It's a once in a lifetime move as Union Pacific transfers much of it's historic railroad equipment from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Silvis, Illinois. Many of these locomotives have not moved in more than 40 years. The move was part of one of the biggest donations in railroad preservation history. Locomotives include...
Challenger #3985, one of the Worlds largest steam locomotives.
DD40AX, Centennial #6936, Worlds largest diesel locomotive.
TTT-6, #5511, a 1923, 2-10-2, Santa Fe type steam locomotive.
Ex Amtrak #966B, E9B.
Chicago, Norther western, F unit.
All locomotives and cars will be heading to the massive shop in Silvis, Illinois, owned by Railroading Heritage of Midwest America where most will be overhauled and returned to operating condition. Challenger #3985 will be returned to operation first with #5511 next in line.
The move went smoothly with only some minor oiling issues with the #5511. For more information click link here rrhma.com

As a kid growing up in Chicago I used to hang out at the tracks and see those C&NW F units every day. Over time they all went away. The very last one I know of sat for years on a east side of the station siding at the Waukegan METRA/C&NW station. Riding from downtown to Zion I used to always look for it. Until the day it was gone also. I can't wait to see this one restored.

From a UK viewer this is an impressive line up! We have generally smaller locomotives here but it would be unheard of to see a rebuild loco on the main line. There are specialist companies that move locos between heritage railways. Well done UP
@commodoresixfour7478
@commodoresixfour7478 Год назад
Yeah, it happens often enough here but I wouldn't say its common. My local Steam engine Soo Line 1003 gets on the main line about once a year. This year it made two trips. Once on its home railroad Wisconsin Southern for a photo excursion and the second time down to Chicago on the Metra railroad.
@UKHeritageRailways

But public excursions on class 1 railroads other than UP are now non existent because of Amtrak’s charter ban started March 2018 and liability issues. Class 1’s don’t want the risk anymore of railfan excursions. Too many things can go wrong. NS allowed steam excursions again from Sept. 2011 to spring 2017 because then CEO Charles “Wick” Moorman was a railfan. He wanted steam to run on NS again and they partnered with TVRM then Fort Wayne with 765 and VMT in Roanoke with 611. Cheyenne is the only place in the US that has steam locomotives at a class 1 owned facility.

I wish the RHOMA good luck when they get started on the work needed to bring back 3985. It still amazes me that UP donated the engine alongside other pieces of their equipment to them, giving the engines a new lease on life and another chance at running again. Including 5511.
@thunderbird1921

Interestingly, UP had 5511 up for sale for YEARS, advertising it as a restorable engine for any tourist line. RRHMA has themselves a priceless piece of railroading history, as she's the last of her kind, the TTT-class (ironically, the Big Boys and Challengers are what replaced her in service on the Wasatch Range in the 1940s, that was originally the route that the "Triple Ts" had been built for 20 some years earlier).

My Dad grew up in Iowa, where the CNW, the UP and the Rock Island ruled supreme. I hope there will be restoration, but I'm still sad to see 3985 leave UP. Fond memories of running with her.

The moment I see 5511 and Challenger fully restored to operation, boy I’m gonna go to my family and say “The Union Pacific steam team is back!”

I was just as impressed to see a DDA-40X out on the main line. A noble beast if there ever were such a thing!

I don’t know why, but the shot at 4:09 reminds me so much of the I Love Toy Trains videos I used to watch as a kid. Gonna have to go try and pull it off myself now. Great vid!
