The area around southwest Utah is packed-full of small volcanoes known as cinder cones. Hiking to the top of one of these cones can offer great views of the awesome scenery below. This virtual hiking tour will take you up one such cinder cone on the edge of Snow Canyon State Park, just ten miles north of St. George, Utah.

Great photography! My husband and I visited the San Francisco Volcanic Field near Flagstaff a couple of years ago. I didn’t realize so much of the American west had volcanic landscapes! We live in the shadow of the Cascade Mountain volcanoes and those bad boys dominate from Lassen all the way to the volcanoes in British Columbia.

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the tour. Yes, volcanism can be found in many parts of the west, but there's a lot in the Cascades as well. What's interesting to learn, is that it's all different; different dynamics going on.

Your channel reminds me of a show I used to watch years ago when I still lived in the Bay area called Bay Area back roads. Love the channel keep it up.

Ha ha, Bay Area Backroads, used to watch it when I was working there in the '90s and following decade. We're originally from Southern Cal, so we had Huell Howser on PBS down there, it was a similar show. Both those of shows were definitely inspiration for us to do this channel. Thanks for commenting!

Some of my best friends are cinder cones but I wouldn't want to live next to one. I like lichens too.

No doubt! Or a fault zone, even though their interesting to check out. Hey, are you related to the Desert Studies Center at Zzyzx? We used to be buddies with some of the staff out there that have since retired. You do know what Zzyzx means, right?

@@BackRoadsWest1 Oh no, I just like the name and the story about Zzyzx Springs. I use to travel from So Cal to Boulder City, NV a bunch of time starting in the 1970s and the name of the exit road sign from the Fwy 15 has always stuck with me along with seeing the claimed largest thermometer in the World in Baker, CA. The Gateway To Death Valley. My truck overheated on the Baker grade once. Man, talk about being stuck in the middle of a hell hole. :) One time I travel in the back of my dad's old pickup truck driving back to So Cal at 10:00pm traveling by Baker and I couldn't beleive how hot it was. It was like a scorching day except there was no sun up.
