Dynamic Dahinda
C.R. captures a great day at the Santa Fe' transcon crossing of the Spoon River near Dahinda, IL on July 7, 1995. This is all Warbonnet and Bluebonnets (except Amtrak) with one lash-up right out of the 60's. Some of the numbers are a guess.
1) Westbound SF 5140 (SD40-2) and 5834(?)(SD45-2u) have a train of empty westbound stack and trailer cars.
2) Santa Fe C44-9W #642, B40-8W #541 & 1 more Dash 9 surprised C. R. with an empty eastbound auto rack train.
3) ATSF GP20u #3048, GP9u #2247, a B23-7 and GP20u 3042 (a guess) race west with a long mixed and recreate the Santa Fe of the 60’s.
4) SF SD40-2 5130 (MKM) a SD40-2 and a Dash 9 head east with another mixed consist
5) Amtrak’s westbound Southwest Chief is next with extra head end business
6) ATSF C41-8W #929 leads two other warbonnets and an SD75M on an eastbound TOFC.
7) Warbonnet #504 B40, a GP50, another B40, a SD75M, a Dash 9, a GP 60, two SD75Ms and a GP60B on a power balancing move and westbound TOFC.
8) ATSF C44-9W #673, a Dash 9 and an A-B-A set of GP60s race west on a TOFC.
9) ATSF C44-9W #678, a GP60B, C41-8W’s #939 and #932 are westbound with stack/TOFC train.
10) Warbonnet B40-8W # 554leads three more B 40s east with a hot TOFC train.
11) Bluebonnet SF GP50, a 4000 class GP60, a GP60 B and a bluebonnet GP60 work eastbound with a TOFC train.

The thing about the Santa Fe for me is how good their locomotives looked. The warbonnets and yellowbonnets, it felt like a legacy railroad. BNSF isn't the same, their paint scheme feels soulless and empty. The ATSF gave an image of "I want to work for them!" And "quality service to our customers"

When the merger came in 95, the ATSF spirit wasn’t kept alive. It was tarnished in orange day by day on the Burlington the Northern and the Santa Fe.

@@chuckmiller4871 I think Judy garland would have a heart attack and die again if she saw what Santa Fe had become. But more importantly she’d go “wow those drugs and meds got to me because I see a lot of orange!”

These were before BN took the ATSF over. Love that blue and yellow. The blue and yellow F units were amazing. Anyone remember when SP was going to merge with ATSF? The locomotives were painted red and yellow, with a big SP or SF on them.

If you want to see awesome power today, Minnesota's the perfect place for railfanning. SD75s, Warbonnets (REAL ones), Geeps on the mainline, SD40-2s, all EMD consists, Leslie RS series horns, awesome and rare shortline locomotives, etc, etc.

@@xavierjackson3796Yeah, BNSF doesn’t care about it’s heritage. We need the War Bonnet to return along with the Blue Bonnet, the rare Yellow Bonnet, and the unheard of Gold Bonnet.

We spent our photo vacations on the ATSF back in 1994-5-6.(Illinois) Knowing the end was near. And seeing all those red/silver locos was amazing. I remember a train at Edelstein had all GP20-30-35 lashup. Due to easy grades, ATSF kept a lot(what remained) of the older power on the Chi.-KC route.

Ship and travel Santa Fe all the way. That was the proud slogan that the Santa Fe had for many years during the glory days of railroads before more advanced competitors unfortunately took over most passenger and freight business. But unlike most other railroads which could not cope with the reality and either went bankrupt and went out of business or became part of the merger game, the Santa Fe boldly and bravely soldiered on until the latter end of the 1990s when BNSF took over. But in today's modern era BNSF has mostly taken up where the Santa Fe left off, hustling priority intermodal business better than many trucking companies.
@chuckmiller4871
@chuckmiller4871 6 лет назад
Spot on! Regulation hurt many. Now, in hindsight, we see the loss and the expense of rebuilding that infrastructure. I should be able to get on a train and go from A to B as in the case overseas. BN and SF merged and are seemingly doing well. Sadly - the variety is missing for us camera heads.

The way the trains are going that you have listed is wrong, the ones you have for Westbound are really Eastbound and the Eastbound ones are Westbound.
