The fifth installment of this series on the Santa Fe Valley Division covers ‘70s and ‘80s action from Stockton to Fresno through the San Joaquin Valley. The Amtrak San Joaquins were in the early years of their operation in the mid 1970s, and you will see Phase I FP7s and SDP40Fs, along with Phase II F40PH units. Santa Fe from the 70s and into the 1980s was rebuilding and repainting locomotives into the Yellowbonnet freight scheme, and later into the Kodachrome scheme in an attempted merger with the Southern Pacific.
In addition to the Santa Fe and Amtrak action, Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson 2860 makes an appearance on the Valley Division heading south to Los Angeles in March of 1977.
In addition to the mainline action, switching activity is also viewed with CF7 power at Santa Fe’s Mormon Yard in Stockton.
These Super 8mm movies in both standard and sound formats come from the cameras of 4 different railfans, and come from the collections of Rob Klyver, Paul McClenahan, and the Western Railway Museum.
Enjoy this trip down the valley on the Santa Fe in the 70s and 80s!
