 1/72 it's a good size replica. My grandfather gets full credit for the build,my name is for owner/doner only.

Thank you very much for your kind words!!! First of all you will need a lot of tools. Check out my other video with the tools you will need "Tools needed for model ship making" ,i also have a few examples and i am explaining the use of every tool. Here is a few tips, the wood forgives any mistake you might do so don't be afraid when working with it. Do not choose an elite series model for your first one. Better to learn in a "medium" size model (about 70 to 80 cm long). The most important thing to know is that the keel has different length at the bow, at the stern and at the middle. So you have to make the wood "thinner" for these. Try every wood in place before gluing it. Be very careful when you are ready to cut any holes in the model ,a few millimeters wrong may become a big problem. Be sure about your measurements from the schematics, remember that the scale is 1:1. And always sand down the wood before cutting it into size. And one more thing, try the cutting edge of every wood to be at 90 degrees, unless the schematics says different.

"So it would seem." Honestly I prefer the Santisima Trinidad. But that's for personal reasons. And the Santa Ana is indeed quite beautiful. Spanish first rates may not have been the most efficient ships out there but they were some beautiful behemoths. And if you take into account that the reason they were designed that was was because their primary function was as defensive patrols on the relatively populated mediterranean and caribean seas it makes sense that they'd ignore speed and maneuverability in exchange for raw firepower and imposing size. Not many pirates would have the balls to get close to, much less try to attack, a massive 112 cannons floating castle like Santa Ana, much less the 140 cannons biggest-and-most-heavily-armed-ship-of-its-era that was the Santisima Trinidad. Only Horatio (motherloving) Nelson would be crazy enough to try his luck against that! And he did... and won... somehow. Fucking Nelson. He was either insane or a genius. I still don't think anyone knows which for sure. But he did make it work!
@joegatt2306
@joegatt2306 4 года назад
First of all, I cannot help but admire all your models. Secondly, wasn't the Santa Ana, for a time, all painted black with dark grey (?) gun-ports. Wouldn't that make a spectacular model? Thirdly, Spanish ships of the line, especially the First Rates had the most beautiful names, my favorite is Salvador bel Mundo, followed by Santisima Trinidad and Purísima Concepción .

Just remember -white glue not stick to oiled surfaces. and also one tip for brass-you can get best look of old iron, cast iron or bronze from brass if you will use BrassBlack from Birchwood Casey. I must agree here..To put that much work into a model like this and then DROWN it in varnish so it looks like a fly trapped in amber is a real shame. You would have been better off airbrushing the varnish or using tung oil as suggested. Also I must point out one other flaw and that is that the mast platforms just above the main sails on all three mast are installed upside down. The platforms are supposed to have the radial braces under the platforms for support and the flat sides are on top for the crew to stand on. Other wise this is an amazing build and incredible amount of work.

@JohnsWoodenShips
@JohnsWoodenShips 4 года назад
You are probably referring to these display cases : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-79bLUZnBUbo.html I was making them like these for years and i had 3 problems. 1) the ship was going in from the top because all the electric wiring and spot lights where at the sides, 2) the top cover did not seal the display case as i wanted it to seal 3) because the ship was getting in from the top, it was big problem with the heavy models. The Santa Ana weights around 14-16 kilos (28-32 pounds), this means that there is NO way to get it inside from the top, only from side. By doing that you have to attach all the electric staff to the top and not to the side covers. Also by doing the display case like this i have a more steady construction and the side cover is screwed so the sealing is better. It took me many years of trying to achieve the best display case for my needs and this one is.

Great build John! i would like to comment to those people asking if they can build this or other large sailing ships with no experience. the answer is not simple, if you have confidence in your own skills, or maybe experience in other model building and am willing to research methods then i would say yes quite possibly. From my own experience my first model is a 1/84 scale hms victory that i am still working on after 2 years BUT the instructions are step by step with colour photos, if i had attempted the Santa Ana it would have been a much bigger challenge. look for a model with superb instructions or where there are good video build logs[like johns] which really help if you get stuck. It can be done but most ship modellers would correctly suggest making a smaller less complicated model to build confidence and skill. Its a really satisfying hobby if you love ships. best of luck.

The Santa Ana was the most difficult model i ever made. If you want to begin making wooden model ships definitely you won't start with an elite series model. I am building a model of USS Rattlesnake at the moment. I've found I'm not quite up to the task, haha. Are there any resources you used to learn how to model shipbuild? Thank you
@JohnsWoodenShips
@JohnsWoodenShips 6 лет назад
I learned while making the models, i started on 2001 to make wooden models. Some tips to help you with your building. You have to use 3 types of sand paper, very hard for the keel, medium and for the finish job at about 600 degrees). You have to use wood sealer before applying any paint or varnish.You apply a hand of wood sealer then sand it with the 600 paper. Another hand of wood sealer, then one more time sanding with the 600. Final 2 hands of clear varnish for everything. You will need a soldering iron approximately at 40 watt (for bending the wood) and a small bowl for moisture the wood with water before you bend them. You will need big pins to use at the strips of wood until they glue with each other and 2 types of glue ( cyanoacrylate for wood , and a slow one PVA Glue the quick dry type that needs 5-8 hours to dry). You will need to adjust the bending of the wood before gluing it and make sure that it has the right shape when it's dry, then glue it. Also remember this, the front end of the keel and the rear end are less in leghth from top to bottom as the length at the middle of the keel. So you have to make the wood less wide like the tip of a triangle and you have to start making it less wide at the point where the keel starts to have a curve. More to the front than the rear. You will need a small planer for this job.

Thank you very much for your kind words!!! The Santa Ana was a 112-gun three-decker ship. She was the prototype and lead ship of the Santa Ana class which were built at Ferrol and Havana and which formed the backbone of the Spanish Navy - the other ships were the Mejicano, Conde de Regla, Salvador del Mundo, Real Carlos, San Hermenegildo, Reina María Luisa and Príncipe de Asturias. She was launched on 28 September 1784. She was tested at sea on 28 February 1785 under the captaincy of Félix de Tejada, who reported the test to his commanding officer that the ship "kept the battery in good use [even] in a fresh wind and heavy seas". The success of the trials led to a royal order that subsequent three-deckers would be built to the same plans. At Trafalgar she was the flagship of Alava and captained by José de Gardoqui and was captured by the British. However, two days later, a squadron succeeded in recapturing her and getting her back to Cadiz. She and Príncipe de Asturias moved to Havana in 1810 to avoid capture by the French and sank in its Arsenal in 1816.
