Santa Fe, SPSF, Burlington Northern, Rio Grande, Union Pacific 1986! Trains from the Rockies to the East 1985-1986 features trains with multiple locomotives on the point and cabooses on the end. This was an age before distributed power and graffiti painted on most freight cars. The show opens on the pre-mega merger Colorado Joint Lines, featuring trains of the Rio Grande, Santa Fe, and Burlington Northern railroads. Many locomotives per train were required to traverse the mountainous Palmer Divide. Then cross the Midwest prairies with high speed freights on the Union Pacific and Chicago & North Western transcontinental routes. Conrail freights cross the lift bridge over the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio. Finally, high speed passenger trains traverse the famous electrified Northeast Corridor between Philadelphia, PA and Washington DC.

Just for any fellow Europeans who may come across this video and are curious about the locomotives in red and yellow, with SF (Santa Fe) on them. The Southern Pacific and Santa Fe railroads attempted to merge with each other in the 1980s, and got so far along that they started repainting locomotives in what was to be the new companies livery, it was known as Kodachrome due to its resemblance to a popular brand of film by the same name. The merger would ultimately fail when the ICC (Interstate Commerce Commission) ruled against it. A terrible shame as the Southern Pacific would ultimately be assimilated by Union Pacific.

Hello Walt, I have been viewing these amazing Railfan videos of yours for a little while now but I was too nervous at first to comment on them. Although, you’ve captured many nice catches from the older eras. These videos that are in several parts (including this one) will be quite an adventure for me to get through. This is great so far and I might ask you about certain locomotives or anything that could relate to them if that’s ok.

@Walt Loevy You know how this part of the video at 1:30 has those Kodachrome units? That footage looks familiar to me as it appears to have been used by someone named “Peter Dibble” in a video he made about how the SPSF (Southern Pacific Santa Fe) merger failed.

Yes, Dibble got permission to use these shots.

@Walt Loevy That’s very cool actually! And you were the one who recorded that footage and every other footage posted?

Thanks for sharing. I found your video very interesting. At 14.14 I see those cars that I'm guessing are a type of MOW car on that train. Do you know more about them? I quick google search on my part came up empty.
