While making this video I asked my dad to write a short summary of his and my moms travels on their tandem. I ended up getting an email back with a story several pages long. Thanks dad! He did write a summarized version which is bellow. Unfortunately this is not actually the tandem that my parents rode all over the world, but is actually a replacement. Near the end of my parents travels, they sent the tandem, they called "Big Red" to Denmark, but the crate never made it. There are more details below but my dad spent a year contacting the shipping company and never got much info where the tandem ended up. Some time later their insurance covered the loss and replaced it with the Arriva seen in the video in the early 1990's. It never got used like its predecessor, and spent many year of its life hanging upside down in a breezeway at my parents house gathering dust, spider webs, and no memories.
During the COVID-19 lock down, my buddy Jeremy and I breathed some new life into her and is now frequently used! The end aerial shots were filmed about 3/4 of the way up Gibraltar, one of Santa Barbara's most infamous climbs. HUGE shout out to Jeremy for filming and all the help with this project!
My Dad's summarized travel story:
• We flew next to Fiji, pedaling along the amazing tropic beaches there. We went out to a small no-roads island of Yanuca in time for harvesting of Coral Worms. 195 miles
• In New Zealand, we rode some of both the North and South Islands; beauty of peaks and green forests and rivers. Randy Largent met us and we pedaled and camped together for a week or 2. 1141miles
• We went to Papua New Guinea next but our tandem just sat in its cardboard and duct tape shipping carton while a family of cockroaches moved in.
• We pedaled down Australia's east coast, nearly run over by a semi-trailer truck. We met many cane toads and had hot sweaty days of cranking it. To get from Sydney to Perth we took the 2600 mile 3 day India Pacific train ride. I don't know our miles here as they're in a journal, maybe in the garage! 1000+ miles?
• On to Bali and Java in Indonesia. Bali is tropic beautiful, pedaling past the greenest green of rice terraces. Java was beautiful but populated and had scary traffic. At Whitings' place in Bandung, I packed the tandem in a wooden crate that I constructed w $5K of stuff and wished it off to Denmark via Indonesia's fine fine Jumbo Shipping. It never made it to Denmark. I don't know where it made it to, actually. Farmer's Insurance, though, gets a plug: we filed a claim when we got home a year and a half later and they covered it. And I'm glad you're enjoying that tandem now!

I have restored about five of these and they are really wonderful machines. There was one tandem crank model that I always looked for, it had a square taper bottom bracket and a Q factor similar to double road cranks. I remember building some 27 inch wheels too!

Nice job! I've got a 1995 Trek T50. I've been modifying it with more modern parts since we bought it 10 years ago (for 160€ in a thrift shop). Many people don't get the chance to ride a tandem and it is an enjoyable and different ride than a single. It gave me the chance to share with my girlfriend my passion for cycling and gave her the change to ride to much further places than she would by herself. Thanks for making me think of this!

Great video!! I got a little emotional while watching your video, because of your parents' story. As it happens, our story is relatively similar. We got an old Arriva from an old couple because they were unfortunately no longer fit enough to drive it frequently. It is not as old as yours, but at least 10 years old and still in top shape. It has been very reliable so far on our tours through europe. I am sure even your tandem will accompany you reliably for many years, if not decades. Enjoy it!

We purchased our Santana Rio about 25 years ago and it’s still going strong. Loved the video and would like to see you work on the bottom brackets and hubs. Thanks for sharing the connection with your parents. Well done.

Beautiful, well done! 👍 The brakes were good for that time, but I don't miss them... especially on a Tandem...

Amazing story and fantastic video, thank you for sharing. Unfortunately tandems are not very common in Brazil, but maybe one day we will see many of them in the streets!

We just purchased the same tandem (even the same color) and I am in the process of rebuilding it. Santana says to replace the fork as the original investment cast fork needed to be replaced after 15 years (and it is now about 30 years old). Looks just like yours. It has the internal reinforcement sleeve in the steerer tube but the steerer tube is also slightly dented from punching in the frame number. Yes, it lasted 30 years and felt great during the test ride. However, considering that the headset was worn to a point that the bike's fork fell into a "groove" when facing straight and the fact that I know nothing about the early owners, I need to assume that the fork had a long and bumpy life. I will bite the bullet and replace the fork with the chrome replacement unicrown fork that Santana still offers. Not cheap (and not as elegant) but cheaper than falling on our faces one day (also not elegant) and I don't want to constantly worry. Supposedly the new fork improves the ride and braking quite a bit. We will see. Nice restoration! Hope our tandem will be just a good looking as yours come spring.

huh, that's so Interesting! I never knew that. Luckily this particular frame didn't get much use. My parents had put thousands of K's on the original bike "Big Red", but when they shipped it to their final destination it never showed up. My dad spent months trying to contact the shipping company but it was never found. Their travel insurance ended up paying out for them to buy this one at the end of their travels which didn't get nearly as much use. But I will keep an eye out!

@@CalebBramsen - It helps to know the history of the tandem. I would feel better if I knew more about mine. At least it was the best fork available in 1988 (or whenever the tandem was built).

Wow, beautiful job and video. I have been riding a 50 plus year old Schinn Tandem. It has been well cared for, but needs to be disassembled , thoroughly cleaned, etc. I would love to take this project myself. Do you have any suggestions on how I could get guidance on doing the renovation myself? Thank you.

Sweet man! You can learn a lot from RU-vid but nothing beats getting your hands dirty! Take your time, be organized and I am sure you can do it!

That was a fantastic chronology of the restoration. You've inspired me to try to restore a vintage Schwinn tandem. My only concern is being able to get replacement parts if they're beyond repair. What did you use to clean the spokes?
@CalebBramsen
@CalebBramsen 3 года назад
Thanks Tony! Appreciate the feedback. I always encourage bringing old bikes back to life. To clean the spokes I just used soap and water with a brush, and then simple green for the harder grime and dirt. Came out great!

The tires are ~ 70/30 road/gravel. So I think the answer is yes. I did already take it on some gravel with a buddy and it was pretty nuts. We are definitely ready to hit A-Line.
