"In a setting of light and beauty stands before the blues of the sky and the sea, Santa Luzia. With 430 hectares, this is the smallest parish of the county of Tavira (Algarve, Portugal), and has 1,455 inhabitants, located about 2 kilometers from Tavira, this village carries in its essence the customs and knowledge of the people of the sea. According to the records, Santa Luzia was born in 1577, at the initiative of the fishermen, when they erected a hermitage dedicated to a saint of the same name, a Sicilian martyr and protector of those who suffer from their eyes.
Santa Luzia thus became the patroness of the parish. The history of the village was always linked to the sea. Initially by fishing for fish and hook, and from 1842 until the mid-twentieth century, with the appearance of the Barrel's frame, through the tuna coppa. From 1927 onwards, fishermen began to fish for octopuses and catfish, and this has contributed to Santa Luzia being considered the "capital of the octopus".
Years later, more specifically, on December 29, 1984, this town, formerly integrated in the parish of Santiago, was elevated to the seat of parish, having become village in 1999. Today, still of a fishing nature, this parish lives , also, of the bet on tourism, with accommodation, restaurants and beaches of quality.
Designated as the "capital of octopus", Santa Luzia provides all its visitors with real moments of harmony and well-being. Enjoy the life of this village and the fishing gear that live in an atmosphere of harmony with the tourism and hospitality of Santaluzienses. "
Extract of the presentation of the Vila de Santa Luzia, which with due respect we extracted from the portal of the Municipality of Tavira and which we present here in a panoramic view through the objectives of the “Mais Algarve”.
